Create 3 New Design Looks with Just 7 Pieces of Furniture
Hi Friends, welcome to Postbox Designs! While I spend most of my time doing Interior E-Design for clients all over the country, every now and then I take a break to do something different. For awhile now I’ve been a monthly contributor over at Remodelaholic. If you haven’t stopped by over there, prepare to be amazed by all of their home design ideas! Each month I create a custom Mood Board and blog post for their readers. But this month I did something special: I created not one, not two, but THREE design Mood Boards for them.
Feeling Overwhelmed and Not Sure Where to Start?
The number one problem most of my clients have is this:
They know what they like but they don’t know where to start. They feel overwhelmed.
I absolutely get that. In fact, even though I’ve been an interior designer for 13+ years I can feel overwhelmed when it comes to my own home sometimes. I spent three hours searching Etsy for the “perfect pillow” the other day, and about wanted to pull out my hair when I was done…and still didn’t find one. And this is what I do for a living!
For my clients, my job is to not only create a room they love, but one that will last them a long time. And to do that, you need to start with classic, neutral pieces. Then I layer in more fun or trendy accent pieces into their space. In five years if they decide they want to try another style or trend, they don’t have to start from scratch: they can simply swap out a few items for a whole new look.
7 Classic Foundation Pieces Is All You Need
I chose 7 Items that are classic and neutral enough to work with just about any design style. These pieces also work with most budgets and rank high in durability and function. You can find the sources of all of these pieces in my original Remodelaholic blog post: Product Sources Shopping List
Leather Sofa
Wood + Metal Coffee Table
Straight-lined Upholstered Chair
Sleek Side Table
Black Chandelier
White Paint
Metal Table Lamp
I chose these specific items to fit with three different Living Room Design Styles: Modern Farmhouse, Boho Chic, and Warm Modern. But feel free to keep the overall theme and swap in a different item for your room. In all three Mood Boards I kept these 7 pieces. All I swapped out were the pillows and the rug to create three totally different design looks.
7 Classic Pieces: Create a Modern Farmhouse Living Room
For each new design style, I kept the 7 Classic Pieces and all I swapped out were the pillows and the rug. For a Modern Farmhouse Living Room you want to keep a neutral look. I added in ticking stripe, grain sack, and buffalo plaid pillows: all fabrics are classic staples of the Farmhouse design style. For the rug I layered in a neutral jute rug. I actually own this exact rug in my own house: it is an affordable, durable beauty. I L-O-V-E this rug!

7 Classic Pieces: Create a Boho Living Room
Again, I kept the same 7 neutral, classic pieces for this Boho Living Room design. However, I switched it from Farmhouse Design Style to the Boho Design Style with four new items. If you love the Boho style look, search for pillows with mudcloth, kilim, aztec, or ikat patterns. A bold and colorful Boho Persian rug is the perfect swap for this design style. And if you have kids are pets you will be thrilled: this colorful patterned rug is going to hide a multitude of stains and dirt!

7 Classic Pieces: Create a Modern Living Room
And for the third Mood Board you guessed it: I kept the same 7 neutral, classic pieces. Simply swapping out the throw pillows and rug give a new Modern Design Style. While these classic pieces can go rustic in the Farmhouse and Boho design styles, they are sleek and straight-lined enough to work with a modern design style as well.
I called this style “Warm Modern” as true modern design can go extreme. The leather and wood coffee table add some warmth to the space, but every furniture piece works well into this style. For pillows, look for simple graphic patterns and mix them with solids, such as this navy velvet lumbar pillow. You can go solid colored for a modern rug, but I like using some graphic pattern in my modern rugs.
