I’m so excited to share with you this project I recently completed for a client! She has fantastic taste, and requested a modern design, but still comfortable for their family of four. After she completed her Design Questionnaire, she also sent over about a dozen inspirational photos that were filled with neutral color schemes. She told me she liked a mix of metals and a mix of different wood tones. In the end, I actually created two different versions for her space. She can choose either version, OR I designed it so she could mix and match her favorites, to create a custom look.
Here is the first version I created for her. It features a modern extendable dining room table, an oversized brass dome fixture, and these gorgeous “wishbone” chairs she specifically requested. One big problem was her dining room lacked an overhead light, and thus was too dark for their needs. I suggested adding a chandelier, which will give them a big impact for a fairly simple electrical project. The room is fairly tight, so I specified using a couple of these skinny console tables put together (See #8). They can use them for extra serving space or for drinks, without taking up a lot of floor space. An oversized piece of art adds a pop of color to the space. Because they do have two children, I found this simple, graphic rug that is an indoor/outdoor, so it is easy to clean up spills (your children never spill…right?!)
In version 2, I started with a chunky modern dining table (that also extends), with a bold, graphic navy rug. To help lighten the space, I suggested using these white chairs (easy clean-up) and these airy chrome and white side tables. My client found these “head” chairs (I love it when my clients show me their ideas!), so we incorporated those as well. This gold chandelier from West Elm (See #4) is modern, yet classic, and adds in the mix of metals she requested. My favorite item though is #2, it is a custom oversized print from an Esty store. They can turn any important year (birthday, anniversary) into the roman numeral version. It is modern art, on the sentimental side!
What I encourage my clients to do though, is to make it their own! She mentioned that she and her husband love to choose artwork together (I love that! Don’t you wish your hubby wanted to choose art for your home with you?!). So they can swap out the art I selected for anything they want, but now they have a recommendation of the size and location of where to put their piece. I think of a Postbox as a paint-by-numbers. I give you the outline and the directions, but I encourage you to make it your own.
I turned one of her Mood Boards into the finalized version. I chose Version 1 to turn into a three dimensional perspective, now she could truly visualize her space. Here it is! Her Bonus Project that I included is shown in this perspective as well. It was a mini project to transform their traditional white columns into a more modern look with squared-off reclaimed wood posts.
I had more fun working on this project! I hope she enjoys it half as much as I did creating it for her.
