Trend Alert: Navy Built-in Bookcases + Home Office Makeover
Hi Guys, Welcome to Postbox Designs! Today I wanted to share a real Home Office Makeover I created for a fun client in Colorado. This family recently moved into a new house, and she hired me to help her furnish the majority of the house. I will say: I LOVE working on whole houses projects: when we are finished, all of the rooms flow and work together. And there is nothing like walking through a home that feels like…home.
My client wanted a mix of modern and traditional elements in her home. She also wanted a neutral palette with pops of navy. While I worked on several rooms for her, today I want to share her Home Office makeover. One of the images she was inspired by was this image from the SF Decorator Showcase:

Trend Alert: Navy Built-in Bookcases for your Home Office
As you can see, the focal point of this Home Office is those drop dead gorgeous navy built-in bookcases. This inspirational Home Office from above was showcased in 2015 and this trend of deep navy colors has been growing ever since. Your Pinterest feed is probably full of navy kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms, but today I want to share how you can bring this rich navy color to your Study or any built-in. Navy is actually a neutral color so it can work with just about any color palette and style.
Modern Navy Home Office Makeover
If you are familiar with how I work, I always design TWO different mix-and-match designs for my clients. So I’m actually going to start with Design #2, which was the final version. Similar to her inspirational photo, I showed her navy built-ins on her back wall using Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy, a modern open legged desk, upholstered velvet chair, gold library lights, and a neutral boho rug.
Modern elements such as this World Market gold legged desk, the acrylic Target table lamp, and this sleek navy chair add some sleekness to her space. But she also wanted some traditional elements mixed into her Home Office, so we balanced it with this traditional wood dresser that she can use for extra storage and these gold library lights. Then we peppered in inexpensive touches like this faux fiddle fig, geo vases (that she can use to corral desk supplies) and two pieces of artwork that she already owned-both from my beloved Target.

But before I share the second Home Office design I created for her, I wanted to share some eye candy with you! If you think navy built-ins are a look you want in your own house-gather up some inspiration right now! While these navy built-ins work beautifully in a Home Office, you can also add them to a Hallway, Dining Room, Living Room…even incorporate them in a Kitchen or Bar area.
Most built-ins work best with a semi-gloss or high-gloss paint. You can make your built-ins look more traditional by adding crown molding to them, or leave them clean and modern. Adding sconces to your navy built-ins gives it an instant custom look.

Break up your navy built-ins with an oversized piece of artwork like this Home Office from Ashley Wittacker. She grounded the artwork with a comfy sofa and lowered sconces for reading lights. You could duplicate this look in a Sitting Room or Master Bedroom as well:

And here is Design #2 of the Home Office with navy Built-ins for my Colorado Mom. Just a reminder of the inspiration she gave me for a starting point. For this design she wanted to take the look of this Home Office but lighten it up with lighter, brighter blues:
How to Design a Modern Home Office with Navy Built-Ins
While the other Home Office design kept the dark navy colors with pops of gold, in this design I lightened things up a bit while still keeping the essence of the original Study design. In this design I used a sleek wood desk by World Market and a lighter gray velvet chair. Instead of dark navy artwork, I found these Etsy abstract prints with light blues-by putting them in a gold frame she can tie back the pops of gold in her decor. Instead of a dark wood storage piece, I found this campaign style blue and gold dresser from Target. The top opens up into a desk area, and she can use the bottom drawers for storage. We still kept the dark navy built-ins and a lot of the other modern accessories. But by swapping out just a few items we kept the feel of the space, but made it a bit more casual and light feeling.
Navy Home Office Design: Take Some Ideas Home
So there you go! Two different looks for the same Home Office Makeover. I think my client is going to go with Design #2 that has a darker, more glam look to it…and I think it is going to look fantastic. The best part is both designs are budget-friendly and user-friendly for this working Mom’s Home Office.
