One Room Challenge Bathroom Reveal:
Marble & Nickel Bathroom Makeover
It is here! Week #6 of the One Room Challenge which means I can finally reveal my finished bathroom makeover! It has been a long process and this bathroom has come a long way! But finally a bathroom that I’m not embarrassed to share with my company. Bathroom remodels can be expensive, but if you select your materials carefully and stick with a few tricks, you can makeover your room for a fraction of the cost. I spent less than $3,000 and about six weeks…and I even hired out the major stuff (plumbing, electrical, drywall). If you have a bathroom that needs a facelift, read-on my friend!
Bathroom Makeover: The “Before”
In case you forgot, I will remind you were I started from. This Southwestern floor-to-ceiling glazed clay tile wasn’t really my style. Over three years of living with this bathroom and I jumped at the chance to demo it and start over. We took out all of the tile, counter top, mirror, light fixtures, flooring, and bath accessories. I also removed a LOT of wallpaper! All of this caused quite a bit of drywall damage, so we did have to hire a drywall contractor to come and do some serious patching. We removed the plumbing fixtures, but kept it all in the same locations-this is a pretty standard bath layout so there was no reason to switch it up.
Traditional Bathroom Makeover Reveal: “The After”
So in just a few short weeks and for less than three thousand dollars I transformed the space into something a little more my style!
Bathroom Quartz Countertop Upgrade
To save money, I kept the existing vanity and gave it a makeover using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, to see the whole tutorial check out Week #4 HERE! To complete the makeover, I topped it with “Cirrus” quartz counter top-it looks like marble but with a whole lot less maintenance.
Traditional Bathroom Remodel: Marble Hex Tile Flooring
But my favorite part of the whole makeover is my gorgeous marble hex flooring! I have been drooling over these tiles for years and when I found it for less than $10/SF I was sold. The old clay tile is gone and a much more sophisticated look is here to stay. Plus, check out how I further updated my vanity-with two $6 bun feet from a big box store made this vanity look more like a piece of furniture.
After the Chalk Paint makeover treatment, the finishing touch for this vanity was an update with polished nickel hardware. These pulls are less than $4 each and I love them!
DIY Vanity Update: Chalk Paint Makeover
Another close-up of the vanity. Less than $100 of chalk paint and hardware updated an old, beat-up vanity and turned it into a focal point of the bathroom. Plus we saved thousands by not having to buy brand new cabinetry. If your cabinets are solid and the boxes are in good shape (like mine were), give a mini makeover a shot! I distressed the finish to give it a more cottage look:
My new Delta Victorian faucet is as practical as it is lovely! If you are looking for easy-to-clean items-polished chrome is always the least expensive AND the easiest to clean finish-it’s true! And my three kids have already put my quartz counter top to the test-and it has handled all they have thrown at it! This simple gold vase I made with 5 minutes and $5, check out the easiest tutorial in the world HERE!
Money Saving Tips for a Bathroom Remodel
When remodeling a bathroom, you will save oodles if you can keep all of your plumbing fixtures in the same locations. I liked the existing layout, so I kept everything in the same spot, and just replaced it with new fixtures. I already told you about my vanity makeover…I further updated the space by removing my (hideous) existing light fixture and swapping it out into two different sconces that flank the mirror. I found these pretty little polished nickel sconces on Amazon, and I love how they juxtapose with the rustic scallop mirror. I had actually found this mirror for a client and loved it so much I snagged it for myself!
I chose the mirror for the scallop shape, but I also love the little rope detail and it’s distressed finish. Mixing up metals in a bathroom gives it a more custom look than trying to be matchy-matchy. I mixed bronze, polished nickel and polished chrome together in this space.
Bathroom Makeover: Inexpensive Artwork
I always put art into every bathroom I design…and the perfect spot for a bit of artwork is over the toilet area. This “Good Vibes Only” is a gentle little reminder to my kiddos when they get a bad case of the Mondays (okay, it’s a reminder for Mom too!). I found it on Etsy for $2 and printed it off myself at home. Plus I did replace my old, leaking toilet for this newer, sleek Delta model.
Sometimes it is the little details you love the most. I fell in love with this tasseled Turkish bath towel. My kiddos love it too! After looking at dozens of shades of gray, I finally chose this subtle, soft color: Benjamin Moore’s “Balboa Mist”.
