One Room Challenge:
Traditional Coastal Bedroom + Bathroom Makeover
AHHHHH! It is One Room Challenge time again! If you have no idea what I’m talking about, it is the bi-annual Design Challenge thought up by Linda from Calling It Home where hundreds of designers makeover their selected rooms in just six short weeks. And I’m thrilled that this is the FIFTH time I’ve participated as a guest participant. In fact, you can check out all of my past One Room Challenge Makeovers by clicking below. These are actually all rooms inside my own home (as I totally need a kick in the pants to work on my own home instead of my client’s homes!)
In fact my very first One Room Challenge was my kid’s triple Homework Station and I was beyond shocked when it was pinned more than 100,000 times. That was over two years ago and we still love it and use it daily.
You can check out more detail on all of these makeovers, including the Mood Boards and Shopping Lists for each projecdt:

Design Freebies: Free Resource Library
And as a huge thank-you to following along during the One Room Challenge process, I started doing something special for my readers two cycles ago. For both the Farmhouse Living Room and Boy’s Adventure Theme Bedroom, I created a brand new freebie to go along with each week of the One Room Challenge Makeover. And I’m going to do the same thing this time around. Every single week I’m going to share a brand new Free Guide, Mood Board, Shopping List, and more to go with that week’s theme.
For last year’s One Room Challenge, here is a sample of the Freebies to go along with my son’s Bedroom Makeover. You can find all of these (along with dozens of others) in my
FREE RESOURCE LIBRARY
It is totally free, but you need a password to access it. You can sign up and will get the password to access it 24/7, plus you will automatically get links to all of the brand new freebies coming with this One Room Challenge. If you are already a member of my Free Resource Library, you can check in to see them all right HERE
But now introducing this cycle’s One Room Challenge from Postbox Designs:
One Room Challenge #5: Traditional Coastal Bedroom + Bathroom Makeover
So what I am tackling this time around? My very own Master Bedroom and Bathroom! Like so many of us, I have put other rooms ahead of our own Master Suite and it has been only cobbled together. In fact I haven’t done a single thing to our bathroom in four years. Yikes. But now it is finally time to do a full makeover. One of my most favorite parts of owning Postbox Designs is I get to design in ALL styles for my clients all over the country. But for my very own home, I tend to go with a coastal style. I like to mix in both traditional and modern elements. Oh yeah, and I have a major crush on both the color navy and horizontal stripes.
Traditional Coastal Bedroom Inspiration
So first I had to gather up some images of totally drool-worthy rooms that reflected this Traditional Coastal vibe for our bedroom makeover:
Coastal Beach Home
I love the crisp white sheets, pops of navy, and layers upon layers of weathered wood in this bedroom. The simple black and white beach photo gives a nod to the coastal look without going tacky.
Studio McGee
As always, Studio McGee can do no wrong! Again, I love these crisp white sheets, but this time paired up with a simple upholstered headboard. This coastal bedroom design goes a bit more traditional with the dark wood dressers and turned leg side tables.
Decor Apartment
I seriously have a problem with the color navy. If it is navy I’ll buy it. If it is navy and has stripes, I’ll buy two of them! So while I know pops of navy, and horizontal stripes will be included in my new Traditional Coastal Bedroom design, I’m going to have to restrain myself!
Home Bunch
What I love about this room is all of the layers of traditional, neutral elements. The room is far from boring with all of the different textures and subtle patterns though. this rattan bench gives just a slight nod to the coastal look.
One Room Challenge: Coastal Bedroom Makeover
Next week I’ll share the “Befores” of my existing (and equally as boring) bathroom, along with the inspirational photos of my bathroom makeover. Instead of a full blown remodel, I’m actually doing only a mini-makeover of my bathroom. No construction, no tools-I’m updating with paint and decor only. This should be fun! But for Week #1 of the One Room Challenge I’m going to share my plan for the Bedroom Mood Board with you:
Bedroom Makeover: The Before
Um, can you say BORING? Literally every surface of this bedroom is painted the same color of ivory: walls, ceiling, trim, doors, and fireplace. Add in a white fan and white carpet and you don’t have a lot of things to get excited about in this bedroom.
And while our bedroom is a large size, the sloped ceilings do make furniture placement a tad tricky. We will be keeping the existing carpet and the existing brick fireplace (but with an update). So all of the changes will come down to the bedroom decor.
Traditional Coastal Bedroom Mood Board
So how am I going to whip this boring bedroom into shape? After finding the looks of some coastal bedroom designs I love, I created this Traditional Coastal Bedroom Mood Board.
One Room Challenge Week #1: Design Freebie
Which leads me to the One Room Challenge Week #1 Design Freebie. I have this Bedroom Mood Board + the entire Shopping List with links to all of the sources. You can find both (and all future freebies) in my Free Resource Library:
