Modern Farmhouse Family Room Makeover
I’m back this week with another recent Real Postbox Makeover to share with you guys! I have to tell you-I have the very best job in the whole world. Not only do I get to design rooms all over the country, but I get to work with the very best people. This client was no exception, and as a fun bonus, she also lives in my home state of Michigan!
She already had a beautiful home, but had some challenges with an open floor plan and two-story ceiling. So, she needed some extra help pulling together her Family Room design. And I was thrilled when she contacted me to help her do that very thing. Today I’m sharing Version #1 with you, so stay tuned for Version #2 coming up in a few days!
Modern Meets Farmhouse-What Design Style To Go With?
When my client filled out my Design Questionnaire, she knew she liked several different styles: she was a bit modern, a bit Farmhouse, and a bit traditional…all rolled into one. However, this really isn’t a problem! Liking different design styles doesn’t mean you can’t incorporate them all together. In fact, the very best room designs are the ones where you mix several different styles together. So if you aren’t sure your style…or you like a bit of everything, read on!
Traditional Family Room Decor
We started off this Family Room with a foundation of neutral, traditional pieces that will last this family forever. Two of these gray Pottery Barn sofas (#2) grounded the large space, with this beautiful tufted navy ottoman (#9) in the middle. A lot of the Pinterest images my clients liked had pops of leather in them, so I added these Pottery Barn leather chairs (#11) to the space. If you have kiddos (like she does), leather is a fantastic, durable material for kids and pets alike.
And whenever you have a room with extra high ceilings, you need a generous-sized light fixture to match the scale. So we swapped out her boring ceiling fan with this gorgeous oversized ring chandelier (#1). I seriously want this one in my own Family Room!
Farmhouse Family Room Decor
But my client also loves the Farmhouse design style. So how do you mix Farmhouse decor into a Traditional Family Room? Adding in rustic, neutral elements and materials like this woven basket (#4), lamp (#12), and throw blanket (#15) add in an extra design layer.
Modern Family Room Decor
But can you mix Traditional AND Farmhouse AND Modern design all into the same Family Room? Yup, you sure can! Simple graphic patterns like these modern pillow patterns (#3, 5, and 6), marble and gold tables (#7) and modern storage ottomans (#13) all still work into the more traditional elements. And the best Family Room designs are usually a mix of high and low. While the main pieces are good quality investments, adding in budget-friendly decor touches like #10 and #14 are from Target’s new Project 62 line!
Family Room Built-ins and Fireplace Makeover
Like in many Family Rooms, my client had some awkward spots in her room, such as where to put her TV. I always have my clients create a Pinterest board for their Postbox Projects, and she included some images of built-ins she liked. I helped her design some simple built-ins (not shown) based off these imagesĀ (#16, #17), and a fireplace makeover (#18) to go along with her Family Room design.
And finally sprinkling in some decor items that pull in the Traditional, Modern, AND Farmhouse styles give some personality to this Family Room design.
But this is only Part I of this Family Room Makeover! I always create two different design versions for all of my clients. Come back next week to see Part II of this same Family Room Makeover and see a whole new space!
