Last time I shared a Real Postbox Project I designed for a Rustic Farmhouse Style Family Room. But when I create a Postbox for a client, I always create TWO different versions for them. Not only does it double their options, but they are also designed to be mixed and matched, to give them even more choices. I already shared Version #1 with you, but here is Version #2 for you!
But while I share this Version, I also wanted to share some tips along the way so YOU can create the perfect family room as well:
STEP #1: Anchor the room with a neutral sofa. This isn’t the time for trendy patterns-get a piece that will last. As you well know, I loooove me some slipcovers if you have kids or pets. I have them myself-I’m a fan of Pottery Barn and Ikea for their farmhouse style pieces.
STEP #2: Get your trend on with throw pillows. The hottest fabric trend right now? The Buffalo Check (#3)-in any color it adds rustic charm but also is a simple, modern print. Best yet, buy a few inserts and swap out the covers with the season.
STEP #3: Go graphic with the rug. Patterns help hide stains, and help set the style theme. A rug is the perfect item to tie all of the elements together. Is all of your furniture neutral? Add some color with your rug. Need help tying together different styles and colors? Find a rug that incorporates all of the colors to make the room more cohesive.
A Persian fits into a traditional style, geometric prints lend themselves to a modern look, seagrass is the perfect cottage staple, and stripes can fit all of the above!
STEP #4: You can’t go wrong with a leather chair. This Pottery Barn version (#10) is also a recliner, and it is going to last you decades. Leather only gets better with age, fits almost any style, and is super duper easy to clean.
STEP #5: Need a coffee table decor idea? For just $10 you can make your own. These matte white vases are from West Elm (#8). But achieve the same look by spray painting an assortment of bottles and jars with a matte white spray paint. For an average coffee table, a grouping of 5-8 vases in different sizes is perfect. Old wine bottles, pickle jars, Mason jars, or Dollar Store vases will all work! Keep as is, or fill with foliage for free! For just $10 pick up a can of Krylon Matte Finish Enamel Spray Paint (plus have some leftover for a different project!) Here is a great tutorial from the Ruffled Blog that shows you how to create faux Milk Glass bottles like this!
STEP #6: So many Family Rooms have the two story ceilings which are GORGEOUS, but it is hard to decorate for. I am suggesting a Gallery Wall with oversized frames (24×36) so that the scale of the frames fit the scale of the room. Little 8×10 frames will get lost on a wall like this. In a case like this, bigger is almost always better! Don’t let your artwork look lonely on those big walls!
And finally, they needed help with a Dining Room chandelier (but same tips apply if you need a Family Room chandelier). A mix of metal and/or wood are key to this rustic farmhouse look. They have 9′ ceilings, so we chose some more oversized fixtures…
