I’m back for Part 2 of Decorating Mistakes you don’t want to make. To finish off the list of no-nos…
THE FIX: If you have a tabletop or bookshelf full of small frames, sweep off that surface and start over! Instead replace just one or two favorites and fill in with other accessories. For a cohesive look, stick to a similar color palatte. One way to remedy this to take all of your frames and spray paint them the same color….black, silver, matte gold, chalk paint?
THE FIX: You don’t have to spend a fortune on frames, in fact this is one area where I usually buy budget. I buy almost all of my frames for under $10 at places like Michaels and Hobby Lobby (love those 40% off coupons!). One trick to make a framed photo look more high-end is to always use a matte. Play around with the size of the mattes for a more artistic look.
THE FIX: Edit carefully. Choose 1-2 beloved photos for a grouping, and it will make a much stronger impact. You can rotate them out.
This single beautiful photo makes a stronger impact by itself in a gold frame.
Hey, trends happen for a reason!
A lot of them produce great, fun ideas, and it can be a way to fresh up a room! However, when the ENTIRE room is all in the latest trend…it will look a little tired by the next year. Go with your gut…decorate to YOUR style, not the latest Pinterest style. If you use a professional designer, a good one will help you figure out what YOU like. That is the best way to a room you will love forever. Still want to use the new trend? Sure! But try it in something small…a throw pillow, an accessory, or a paint color. For the “biggies” such as large furniture try to go neutral, and then let the accessories do the talking. Stay true to your style and don’t chase that latest design craze. Blink and it will be on to the next one. In this living room the drapes and funiture are neutral, but they had fun with the artwork, pillows, and rug. Next year if they are over the color orange, its an easy fix!
This home is using the chevron trend in an area rug. But when chevron says “bye bye” and then next new trend comes around, a simple rug switch takes it back to neutral!
Find yourself guilty of the above offenses? Clients often tell me they know what they like, they just don’t know how to pull it all together. I would love to help you pull together the room of your dreams! Part of the Postbox Designs process includes a custom Design Questionnaire to figure out what you like and what your budget is. Then I get to help YOU make the magic happen!
