Hi Y’all, I’m really excited to show you a Real Postbox Project I just created for a family of five. I had to laugh because they have a very similar living situation as my fam….three school aged kids, a new pup, and a house in the suburbs. They wanted a room that was beautiful, yet functional and durable (i.e. easy to clean-always on the top of my list!). And like many of my clients, they had a couple of pieces they wanted to keep and incorporate into the new space.
Also, like SO many of us, their room is currently decorated in a style they don’t love. When the purchased the home, they inherited a lot of pieces, and over the years she bought accessories to go the current decor, not really the style they love. Here is their existing Family Room (and their sweet little pup!):
As we walked through the first steps of the process, she wasn’t quite sure of her style or her budget. So we started off by having her make a Pinterest board. I had her pin Family Room images she liked, even if she wasn’t quite sure what she liked about them, or the exact style she wanted. Then…a pattern emerged! She liked Rustic Farmhouse, but wanted to keep it traditional and from looking too “country”. While she still wasn’t sure of her overall budget, she told me the stores she liked to shop in, and what her priorities for the space were.
This is the Mood Board Version #1 I came up with for her:
The main purpose of the room is to hang out together or watch TV. So I anchored the space with one of my favorites, a Pottery Barn sofa. Their quality is fantastic and if you have kids or pets, I’m a huge fan of their slipcovered pieces. (I have owned my own white PB sofa for over a decade now!), they are so easy to take off and wash. But if they wanted a more tailored look, the same sofa comes in an upholstered version. I even included fabric samples in her Postbox.
As a busy mom I knew she wouldn’t want too much frou-frou accessories.
So I came up with the EASIEST 3-Step Coffee Table Vignette:
Take a large tray (that can double up for food/drinks) and put it on your coffee table (#6)
Add 2-3 of these gorgeous (but affordable!) glass vases (#10)
Fill with faux Cotton Bolls (or another greenery) (#9)
She has her own 3-step vignette that stays together in her tray. So, she can pop it on the table when guests come over. But if she wants the table clear for the every day, all she has to do is just take off the tray and put it on a less used surface in the room. Then kids can put their feet up on the coffee table and pile on snacks, and she doesn’t have to worry about organizing little knick knacks every day.
I also included curtains/blinds to help soften her existing (and gorgeous) floor to ceiling windows. Plus a slim TV stand to better maximize her traffic flow, and rustic touches for her walls and fireplace.
Because the TV is going to be the main focal point of the room, we swapped around her furniture placement to allow for max seating for viewing. We also streamlined her furniture to allow for a better flow.
If you love the Fixer Upper Style, but don’t want to start over from scratch…here are 10 pieces to get you going on the Rustic Farmhouse style:
If I could only choose 10 elements from the Rustic Farmhouse Family Room I created, I would pick these! Adding just one or two items to your existing room will give a Fixer Upper flair to your space! Simply click on the link below to take you right there:
