One Room Challenge: Boy Bedroom Makeover Reveal
It’s here! It’s here! It is the final week of the six-week One Room Challenge …which means I finally get to share all of the pretty “After” photos with you! If this is your first week here…I’m right there with you. I’ve been known to watch the last 10 minutes of my favorite HGTV shows just to see the final reveal.
I’m Kristin, a mama to three and I like pretty spaces, chai tea, and my collection of skinny jeans. I started Postbox Designs so my clients could order their entire custom designed room in an hour, without leaving home. Because I know you are busy too! But I took some extra time to makeover a room at my own house this time around.

Woodland Adventure Boy Bedroom Makeover
We moved into our house when my son was only four, so we decorated it for a little guy. Well, he just turned eight and is long longer into Mr. Potato Head like his original room decor! For this round of One Room Challenge, I wanted to make-over my little guy’s room with more of an Adventure theme. My little man would live in our wooded backyard if he could, and is always running around outdoors. So for his bedroom makeover, I wanted to bring the outdoors in for him. This is what I started with:
The Final Reveal of his Woodland Themed Bedroom Makeover
And here is the new look! I wanted to start with a clean slate by painting over his bright blue walls with a crisp white paint. We also swapped out the old white carpet with new vinyl woodgrain floors. I was also lucky enough to be able to re-use his existing rustic wood headboard and dresser. With a new foundation, I wanted to layer in rustic, woodland decor and accessories. If you want to see where all of the items came from, you can check out my Mood Board + Shopping List to get all of the sources!
Kid’s Bedding Ideas
The first thing I started with is brand new bedding. I loved this black and white buffalo check bedding from Target (cute + affordable is the perfect combination for a kid’s bedroom). Then I layered on with these neutral pillows and this cute “Wanderer” Land of Nod pillow. And since we live in Michigan my little guy needs some extra warmth, so I layered on this Army surplus blanket at the end of his bed.
Kid’s Bedroom Reading Nook
Whenever I design a kid’s bedroom or playroom, I always like to include a reading nook, bench, or chair. I’ve been obsessed with the beautiful new Target Project 62 line-where this sleek black leather chair came from. While it is a bit more modern than the rest of the room, I really liked it’s simple lines AND easy-to-clean faux leather surface. I also hit the jackpot with the clearance Land of Nod camp-inspired throw pillow.
Mixing Finishes in a Bedroom Design
Because his bedroom was an Adventure Woodland theme, I wanted to use a mix of rustic materials. We had his existing medium toned furniture pieces, so we went a couple of shades lighter with the new vinyl woodgrain flooring. I also repeated the black metal in his dresser, accessories, and new plug-in sconce light fixtures. Mixing in rustic metals like galvanized metals also worked into his rustic bedroom theme.
Same with mixing in fabrics: this black and white buffalo plaid bedding coordinates with the black leather Target chair in the corner. As some of you may know, I have been OBSESSED with the swiss cross pattern for a few years now. While I was originally going to go with the Land of Nod cross rug (seen in my Mood Board), last minute I came across this version from Urban Outfitters on clearance. The good news is I snagged it for just $57. The bad news, I literally got the very last one online!
Bonus: An extra One Room Challenge Kid’s Space
And from this view you can see a sneak peek into my very first One Room Challenge space: my kid’s triple homework station! I created it as part of the hallway outside of my kid’s bedrooms. I was shocked when it went viral, being pinned over 100,000+ times! I think it was the type of space people could relate to-it is simple and functional. You can check out that whole project right here at my Kid’s Triple Homework Station Reveal.
Bedroom Dresser Styling
I was able to re-use his existing rustic dresser, but knew I wanted to dress it up a bit. I went out one evening with one of my favorite designer friends and we hit up Home Goods HARD. I scored this vintage style suitcase, globe, and other styling knick-knacks. With kids you can never have too much storage space. This navy metal bin and suitcase can help hide itty bitty toys in a safe spot. This tall galvanized and rope bin from Target also helps hide his larger toys.
Adventure Bedroom Decor Themed Details
As a designer it is sometimes just as hard to not OVER decorate, than it is to find the perfect pieces. I wanted his room to be fun, but not feel cluttered or overwhelming. So sometimes this Mama had to pull it back and remember that “less is more”. For the only decor over his bed was this sweet-as-can-be felt banner from Aspen + Oak. This handmade banner added just the right amount of charm while sticking with the Adventure Woodland theme.
Budget-Friendly Kid Decor Details
As I mentioned in an earlier blog post, I don’t like to go too matchy-matchy with my furniture. We were blessed to inherit a whole four piece bedroom set from my in-laws. However, I didn’t want to use them all in his bedroom as I thought it would be too boring and predictable. So while I re-used his headboard and dresser, I added in this green metal Target nightstand. I loved the durable material and the pop of color. And these two drawers create easy storage. (Don’t worry, the other pieces are being used in other rooms of the house!).
The metal bin, faux antler, gray metal storage box, and magnetic calendar are all budget-friendly Home Goods finds. To keep with the Adventure them, I found this sweet felt “Explore” pendant from Strawberry Moth. And like the bison print, this bear photo is also another Etsy Instant Download gem. My whole family fell in love with this dapper dude and nicknamed him “Mr. Bear”. He is from the Etsy shop Vivid Atelier.
Kid’s Artwork + Plug-in Sconces
One of my favorite ways to score inexpensive art is finding Instant Download prints like this one from Tess Pace. I download it and then printed it off for just a few dollars locally. But one of my very favorite finds were these rustic accordian sconces. I snagged a pair of them to flank his new oversized bison artwork. To save time and money, I didn’t want to bring in an electrician and do drywall repair. Instead, I had these converted into plug-in sconces. All we had to do was hang them on the wall and plug them in!
My Favorite Detail of my One Room Challenge Bedroom Makeover
I have had people ask me what is my FAVORITE part of this makeover. These rustic metal plug-in sconces are my absolute favorite part of his room. I seriously want to use these in ALL of my client projects now! They were affordable, unique, and totally make the space. You can find these lights AND all of the other items on my Adventure Bedroom Makeover here on my Sources Shopping List + Free Mood Board.
Wow. A six week makeover is a big deal in our house! Usually I’m working on rooms for my clients, but I am so grateful to have the excuse to work on a room in my very own house. And it is all thanks to One Room Challenge and our fabulous hostess with the mostess, Linda at Calling It Home. Hundreds of designers participated so check out all of the amazing transformations.
And a big thank-you to my photographer Jacob at Harr Creative for his amazing photos!
