It is here! The One Room Challenge Reveal Week! After six long weeks I finally have something to share with you…my Farmhouse Family Room Makeover is D-O-N-E! In case you are just joining me, the blog Calling It Home came up with the brilliant idea of challenging designers all over the nation to complete a room makeover in just six weeks.
This is my third time participating and I wanted to do something special this time around, so for each week I created a brand new FREEBIE to go along with that week of my makeover. I have free Guides, Shopping Lists, Tips and more with everything from how to Style the Perfect Sofa to the Ultimate Painting Checklist to my Top Wall Color Guide to 10 Top Starter Pieces for Your Home. Instead of having to track them all down, I put them all in my FREE RESOURCE LIBRARY so you get 24/7 access to it all:
I’ll email you the password to get full access to my Free Resource Library whenever you want!
So while I was hunting for the perfect throw pillow, I created a Killer Combos Pillow Guide so YOU won’t have to get as stressed as I was. Like downing a whole box of Junior Mints stressed. You’re welcome. 🙂
And without further ado, my new Farmhouse Family Room Reveal! (Bear with me for the ten bazillion photos that are about to follow):
One Room Challenge: Farmhouse Family Room Makeover
I have three kids and a dog, so while things had to be cute and comfy, I didn’t want to cry if someone spilled strawberry smoothie when I wasn’t looking. So I chose the Ikea Ektorp sectional (I also grabbed a white slipcover for it too!). Slipcovers can be washed AND this Ikea sofa totally fits the Farmhouse Family Room vibe.
To save money, I took a very comfy armchair and ottoman I already own. The existing fabric was stained and ripped, so I had it re-upholstered for a fraction of the cost of buying a brand new custom piece.
This Fixer Upper style coffee table is going to hide a multitude of nicks and dings that my three kids can throw at it! And I created this super simple vignette, and when I need to move it, I just need to pick up the entire tray and move it.
Probably the biggest project of the entire room was my Media Console. In the end I ended up creating this Target Hack by taking an inexpensive Target dresser and with just $8 of material (paint and Frog Painter’s Tape), I was in business! If you like it, I created an entire Tutorial (with pictures!) all right HERE + 2 New Painting Guides to go with it (and check out my big painting oopsie that almost derailed the entire project!)
I know this is the silliest thing but finding throw pillows that worked was like super uber stressful for me. I am so embarrassed at how LONG it took me to track these down. I spent waaaay too many hours watching Gilmore Girls and pillow surfacing in my PJs. But in the end, I was super excited to find these Modern Farmhouse ticking stripe and polka dot pillows. I found mine at HomeGoods, but in my “Shop This Room” FREEBIE I found some similar ones for y’all!
Now don’t get my wrong, I love my high ceilings of this room! But I have so many clients with the same problem-how to you decorate your wall with high ceilings? When you have such a large room you need large scale wall decor. So I kept it simple with an oversized Gallery Wall of black and white family photos. By keeping all of the frames black it keeps it from looking too cluttered (I think!)
This room had several giant sliders leading out to a back porch, so instead of spending a fortune on custom window treatments, I decided to get budget friendly. I paired up white cotton grommet curtains (about $10/drape at Target) with this bamboo shades. We’re pretty casual around here so we rarely close them, but now we can if we want.
Farmhouse Style Kid Craft Area
My kids have finally outgrown having all of their toys in our Family Room (woohoo!) so instead I created a Kid’s Craft Table in the corner of our room. I added this distressed wood table (snagged for a mere $99) and paired it up with these bomb proof white metal chairs. I wanted to add some kid decor to the area but still have it flow with the main room.
To add some charm to the space, I added this Modern Farmhouse style graphic rug and a very Fixer Upper inspired beaded chandelier. Because it is kid decor after all, I created this DIY yarn tassel garland ($3 friends, find the whole tutorial HERE!)
This moon artwork was an instant download for a few bucks that I printed off as an engineering print, so I think my kid artwork cost a grand total of $6! (More money for craft supplies) 🙂
And best of all…my favorite mini model! This is my youngest and she had a blast hanging out at her brand new craft table. She even ran upstairs to change into her “party dress” before her photo shoot started. I think some pretty cool crafts are going to be made here, along with her big bro and sis!
Do you love something you see? Want to buy one for yourself? If you love the Modern Farmhouse Decor Style then I got you covered. I created a special FREEBIE Cheat Sheet: “Shop This Room”
…where I have all of the items in this room, along where to get them…all in one easy spot.
Thank-you for all of you who followed along and a HUGE thanks to the One Room Challenge…check out her beautiful blog and see ALL of the gorgeous transformations. Grab a coffee, get cozy, and scroll away!

Such a sweet space – I love that the kids area flows so perfectly with the family area. And the layers of texture keep the neutral palette cosy and inviting – it’s lovely!
