Hi Friends,
If you have been following me through this whole One Room Challenge process…it is Week #5! Which means next week is the BIG REVEAL!! And if this is your first time hanging out with me…I’m so glad you are here! I’m Kristin, I live a fun, chaotic life staying home with my three kids while running my E-Design biz, Postbox Designs, but if we women aren’t the ultimate multi-taskers than I don’t know what!
Speaking of multi-tasking, I’ve been so busy with other people’s room makeover, that my OWN Family Room has been seriously lacking some love, for the oh…the last four years we have lived here! Like maybe some of you, it has been full of a mix of hand-me downs that work, but it wasn’t really a reflection of us.
If you missed any of the last four weeks, you can find all of the deets HERE. Like the reveal of my Kid’s Craft Table last week (check it out HERE)
But I wanted to do something I have never done before: I created a full library full of FREEBIES to go along with each Week of my One Room Challenge Makeover! Everything from Shopping Lists to Guides, it’s in there. If you have lusted over anything you have seen so far, the entire “Shop this Room” freebies are in there as well:
FIND ALL OF THE FREEBIES HERE!
So what’ going on for Week #5? It’s all about the walls.
Wall Project #1: Paint Color
I finally decided on my wall paint color! Because this room is two stories AND it wraps all the way up my open staircase, I did NOT want to paint this room again. (Did I mention I’m the world’s laziest painter??) So I wanted something soft and neutral. After looking at way too many “greige” paint samples, I finally decided on Benjamin Moore’s Balboa Mist. It is a light, creamy gray with just a touch of taupe in it. Here it is on the walls:
But the whole process made me think…so many of my clients need help with their paint color! In almost every single Postbox Project I have done, I have helped my clients with their wall paint colors. So for this week’s One Room Challenge Freebie, I created a:
Free Guide of My Favorite Paint Colors
You can find four of these colors in my very own house, and I have used all of these for client projects. If you are digging the Farmhouse Style (like my Room Makeover), this is a great palette to get you started! A copy of it is hanging out in my Free Resource Library or just Pin & Save for when you need it!
Wall Project #2: Board & Batten Wall
You’ve seen some sneak peeks of it, but my favorite, favorite, FAAAAVORITE part of my room makeover is my new board and batten wall!
I’m going to call it now:
Board & Batten is the new shiplap.
I love shiplap as much as the next person, in fact in my very first One Room Challenge, I added a shiplap wall for my kid’s homework center (created from a hallway). BTW, if you want to see how I pulled this Homework Room together as my first ORC project, you can find it HERE…sometimes I think we can all relate to these simple makeovers that are d0-able!
But…like all trends, I think shiplap isn’t going to last forever (sorry JoJo), so I wanted to mix it up in my new Room Makeover. Here’s the thing with trends: use them in small doses!! If you shiplap your entire home, you might be regretting it in five years. When you do just one accent wall, it is a fairly simple change-out if you want a new look.
So I added battens (over my existing drywall) to just ONE wall:
I had my (awesome) father-in-law out to my place to install my new wall. If you want an entire tutorial, here is a great one from Remodelaholic! But for my wall, we basically just installed 1″ battens every 16″ so that they would fall on the studs. And that was about it (just make sure you have equal spacing on the ends when you are done)! I did a bit of caulking and filling it nail holes where needed. Then I slapped on two coats of paint (to match my existing trim color).
For less than $100 in material, this board and batten wall is an easy way to add some Farmhouse charm to your room. Pick a wall and you can be done in a day!
Wall Project #3: Gallery Wall
Because my Family Room is two stories tall it has a LOT of wall space. In fact, I have had several clients with the same problem-we all love these soaring ceilings, but how do you fill up the walls?? I beg you…please don’t throw up a dinky frame and be done.
Tall ceilings = Big scale artwork
So either hang some oversized artwork (I’m thinking 3′-4′ tall here people!) or install a Gallery Wall. And because I’m a proud mom of three I have waaaay too many photos of my kids (my hubby calls it our shrine to our children) 🙂 so I decided to go with the Gallery Wall. Plus, swap out your photos every now and then for a whole new look!
Next week is IT WEEK. THE BIG WEEK. AS IS….THE BIG REVEAL! So be sure to tune back to see how all of these pretty little bits get pulled into a complete room (fingers crossed!) But all week I’ll be posting sneak peeks on Facebook & Instagram!
And if you love the Farmhouse style, just jump onto my BRAND NEW Farmhouse Family Room Pinterest Board + it has all of the photos from the first five weeks of my One Room Challenge Makeover. Be sure to follow along with all of the other designers and cheer them on at Calling It Home!
