One Room Challenge: $950 Boho Bathroom Makeover Reveal
Welcome back to Postbox Designs! If this is your first time here-I’m Kristin. Wife, mom to three cuties, and I’ve been an interior designer for 13 years. However, after my own crazy schedule impeded with my work-life balance I realized there were so many people out there like me. So many people are busy, and the idea of tackling their own room makeovers seems so overwhelming. So with Postbox Designs all I do is Online Interior Design-designing rooms for clients all over the country. I mail them their room-inside-a-box with all of the drawings, instructions, shopping lists, and material samples they need to pull together their room on their time and their budget. It really is as fun and as it sounds!
However, since I’m always working on client projects, I don’t always get around to my own home projects. Until I found One Room Challenge! I participate in this 6 Week Design Challenge from Calling It Home to slowly work on my own projects. After six weeks we all get to share our big reveals with you all.
Okay, so technically it is only Week #5 of the One Room Challenge–and next week is typically the big room reveal. However, this cycle I decided to tackle my whole Master Suite-I’m doing a Traditional Coastal Bedroom Makeover AND Boho Bathroom Mini Makeover. Come back next week to see the full reveal of my Master Bedroom, but today I’m going to show you the reveal of my $950 Boho Bathroom Makeover!
Re-Cap: The Previous One Room Challenge Weeks
If you missed it, here is the recap of the first four weeks of my Master Bedroom + Boho Bathroom Makeovers.
As a bonus, every week during One Room Challenge, I created a custom Freebie to go with that week’s theme.

Modern Boho Bathroom Makeover: The “Before”
So…this is what I started with. It isn’t awful (believe me, we have bought houses with worse!), but it is just really boring, and not our style at all. Luckily there are enough neutral elements to the space that I was able to salvage a lot of the more expensive items.
Here is the existing bathroom. Remember what this looks like because I actually kept the existing cabinets and counter top, but gave it an inexpensive Boho style twist:

And here is the after! I painted the existing cabinets Benjamin Moore’s “Hale Navy”, add new cabinet hardware, faucets, and mirrors. And all of a sudden…this vanity wasn’t too bad after all!
Boho Bathroom Design Reveal
These outdated plate mirrors were two different sizes…and for a symmetrical girl like me, that drove me crazy. I had to do a little bit of drywall patching, but besides that, it was an easy swap to change out for these modern metal framed mirrors.
Probably the biggest change (and least expensive) was painting the vanity and swapping in polished nickel cabinet hardware.
$950 Budget Boho Bathroom Makeover Mood Board
So how do you makeover a bathroom without a full remodel? As boring as this bathroom was, and as much as I wanted to rip it all out and start over, I committed to just doing a Bathroom Mini-Makeover. Below, I listed all of the items I kept in the bathroom, and instead concentrated on more inexpensive, easy updates.
I created this Mood Board (see below) to come up with a plan for my Boho Bathroom Mini Makeover. Whether you want to do a similar budget bathroom makeover, or you are doing a full bathroom remodel, you can use these items to infuse some Modern Boho style into your bathroom.
You can get both the Boho Bathroom Mood Board & Source List in my Free Resource Library. When you sign up, you will receive an email with the link and password to access all of my design freebies. You will find all of the freebies from One Room Challenge, plus a dozen other free guides, worksheets, shopping lists, and more.

Boho Bathroom Mini Makeover: Items I Kept
I called this my Boho Bathroom Mini Makeover because I didn’t do any of the typical bathroom remodel projects. Instead it was simply an update using paint, hardware, and decor items. The only project that required tools was swapping out the faucets. But we kept them in the same location, with the same drill pattern, so it was a pretty simple project. In order to save oodles of time and money these were the items I kept in the bathroom mini makeover:
Existing countertop
Existing cabinets
Existing shower: door, tile, and plumbing
Existing bathtub: tub, tile, and plumbing
Existing tile floors
Existing lighting
All existing trim, doors, and windows
Boho Bathroom Mini Makeover: Updates I Made
Painted the existing cabinets Benjamin Moore’s “Hale Navy”
Changed out the cabinet hardware with modern polished nickel pulls
Painted the walls Benjamin Moore’s “Simply White”
Changed out the faucets to Delta “Cassidy” polished chrome faucets
Added a modern black and white art print
Changed out the frameless mirrors to modern metal-framed rectangle mirrors
Added a Boho rug runner
Added a wood tray to corral bath accessories & simple decor
Boho Bathroom Makeover: DIY Vanity Update
I personally think this vanity is a little crazy long with all of these cabinets! However, I can’t say we lack for storage in this bathroom. When I painted the cabinets navy, it did break up the huge expanse of ivory, so it let the countertop look even better than it did before!
If you can only do one thing to update your bathroom, I would choose to do new mirrors. It is usually such a focal point of a space, and you can get a great mirror for under $200. And having an eye catching mirror will help draw attention away from a dated vanity or floor.
DIY Bathroom Vanity Update #1:
One of the biggest ways I saved money on this Bathroom Mini Makeover was by keeping the existing vanity: I kept the cabinets and the countertop. The cabinet doors were pretty simple and classic, so I decided to keep them. And by keeping the vanity, I saved thousands of dollars. Instead, I painted them with Benjmain Moore’s “Hale Navy” paint in a semi-gloss finish. I used less than a quart of the paint ($20) to add two layers of paint to the entire vanity. The rich navy brings the much needed pop of color to the space! And because it is such a bold color, I wanted to go pretty neutral with the rest of the items.
DIY Bathroom Vanity Update #2:
Another big (but inexpensive) change to the bathroom vanity was adding in new cabinet hardware. I found hardware that fit the existing drilling on our cabinet doors, and was thrilled to find modern polished nickel hardware I could easily swap out. All of the doors got an update with these polished nickel hexagon knobs ($4) and the drawers got new modern polished nickel pulls ($4).
DIY Bathroom Vanity Update #3:
Since I was keeping the bathroom counter top I needed new faucets that would fit in the existing drilling pattern of the existing faucets.
I actually got my faucets for free.
I had won the Delta Mess Maker Pro Contest with another bathroom remodel I had down (our kid’s downstairs bathroom), and as part of the package I had won free plumbing fixtures. So while I didn’t pay anything for them, I did actually include the price of what I would have paid for them in my $950. Part of the reason I chose these Delta faucets was because I knew they would work with my existing top. Both my old and new faucets are called “centerset” facuets, so I could change them out while keeping the countertop.
Budget Boho Bathroom: Inexpensive Updates
Boho Bathroom Update #1: New Mirrors
One of the biggest eyesores of our existing bathroom were these frameless mirrors…that were different sizes. Our bathroom has a funky shape with sloped ceilings and an off-set window, so there was some asymmetry to deal with. However, having two different sized mirrors drove me crazy. So I was thrilled to finally get rid of them! Instead I replaced them with two modern, metal framed, rectangle mirrors. And they are blessedly the same size. That one tiny change (at $139 each) made such a big difference.
Boho Bathroom Update #2: New Artwork
Since I wanted a Modern Boho look, I knew I wanted some artwork to fit into this style. This black and white water print gave the bathroom a modern look. I chose a simple, inexpensive frame (that I already owned) in a 20″x30″ size for the wall. Finally, the adjacent Master Bedroom Makeover has a coastal look, so I wanted the attached bathroom to flow into that space. I found this print on Etsy for a mere $7!
These woven baskets were HomeGoods finds, and I can use to store extra towels. Plus I love how the rattan pattern added a bit of that Boho charm into the bathroom design.
Boho Bathroom Update #3: New Boho Rug
Probably the most “Boho” decor item in the whole entire bathroom was this inexpensive rug runner. It is colorful, bold, and pulls out the navy color from the newly painted cabinets. While the existing tile floors of our bathroom are pretty neutral, I did want to add something to break it up: so this runner solved the problem. The best part was it was a mere $44!
Boho Bathroom Update #4: Adding a Bathroom Tray
My husband hates clutter, so we actually tend not to have as many decor items as you think an interior designer might have! However, since our countertop is like 1,357 feet long, I really wanted something to break it up. And a bath tray is actually a really great way to corral bathroom items without cluttering up your entire counter. I found this warm wood tray for just $20, and I did add this has-absolutely-no-purpose-but-to-look-pretty $20 glass vase.
The greenery is actually a branch I had my kids pick for me from a bush in our front yard. Free decor is still always the best decor!
Budget Bathroom Makeover
So there you go…my $950 Mini Bathroom Makeover. No major projects or power tools. Instead paint and decor accessories brought this bathroom back to life for under $1000. This makeover is totally do-able for anyone, and cost far less than a full bathroom makeover.
