Learn How to Create the Perfect Playroom!
No one wants a house that has their kid’s messes overflowing into every room. And no one REALLY wants a Dora playhouse competing for room for grown-up furniture. Whether you have a dedicated Playroom or just a corner of your family room, stay tuned in how you can create an adorable Playroom space that actually functions as well!
I’m super excited to share this project with you today for a couple of reasons. It is a fun, whimsical space for the kiddos, but us Moms get the sigh of relief with having all of that oh-so-cute organization that goes along with it. No kids? No problem! You can still steal ideas and components from this space for a Family Room or Craft Room!
The second reason I’m so excited is because this was my first Postbox I got to send to the Lone Star State! That is the beauty of E-Design, I can sit in my snowy town in Michigan while designing this Playroom across the country in Texas. Super exciting. And fitting for Texas, this Mom requested a neutral, rustic space with some pops of color for her two kids. Additionally, she has a boy AND a girl, so it needed to work for both kiddos.
I always design TWO versions for all of my clients, so you get to see Version 2 (which looks completely different!) in Part II coming up!
Here is Version #1:
One specific request was to have a teepee or canopy area with a fuzzy rug for snuggling up-I love that idea! So I found this dreamy neutral canopy (#8) and she can put in this faux fur rug (#10) and these monogrammed pillows (#5)-order one for each child.
There is also a media area as part of this Playroom. The homeowners already had a brown leather sofa they owned and wanted to work into the space (not shown), so I found some inexpensive throw pillows (#11) and (#3) to dress up their existing furniture.
She also requested a craft table, great idea! I’m not a huge fan of “kiddie furniture” since kids outgrow it so quickly. I tend to specify either full sized furniture or adjustable furniture. But to help make up for this, I chose these bright yellow metal chairs (#9) that are very lightweight so kids can easily move them. And if they topple over, they won’t get hurt by a heavy chair. Plus, these metal chairs are going to withstand toddler abuse VERY well! ๐
Toy storage is VITAL in a playroom: the #1 thing that can save a room from the “always messy” state. I recommend smaller bins or baskets as opposed to large bins like toy boxes (everything gets lost inside!). Playroom baskets should be durable and easy for kids to access so they can put things away on their own. This Pottery Barn unit (#12) is a great investment-it will grow with her kids and comes in a multitude of different layouts and colors.
I included this Elevation, along with step-by-step directions to help my clients decorate above their toy storage area. Some fun prints, whimsical items (like this felted garland), along with some family photos finish out the space. BUT it is high enough so kids won’t mess with it:
The homeowners wanted to incorporate a lot of different areas into this room, so the Floor Plan really helped lay out the Playroom function. Into this one room we crammed in:
Media Area/Sofa hang out space
Toy Play and Storage
Reading Nook
Craft Table
This is a glimpse of what her Postbox looked like. Her entire room was designed and packaged up and mailed right to her! All she has to do is click and buy on her items, then follow her drawings and instructions to re-create her Playroom.
But I like to give my clients LOTS of options, so I always create two totally different versions that are designed to mix and match. So stay tuned for Part II where I created a totally different look for this Playroom design. The best part about Version #2 of this Playroom?
ALL of the artwork is totally F-R-E-E!

Do you have any links that go along with any of your images?
PostboxDesigns says
Hi Erin, I don’t usually add in the links as they are projects I created for my clients! But if there is a certain item you love and are trying to track down, let me know and I’ll get you the link to it! ๐

Where is the rug in Version #1 from? (Labeled as 1 as well) Thanks!
PostboxDesigns says
Ahh, I love that one! It is from Rugs USA and here is the link to it: https://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/rugs/rugs-usa-moroccan-sm18/multi/200MJSM18A-76096.html?custom_ref=qzZxcP&pp=0 (it comes in a couple of different colors as well!)

I love your designs!
Would you be able to share where the white storage pieces are from? The one with the open spaces & doors and also the one with the openings on top and what looks to be drawers beneath it. Thank you! Exactly what I’m looking for!
PostboxDesigns says
Thanks so much! Of course-it is actually part of the Pottery Barn Kids “Cameron System”-there are dozens of combinations you can use to create either this configuration or something different. And it comes in several different finishes as well-hope that helps! ๐

Hello! We have the same rug (with the patterned colorful diamonds/triangle) and the metal letters!
I love those bins that you used for the white cubicals. Can you share where they are from?!
Thanks
PostboxDesigns says
You have such great taste ๐ I love that rug as well! And absolutely-both the baskets and white toy storage are both from Pottery Barn Kids. The baskets are the Quinn White Washed Baskets. Hope that helps!

Love the playroom version one with the triangle colorful rug. I need a workspace table/ homework table that can fit three teens that will go with that rug (gender neutral)
Do you have any ideas ๐
Hailey says
Also where is the grey table from?! Even that may work ๐
PostboxDesigns says
Hi Hailey! I love that gray table too…it actually comes in quite a few colors as well. You can find it at Wayfair right here: https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/grain-wood-furniture-valerie-dining-table-grnw1016.html?piid=15844720 Another idea for your three teens is something I did as a triple homework station for MY three kids, I used an Ikea countertop that is 98″ long to give them plenty of space! You can find all of the details on this idea here: https://postboxdesigns.com/2016/05/11/the-big-reveal-my-kids-homework-area-for-one-room-challenge/

This is beautiful! Can you tell me where the beanbag chair #4 in the first board is from?
PostboxDesigns says
Hi Ashley, Thanks so much! The bad news is that exact beanbag chair isn’t available anymore BUT it was from Target. Here is a link to some really cute beanbags, a very look similar: https://www.target.com/s?searchTerm=gray+bean+bag+chair I hope that helps! Cheers, Kristin
Kelsey says
Would you happen to remember where the canopy is from in version 1?
PostboxDesigns says
Kelsey, Hi! Yes, it was actually from Etsy! So while that exact one may not be available, there are a lot of really cute ones if you search on there. Hope that helps! ๐
Kelsey says
Thank you so much.
Kelsey says
Sorry one other question. Do you happen to know where the be brave print is from? I assumed Etsy so I searched for quite some time and found similar ones but not that one. Thank you!
Kelsey says
Sorry, hopefully, this didn’t post twice but I was hoping you could tell me (if you remember) where the be brave print came from. I have searched Etsy all over and found very similar ones but not quite like the one shown here. Thank you for your help. Your rooms are beautiful!
PostboxDesigns says
Hi Kelsey,
Thanks so much for reaching out! I just checked on the Shopping List for this Playroom Makeover, and the bad news-is that print is no longer available. I’m so sorry! I know a lot of Etsy shops will do custom work…so you could show it to them and see if they can create some similar for you! Best of luck, Kristin
