Create an Adventure Themed Playroom Design
Hi Friends! I am so excited to share today’s Postbox Designs Makeover with you! Recently I worked with this grandma from California to create a beautiful Playroom for her grandkids. Don’t you want her to be YOUR grandma?! I loved how she had a dedicated Playroom just for when her grandbabies came over. And like many of my clients, she already have a few main pieces that she was going to keep in her Playroom. She just needed the finishing details to pull the room together.

Playroom Design for Boys and Girls
I can’t imagine a room more fun to design than a Playroom. I mean, it’s like being a kid again! I get to search for whimsical, charming details to make a Playroom magic for the lucky little ones who get to use it. And a lot of these kid or Playroom spaces are shared by multiple kids of varying ages and gender. So how do you come up with a Playroom design that works well for both boys and girls?
For this grandma, we went with an Adventure/Camping theme for her grandbabies. A lot of the Pinterest photos she loved had a lot of Land of Nod items in it-and many had an Adventure theme to them. Using bright colors like reds, blues, and greens are gender neutral. Furthermore, you can used this Adventure or Outdoor theme for boys or girls! A toddler is going to love this room as much as a grade-schooler would.
Adventure Camping Themed Playroom
One of the main elements my client needed help with was to fill up an entire wall of decor items. I helped her create a Gallery Wall with adorable prints such as these Land of Nod camping themed artwork (#3) and these charming Etsy prints (#7,8, and 10). To keep the wall interesting, we also added in this sweet “Go Outside” banner (#5) and “Be Brave” pennant (#16). But my favorite part? This cuddly little wolf head from Target’s Pillowfort line (#17). When you are creating a Gallery Wall, incorporating different shapes and materials help keep it fun and interesting!
I love incorporating something educational into a kid’s space, and this National Parks map is a great way to do it. This map also comes with stickers that you can add when you visit parks all over the nation. Turn it into family fun and watch as their map gets filled up after your trips!
Other Camping Themed Playroom Details
What kid wouldn’t want a teepee in their Playroom or Bedroom space? This Land of Nod teepee (#12) makes the perfect reading nook when paired up with this Land of Nod faux campfire (#15) and Target faux fur rug (#14).
The most important part of any Playroom design is to have a place to keep toys stored and organized! These white cubbies (#1) can fit odd-sized toys, and you can mix it up with storage cubbies that fit bins for hidden storage.
And don’t forget to look up when you are designing! We updated her builder basic fan with this charming mint green version (#13) that keeps the room feeling fun and whimsical. Finally this plush Rugs USA navy and cream rug (#2) has a slightly boho look that fits with this Adventure theme but keeps the room from looking too “theme-y”.
Adventure Playroom Design Version #2
When I’m working with my Postbox Designs clients, I always create TWO different versions for them that are made to be mixed and matched! That way they have two different directions they can go, but can also swap their favorite items in. Plus, I have found that many people start the process feeling overwhelmed. They know what they liked, but need some help pulling it all together. After they get their Postbox, they can finally envision the space, so they feel comfortable switching in a new item or two that they love.
So what does Version #2 look like? We kept the same Adventure Camping theme, but swapped in a few new items. (She already owned the Bear print and “Stay and Play” print, so we kept both of those items in both versions).
In this version, I used an inexpensive shelf from Target that works with canvas bins for storage, also from Target (#6). This Gallery Wall shows off this oversized US Map from Land of Nod (#8), arrow shelf from Target (#12) and Etsy finds like this pennant (#14) and little wooden sign (#15). A sweet star garland mimics camping out under the stars.
She can also create a custom banner with these Land of Nod letter pennants (#7). She can spell out her grandkids names or a fun phrase such as “Let’s Go Camping”.
In this Playroom we also used this set of four woodland animal prints (#1o) and fun, oversized chalkboard (#11).
Adventure Themed Bedroom Makeover
One pitfall of being an interior designer is finding incredible home decor pieces every day for my clients. It’s like going into a candy shop and trying not to buy anything. So while I’m looking for items for my clients, sometimes I fall in love with them myself. And I’ll be 100% honest: this Playroom helped inspire my son’s recent Adventure Themed Bedroom Makeover!
I fell hard for the “Go Outside” banner (something we tell our kids on a daily basis), the “Adventure” pennant, the bear photo, and the Land of Nod swiss cross rug. I added in my own touches and created a subtle outdoor themed bedroom for him.
You can see the “Befores” and “Afters” and find sources to everything I used in my room:
