One Room Challenge: Traditional Coastal Bedroom Makeover
It is finally here! Week #6 of the One Room Challenge is all about the big reveal-it’s like watching the last 5 minutes of Fixer Upper to see the finished look. This year I tackled my entire Master Suite: a Traditional Coastal Bedroom Makeover AND a Boho Bathroom Mini-Makeover. So without further ado, here is what I have been up to for the last six weeks.

Week #1 Week #2 Week #3 Week #4 Week #5
Traditional Bedroom Makeover: The “Before”
Here is the room I started with: pretty much a blank space. We did some small projects such as painting the wall, swapping out the fan for a chandelier, and doing a DIY fireplace makeover. We did keep the existing carpet and the rest of the lighting in the space.
Traditional Bedroom Makeover: The “After”
And here is the “After” of our Bedroom Makeover! While I love designing in just about every style for my design clients, I am personally drawn to the Coastal look. I’m from a land-locked state so when I moved to Michigan I became smitten with everything to do with our nearby Lake Michigan. Throughout our whole home are nods to the lake life with lots of grays, whites, and blues. Some of my rooms have a more modern take on the Coastal style, but for our Master Bedroom Makeover, I went with a full Traditional Coastal look.
I wanted our bedroom to be the place where I could relax after a normal, crazy day.
So for me, that was a lot of pale, soothing colors, crisp white sheets, and pops of my beloved Navy!
Traditional Bedroom Makeover: The Bed
Have I mentioned I have the best father-in-law EVER? Not only did he create my new fireplace, but he also helped me build our bed.
Seriously, he built me a bed. How cool is that?
We actually paired up to do this project about three years ago as a birthday present for me! We started with an MDF core that was shaped with a soft curve. Then we added tons of batting, wrapped it in this pale linen upholstery, and finished the edges with a nickel nailhead trim. And it is my favorite thing in this whole room.
Then I layered our bed with inexpensive white sheets and a white duvet (all from Amazon). I seriously can’t live without our down duvet-I feel like I’m sleeping in a giant marshmallow every night. Then I layered on these navy & white accents pillows, and a modern printed quilt at the end of the bed.
Finally, I added this tufted linen bench at the end of the bed. While I was thinking of aesthetics when adding it, my children quickly found it was an easy way to catapult themselves onto our bed. Glad I could help little ones.
Coastal Traditional Bedroom Makeover Details
More than anything, I wanted our Master Bedroom to feel calming and soothing. We live a crazy, fun life with three little kids, a beast of a dog, and both my hubby and I owning our own businesses. So after putting down the kids to bed-this is my little haven. I knew I wanted every color to be soft and subdued so most of the bedroom is white, pale gray, or a pale linen color. I added a few pops of black, but the only other main color is navy.
Traditional Bedroom Design Details
While our whole home has a VERY casual, family-friendly vibe, since this is Mama’s space, I wanted something a bit more traditional and refined.
Adding details like the nailhead on the linen bed, and the tufted bench are more traditional elements.
I swapped out the boring white fan for a traditional, polished nickel chandelier.
I layered on an ornate, traditional area rug with soft gray and white hues.
Several furniture pieces like the bench and nightstands have traditional, turned legs.
Fluted round mirrors over the nightstands
We kept our existing two dressers that are very traditional in a dark walnut with gold hardware.
Casual Coastal Bedroom Design Details
But I’m a coastal girl at heart, which also means have a casual, laid-back vibe to it. So I wanted a mix of traditional elements with some specifically coastal style ones:
Simple navy & white accent pillows
Striped navy & white table lamps (my favorite HomeGoods find of the year!)
Casual white cotton curtains paired up with woven window shades
Simple white sheets and duvet-they are inexpensive so I won’t cry when the kids spill grape juice on them during movie nights!
Woven rattan baskets to hold extra bedding
I also used two inexpensive (less than $10 each) Etsy prints as artwork: one ocean print over the fireplace & another water print on our dresser
Traditional Coastal Bedroom Makeover: The Furniture
Everything about this makeover is super budget friendly. Like I mentioned before, my wonderful father-in-law helped me make this bed, so it was only the cost of material. I found these well-priced spindle nightstands at BirchLane, and our tufted bench was another online bargain.
We were very lucky that we already had some beautiful, high-quality dressers. In fact, I’m so thankful to my wonderful mother-in-law for her foresight and amazing shopping skills:
Our dressers have been my husband’s since he was 16 years old.
Yep, they are 20 years old, in fantastic shape, and I happen to love them. How is that for a return on investment?! They are uber traditional (which means they never have gone out of style), with large moldings, a deep walnut stain, and beautiful traditional gold hardware. I didn’t have to do a thing for them.
Inexpensive Bedroom Artwork Decor
So while all our furniture choices were budget friendly, if you are not careful, the decor details can wreck your budget. Here are the inexpensive artwork and budget friendly wall decor items I used in the space:
Target Fluted Mirrors: I found these for $20 each on the Target clearance end rack! So while you can’t get them anymore, places like HomeGoods and Target are the perfect places to snag a mirror for under $50
Digital Downloads Etsy Artwork: The oversized 24″x36″ water print over our fireplace and the circle print over our dresser are both Etsy finds for under $10 each. I printed them off at a local Walgreens and framed them myself for inexpensive, super easy DIY art
A few framed black and white photos of our own kids at the beach add to the coastal vibe and bring in some personal touches
We also have a framed print of our house coordinates in a modern typeset. You can use Microsoft Word to make this, print it out on your home printer for….FREE!
DIY Board & Batten Fireplace Makeover
I shared all of the details on our fireplace makeover in Week #4, so you can see it all : including the before, during, after shots, by clicking on the Week #4 link at the top of this post.
While I loved having a fireplace in our Master Bedroom, I thought it was a huge, bulky eyesore. It was plain, boring, and seemed too industrial looking in our space. However, to save both time and money, we wanted to only re-face it, not remove it. Instead, we added vertical board and batten trim over most of the fireplace, to give it a more crisp, clean look. We left enough brick around the firebox to meet our fire code, but everything else got this coastal makeover. Then I painted all of the trim Benjamin Moore’s “Simply White”
We also dressed up the fireplace by adding a more traditional mantle to it. We used pre-made corbels from Home Depot, and stock crown molding along with basic MDF material to create this new mantle.
Trim and white paint can solve the world’s problems, can’t they?
I also was able to take advantage of my new mantle to add some coastal decor to it. I added this black and white ocean print, this fantastic wire horse sculpture (another HomeGoods gem), and some faux mercury glass bottles. These bottles are actually from the Dollar Store and I simply spray painted them with mercury glass spray paint to achieve this look.
Finally, I added two rattan woven baskets in front of the fireplace to help hide my (not so favorite) tile, AND it gives us a spot to store extra blankets and bedding. (Don’t worry, we move the baskets when we have a fire)
Coastal Traditional Bedroom Makeover: The Bedding
There are a couple of ways you can go with bedding:
ONE. Invest in high-quality, expensive bedding that will last you forever
TWO: Use inexpensive bedding knowing that you will be replacing it
Since we have three young children and a giant beast of a Labradoodle who are all often in our bed (whether it be movie night or 3 AM post-nightmare visits), our bedding gets a lot of abuse. I can’t tell you how many times our Labradoodle Jasper has jumped up for a snuggle to leave a trail of dirty paw prints. So personally, I purchase two inexpensive sets of white sheets on Amazon and two sets of inexpensive white duvet covers also on Amazon. I spent only about $20 on each item. Since they are white, I can bleach them, and not cry when they get dirty…again. I would simply rather enjoy my kid’s snuggles than stress about my bedding. Someday I’ll be one of those people who get to invest in the high-quality stuff!
However: we do have a very nice down, duvet because I can’t live without it. Having a high quality duvet makes all of the difference in comfort, then covering it with an inexpensive cover works for us.
It is like sleeping on a cloud when I climb into my bed every night. Seriously, sometimes you can find me working on client design projects from my laptop in bed!
Bedroom Nightstand Decor
I loved these over-sized nightstands and fell hard for the spindle legs (another weakness of mine…I actually already own the coffee table version of these tables!). Adding in some more pops of navy, these HomeGoods navy & white stripe lamps, and faux succulent plant (also from HomeGoods) wrapped up this simple nightstand decor. My nightstand has a more girly look to it, with flowers, and some pops of gold.

