Last week I showed you Part I of this coastal cottage makeover I recently completed for a client. If you missed it, check it out HERE! To summarize, this family just bought a cottage in Northern Michigan, right on a lake. Before the summer season started, she wisely wanted a plan to furnish their home. So together we created a Postbox for six different rooms of her cottage! Now she has a “Master Plan” where rooms coordinate and flow into each other. And best yet, she can order it all at once, and be done before the season really heats up, leaving more time for boat rides and laying in the sun.
Last week I showed you their Family Room and Bonus Room, all done in a coastal beachy theme, but still staying with a neutral palette with pops of color. She also requested items that were durable and easy to clean as they have multiple children and two big dogs. So today I’m going to show you a peek of the Postbox I made for their dining room and two bedrooms!
Here is the coastal dining room Postbox I created for just $189 in accessories:
Like many of my clients, they did have a few pieces of furniture they already owned and wanted me to work around. They currently owned a dark wood dining table and beautiful chrome chandelier. I spent only $189 to come up with some finishes touches to take the room from plain to a place you want to hang out in with a cold drink. I started off by giving them instructions for a simple centerpiece using a Target rattan tray (#2) that can also double up as a serving tray. Then place some hand blown vases (#1) and faux stems inside for a simple, nature inspired look. Another layer to add to the table is this beachy striped table runner (#4)-which I also want to take home myself! This soft gray: Benjamin Moore’s “Gray Owl” (#5) is used throughout the entire main floor to let each room flow into the next.
But my favorite part are these super simple posters that will take up their entire blank wall for a great focal point. I found an Etsy site that will allow you to customize any wording in any font for just a few dollars. I chose the words “Lake” and “Life” but they can choose any two words they want. Then I recommended framing them in inexpensive poster frames, about 24″ wide by 36″ high. This should cost them less than a hundred dollars total, but for two totally custom pieces!
Another room that was a priority was their master bedroom.
I created two looks for them, both having a neutral, peaceful feel to them:
Instead of using bright turquoises and lime greens like some beach styles, she requested a coastal feel but with a more neutral look. This is Version #1 that I created for them. An upholstered headboard from Target (#1) paired up with this simple navy and white stripe duvet from Pottery Barn (#2) and crisp white sheets (#5) would make me (almost) never want to leave my bed. The nautical pillow (#3) and rope mirror (#7) add touches of beachiness. They currently owned a white dresser so they needed a white nightstand to coordinate with it, this one (#9) has a great price tag and has some much needed extra storage. In this room I suggested using the classic “Decorator White” wall paint by Benjamin Moore to keep the room light and airy.
But I also wanted to show them another way they could re-create their master bedroom with a few small changes. Here is Version #2:
This Version #2 shows a neutral upholstered headboard with a nailhead detail (#1), and this duvet mimics the classic seersucker look (#6), which always reminds me of warm weather and sunshine. I switched out the accent pillow to this swiss cross (#3), and swapped in a new nightstand (#9). As a simple artwork idea, I found this dock photo (#4) but I also suggested framing a few black and white photos of their family enjoying their cottage for a personal touch.
And finally, they wanted some ideas for their daughter’s bedroom. Does it get any better than decorating for an eight year old girl? So fun!
Like Mom and Dad’s room, I created two different versions for her. They plan on renting out their cottage a couple of times a year, so I came up with a “grown-up” version and a “kid-friendly” version, depending on how they want a room to look for potential guests:
Version #1 is the more “grown-up” version that could grow with a little girl, but also work for renters. It doesn’t get much more beachy than this seagrass headboard (#1) and I paired it with this crisp navy and white geometric duvet from Pottery Barn (#4). Budget friendly items like this Target spindle table (#2) and sweet sheets (#3), round out the room. The artwork is FREE, using a free printable from Inspired by Charm. For both rooms I had a little fun with the color, using this soft aqua: Benjamin Moore’s “Jamaican Aqua”.
Version #2 is a girly girl version that has the bright colors an eight year old would love. This four piece bedding set from Target (#7) was less than $100, and pairs up well with this simple white cottage headboard (#9). I’m in loooove with this gold and white scalloped Target table (#6), and the gold bling continues with this FREE printable art from Soho Sonnet.
I always try to design different versions for one space that can be mixed and matched.
In any of these rooms they can swap out items from each version to create an entire new look!
