I know what you are thinking. It is still Winter. I’m not even THINKING about outdoor living! Well, that’s why NOW is the perfect time to get some ideas rolling around in your head, and then when the warm weather hits you will be ready with a makeover PLAN.
That is what Postbox Designs is all about. I give you a MASTER PLAN…then it’s up to you. You can buy everything all at once, or you can buy items one-by-one as you budget allows. But you’re not wasting time, energy, or money by buying random stuff here and there, then not knowing how to pull it all together.
So whether you have a sunroom, three-season room, a patio, or porch, here are some ideas of how to make your OUTDOOR spaces just as beautiful as your indoor ones.
With this client, she requested that her three season room match the rest of her home: which is formal and traditional. Just because a room is partly “outdoors” doesn’t mean you need the basic patio set. All of the furniture and fixtures I chose are rated for outdoor use, but are beautiful enough to belong indoors
Here is the Mood Board for Sunroom Version #1:
This furniture is patio set that is rated for outdoors, but has the French Country traditional look she was after. She can use the white cushions it comes with, or order different colors. This indoor/outdoor rug is certainly formal but will withstand water, mold, or the spilled glass of wine! And again, you don’t have to stick with outdoor furniture only. This metal and glass table can withstand the elements of a three season room (NOTE: I would not suggest using this table on an exposed porch or patio, her room is enclosed so it works).
These Target outdoor pillows add bright pops of color. And why not hang art in a sunroom or three season room? These botanical prints are neutral and dress up the space.
Finally, as a bonus project, I suggested they can replace their existing fan with this gorgeous Pottery Barn indoor/outdoor chandelier to further dress up the space. That is a quick way to change up a room from outdoors to a more traditional “looks like it belongs indoors” style.
But I always do TWO versions for all of my clients. So what would a different look be?
Here is Sunroom Version #2:
In this version, the patio furniture is still formal with a turned wrought iron leg and a neutral fabric that is rated for outdoor use. This brightly colored rug can not only be used in a semi-outdoor space like this, but the pattern will help hide stains (they have two young children). In both versions for extra seating in a small space, I chose soft “pouf” seating. It is easy to move around and is perfect for kids.
Whenever I think of formal, I think…monogram. I can’t help it, I’m obsessed. To finish off the look, these scalloped trays, wrought iron chandelier, and outdoor style lamp fit the French Country Style. These side tables are petite so they work well in a small space.
She has her Mood Boards. Now what?
I also created a 3D perspective for her so she can visualize exactly how her new space will look! This is Version #1:
If you have a sunroom or three season room, or even if you are looking to update your deck, you can continue your indoor style into the outdoors! Choose items that are more furniture-like, and even add elements like chandeliers, trays, lamps, and artwork. Make sure to choose items that are outdoor rated if they will be exposed to the elements.

Here is a recent three season room I created for a young couple with a totally different design look. They were looking for more of a Fixer Upper Farmhouse style:
This room was totally enclosed with glass so not everything had to be outdoor rated, but I still chose rustic and easy to clean pieces. And I still chose outdoor rugs since this would be a transition space from their backyard. Since this was a young couple, budget was high on the mind, so items are found from places like Target and Ikea! See the entire story and more photos HERE
And here is Version #2 of the same space:
Like this look? Not only did I do their sunroom, but I also designed their adjacent Living Room and created a similar style so the rooms could flow right into each other. Check it out HERE!