$950 Budget Boho Bathroom Makeover
But I didn’t just tackle one, but TWO spaces this year for One Room Challenge. I updated our entire Master Suite. Last week for Week #5 of One Room Challenge, I showed the reveal of our budget friendly bathroom makeover. You can see the entire reveal with all of the photos and info right here:
$950 Budget Boho Bathroom Makeover
Here was the bathroom I started with: boring and white. To save money I kept 95% of the bathroom: cabinets, counter, floors, shower, bathtub, and lighting. Instead, I focused on paint and decor updates to bring it up to 2018.
I kept our existing cabinets and painted them Benjamin Moore’s “Hale Navy”, which made the existing white countertops pop. Then I updated the cabinet hardware with inexpensive polished nickel knobs and pulls, at just $4 each.
The only change that required a tool was swapping out the existing faucets. We took out the dated crystal (yup) faucets and replaced them with these Delta faucets. I chose ones that have the same drill pattern as the existing faucets so it wouldn’t impact the countertop at all.
We kept the existing tile flooring, but added to color to it with this runner. This colorful boho rug runner was only $44 and added so much to the space! Then for another boho touch, I added these woven rattan baskets to help store extra towels.
Since our countertop is long enough to have a dance party on it, I wanted to break it up a bit! It is great to have so much storage and surface space, but it seems so, well, long. This expensive tray can help corral bathroom items. While I just used one, you could also use a tray per person.
One of the biggest changes was one of the simplest. The existing bathroom had dated frameless mirrors-that were cut to two different sizes. I am a symmetrical girl through-and-through so it drove me crazy. I swapped it out with these modern, metal framed mirrors. I had to deal with a lot of angled ceilings in our bathroom, so this helped add some much needed symmetry to the space.
Budget Bathroom Makeover Mood Board
And here is where I started! The entire bathroom makeover cost just $950:

Wow, kudos for tackling 2 spaces for this challenge. Both rooms turned out great! Love love the navy on the bathroom cabinets, it looks so good! The bedroom is also lovely, with the tufted headboard and beautiful nightstands. Funny thing is I have the same rug in my bedroom 🙂
