I feel like we have touched on just about every room of your house (which is the very point of the Design Challenge!). But I was thinking about it, and we are missing a very important yet overlooked “room”.
The Hallway. Yes, it may only be a means to an end, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be beautiful too!
Growing up, I felt like most hallways were the photo gallery of the bad annual school pictures. Remember those? At my BFF’s house (as she still is my bestie to this day), each child had a special frame that housed all 12 of their school pictures….in all of the 80s’ and 90s glory! If you don’t care to remember your teased out bangs, or crimped hair, but I don’t think anyone wants to remember that anymore. Let’s take the same idea of putting out family memories but add a modern twist:
PHOTO #1
I love the first inspirational photo with the simple black and white photo hung over a piece of furniture at the end of the hall. In design school we were taught to put something at the end of the hallway, so you actually had something to focus on while traveling down it. Another idea is an oversized piece of artwork or mirror. Try framing your child’s artwork, or a behind-the-scences shot from your wedding…

The second inspirational photo (and the first) showcases the modern take on the photo gallery. You can do a casual scattered look (Photo #1) or a modern gridwork of photos (Photo #2). I love the monochromatic look of all black and white. If you come to my house, you’ll know this is my go-to. My hubby says our house will soon be a shrine to our kiddos. No way, I call it personal design!
PHOTO #3
The third is my favorite though, the homeowners took the old swimsuits of their children and put them in shadowboxes along the hallway in their cottage. They also decked out their hallway in a bold wallpaper pattern. This is NOT an overlooked room in their home! You could frame the outfit your baby came home in, a baptism gown, anything!
And here’s a bonus: I always wanted to do this in my hallway, create a shadowbox for every big vacation you go on, and fill up the whole wall!
So have fun with it and make your hallway a destination on it’s own right!
