I have a new love obsession, and it’s named after a furry animal and a classic country pattern. It is the Buffalo Plaid.
And I think it is the going to be the Hottest Fabric Trend of 2017.
There you go…I’m calling it now! It has all of the elements of a classic fabric:
The classic color combo is gray/white or black/white or navy/white…all go perfectly with a neutral decor
It goes with any style. It can work in a traditional room, a farmhouse style, or even if a modern decor
The pattern is so simple, you can pair it with almost any other fabric
It can work on so many different elements, as you can see below:
I love how this foyer is paired up with buffalo plaid and stripes…this is a rustic foyer, but this gives it a modern edge to it.
This buffalo plaid upholstered bench is simply TO.DIE.FOR. The clean, sleek lines of this bench shows how this plaid can go modern as well. If you want a modern edge, choose a piece like this with open legs, straight lines, and crisp edges. Pairing it up with a pop of green is brilliant. This was designed for a boy’s bedroom, but this could work in any room of the house.
I love the fact that you can get Buffalo Plaid in a RUG. It is a masculine touch that can add drama to any type of room-even my own kid’s homework center! Swapping out the rug gives this space a whole new look.
This buffalo plaid as a coverlet makes it the star of the room. This room has all of the elements of a Fixer Upper style farmhouse bedroom: the spindle bed, the shiplap, and the rustic art. This black and white buffalo plaid keeps with the neutral theme.
I want to adopt this gorgeous farmhouse style banquette and take it home with me! They paired a shiplap nook with a rustic farmhouse style trestle table. Then to give the uber neutral room a pop of color…enter the buffalo plaid pillow! (I would use covers you can take off and wash if you are using them in an eating situation).
And buffalo plaid can TRULY be used in any room of your house. This adorable little x-bench is case in point! I love the industrial style hooks above it to create a little vignette for towels and bathrobes. It is like a spa in your own home, with a farmhouse style flair.
House of Hargrove
The reason this laundry room works so perfectly is because they blended farmhouse style with a modern edge. Everything is light, airy, and streamlined. The pops of black (windows, doors, and the black-and-white buffalo plaid pillows) create a modern element to an otherwise farmhouse rustic look.
I think I could sleep in this mudroom and be perfectly content.
So, how do you incorporate the Buffalo Plaid into YOUR home decor? A pillow is the perfect spot to blend in a trend (inexpensive and easy to swap out!). You could do another pop of this pattern in a table runner, throw at the bottom of your bed, a rug, or I’ve even seen it in wallpaper. How dreamy is that?
Here is a Farmhouse Style Living Room Mood Board I recently created for a family of five! I paired up the rest of this neutral Fixer Upper style look with a tan and white buffalo print pillow (#3)…plus another trend, the rustic arrow (#4).

Would you mind sharing the source for the top photo used in the “info” photo…the one with the farmhouse nook and black sign above. I tried to find it but no luck. Thank you.

Hi Megan, Isn’t that nook so dreamy? 🙂 I’m not 100% sure but I really think it is the same nook as I have featured a bit down belong in the blog (the link below connects to Cottonwood and Co)-it is just showing the other side of it. Truthfully I had saved this image a long time ago because I loved it so much so I don’t have the original source, but when I found the other tagged nook shot, I thought maybe I had found the same space!

Hello, Kristin! I am with a country goods home decor company (I won’t say who to avoid spamming your site) and I just wanted to say that I love this post! I wanted to give you a courtesy notice that I shared a direct link on our Facebook page to this page, because we sell buffalo check products and I wanted to give our followers some ideas on other ways people are using buffalo checks.
I’m more than happy to email you a link to the post or take down mention of your blog if you prefer, just let me know.
Thank you for writing such a great post! 🙂
