Happy Day 23 of the Postbox Designs 30 Day Room Challenge! I can’t believe it is the final week! I hope you have been having as much fun as I have, sharing different design ideas for around your home. Day 23 tackles a big one that a LOT of my clients have trouble with ….and I totally don’t blame them! How do you create a “vignette”? This could be for a tabletop, a mantle, a coffee table, etc. If you look around the designer magazines, they are filled to the brim with little groupings of items, that look, well…so GOOD together? But how do you create one without making it look cluttered? Or just buying a bunch of stuff to fill up some open bookcases?
So, here is a step-by-step way to create a vignette for any room in your home:
Here are some key tips (I’m going to use a table you might find in a living room or entry for this example, but you can use most of these for different surfaces in your home):
-Hang something on the wall (mirror, picture) only a few inches above the table, so it still seems like part of the grouping
-Place items in various heights
-Stick to a color palette of 4-5 colors
-Within the table, group items together (groups of 3 work, and choose items of different heights OR do groupings of similar items such as vases)
-Have something you love but not the right height? Put a stack of books under it!
-Add something personal and fun…a monogram, a family heirloom, a childhood photo
-Make it practical, this vignette has some storage in it: use some baskets or bins to store extra blankets, toys, books, etc.
-You could show off a collection: a stack of vintage letters, a cake stand collection, etc. and showcase a few of your favorites in a group
-Add a lamp for lighting (again, make it practical)
-Lean some items up against the wall
You can apply these techniques to filling up open shelving:
Or a mantle, the same technique still applies:
Postbox Designs can help you design ANY room in your house, I do everyone online to save you time and money. That way everything is done on your time schedule. I create all of your drawings on professional design software, and then bundle them up (along with samples, a custom Shopping List, and instructions on how to pull it all together) and mail them to you in a custom Postbox. Everything you need to purchase for your room is all in one box! But just because I do the work online doesn’t mean I don’t get to know YOU first! We chat, I have a Design Questionnaire for you, and you share all of your inspirational photos with me, so I know what YOU love!
