Or you can find out more about the whole Pre-Styled Mood Board Package works right HERE! Currently, you can now get your Pre-Styled Mood Boards for your Family Room in 3 Different Styles: Farmhouse, Modern, and Boho. And speaking of Boho, it is a look I’m seeing A LOT of lately, and a lot of my clients have been requesting this style. So I wanted to share a Real Postbox Project I recently completed. Part of the thrill of Interior E-Design is a get to work with clients all over the nation. Recently I designed an entire apartment in San Francisco top-to-bottom in this style. And because it is San Fran, it was a small footprint to work within!
Luckily, if you like this Boho style, it tends to be streamlined without a lot of clutter. So it works especially well if you have a small space.
And we all know you can get beautiful style when you have an unlimited budget…just hop on Pinterest or Houzz. But I am a firm believer that you can get great interior design style on any budget. And the budget was tight on this one:
The Budget was $5000 To Decorate the Entire Apartment (Living Room, Dining Room, Bar, and Master Bedroom). Whoa. That’s a lot of furnishings for that budget.
So see how I broke out the $5000 budget into all of the rooms and furnished the entire space in this modern Boho style. Let’s jump in and see the good stuff now!
Isn’t that navy velvet sofa just the dreamiest? Seriously, I want to take it home and marry it! This pop of color gives the room it’s focal point, and then it is surrounded by some neutral elements. Natural elements (think warm toned woods) are a must have in the Boho Style, so it is carried in with this gorgeous wood twisted side tables, media console, lamp, and furniture legs. Gold accents are also a great place to show off the Boho style-find accents of it in this coffee table, floor lamp, and tables lamps (which are ALL from Target BTW!). This african mudcloth pillow, graphic diamond pillow, and the (removable) wallpaper add in some global elements. Give removable wallpaper a try if you are a renter…or you change your mind a lot! It can get a little pricey but I have found Wayfair as a great source at a great price-this clocked in at under $3/SF.
One my favorite sources for inexpensive rugs (that actually are a good quality) is Rugs USA-this amazing faux hide rug comes from that very source, and you are going to spend a fraction of what you would elsewhere. I’m a fan!
A easy way to make your room feel complete is by creating a coffee table vignette. I created a simple vignette with this acrylic tray, some coffee table books, and this faux cactus in a pot. A finally, artwork always makes the space feel more like home. I recently discovered artist Kevin Russ-you can find his stuff on Society 6, a lot of his work is shot with his IPhone. Amazing.
I like to go a little more serene in a Master Bedroom, but I wanted to carry in the same Boho style theme. A great way to make rooms flow easily is to choose about three colors to repeat in all rooms. In this case, I chose blue, gray, and gold to repeat in all of the rooms. Add in pops of other colors to keep it from looking boring, but this repeat of color helps create a cohesive space for you!
I’m in love with this beautiful industrial canopy style bed (which clocks in at just $399!). Pair up with crisp white bedding (I get mine from Target), and layer on this striped throw blanket and navy mudcloth pillow. Those two items will make your neutral bed pop (plus they are totally easy to swap out for a new look). You are going to save oodles of dollars by not piling up super expensive bedding elements. Add in a natural element with these live edge wood Target end tables, and accessories such as this hammered gold bowl and faux succulent: both cost less than $10 each!
To create a custom look, I designed the room to have a mirror and industrial sconce over each side table-plus it frees up your nightstand surface area if you are in a small space….every inch counts!
Bonus: These sconces are plug-ins…no electrical work required! It’s kind of my new obsession lately.
If you are on a budget, I’m a big fan of Etsy Instant Downloads…you can purchase this beautiful La Lune print for a few dollars, then have it printed (on your home printer, or I like to use a 1 hour photo place like Staples). Blow up and hang as a single item over your bed. For any of you who aren’t artsy fartsy, hanging a single oversized print will be your new BFF. Scale is super important here, you don’t want your single artwork print to look lonely. So I recommend going big or going home-go at LEAST 24×36 (I love 36×48 even better though!)
Finally, want an idea for the EASIEST wall treatment?
For a modern look that creates a focal point, but is the easiest, breeziest thing ever….Divide your wall in half on a 45 degree angle (create two triangles by drawing a line from opposite corners). Put a piece of painters tape on it. Then paint half of it this deep navy (try Ben Moore’s “Hale Navy”) and leave the other one the original wall color. THAT’S IT. It creates a graphic punch for just a few dollars, and next to no DIY skills! (Check out a sample photo of it on the Bedroom Mood Board above)
When you have a tight space, it helps to have “light” looking pieces…so what the heck does that mean? Look for pieces with thin legs, and a little more delicate looking. Avoid heavy, bulky pieces. If you look at the Boho Dining Room Mood Board above all the pieces seem light and airy, which will make your space bigger. The gold desk chair is simply made of wire to make it almost disappear (add a soft sheepskin cushion if you want some extra squishy comfort)
Sometimes when my clients have small spaces they feel limited and restricted. So a great way to feel like you added a “splurge” is adding a home bar! You can find a great bar cart (on wheels as a bonus so you can move it out of the way when you aren’t using it). This gold bar cart is only $99 and it fit perfectly into a little niche in the Dining Room area. I added a fun tassel wall tapestry nearby. And if you know me at all, you know I always have to add some whimsy to a space. I’m totally smitten for these felt board with movable letters. Kind of like the grown up version of the felt boards from Sunday school, right?! Spell out a fun message, or put the recipe for the house drink on it…whatever you want. If you add just one little thing to make the space feel special, it makes all of the difference.
I always include a floor plan with notes on it for all of my clients. Why? Because so many people are stumped with how to actually arrange their furniture for the best layout! Especially if you have a small space, furniture placement is key. Plus, think of it as a map for where to put all of the gorgeous items from that Mood Board.
There you go! A budget friendly Boho Style San Fran apartment (that I would totally ditch my suburban digs to live the big city life for awhile) 🙂
Like what you see? Feel free to hang out with me (and ask all of your burning design questions) over on FACEBOOK or INSTAGRAM!
