It is officially Day 12 of the 30 Day Design Challenge and I am calling out all ugly mirrors!
So, if you didn’t know this about me, I’ve been in the remodeling world for quite awhile now. My hubby and I own our second generation remodeling company that we bought from his parents almost eight years ago now. (If you are in the West Michigan area and need some remodeling work, check out the amazing projects over at Thompson Remodeling!) Ever since I graduated from design school, I worked as an interior designer there. Over the last 11 years I have had the honor of helping hundreds of clients by designing their baths, kitchens, mudrooms, lower levels, etc. Then a few years ago, I left work there to be home with the babes full time, and finally had the time to work from home and create Postbox Designs!
So I have a special place in my heart for baths and kitchens.
One of the things I realized was, no matter how fancy the room, or however big the budget, 99% of the time, there was SOME budget. As a designer, I was always looking for the best ways to spend my clients money-what was worth investing in, but also where we could save some of their money. For a lot of bathrooms I have designed, especially if it was a tighter budget, I realized we could keep their existing mirror, and just fancy it up to make it look brand new.
A lot of my clients had the classic “builder grade” mirror, i.e the large frameless mirror over the vanity, that was usually secured by little clips to the wall. While practical, these are not usually a thing of beauty! But with a couple of quick DIY steps, you can make-over your existing mirror to copy a higher end framed one.
I’ve included a link to this tutorial from Create and Babble where she shows you how to do this in Five Easy Steps! This one is using trim and painting it, but have fun with it! You can paint it a bright fun color for a kid’s bathroom, or use a rustic lumber for a barnwood look. Here is a version with white trim:
I love this rustic idea, using reclaimed wood, palatte wood, or just rough timber:
Here they stained their wood a light gray for a cottage look:
Makes a big difference doesn’t it? This mini construction project can work in any room of your house, but I bet a lot of you have these large, boring mirrors in your very own bathroom (I do too by the way, in our master bathroom, that is itching for a make-over!).
Did you know that Postbox Designs offers a Finishes Only Package?
