Boho Home Office Makeover: Part I
Friends! I am soooo excited to finally get to share this project with you! It has been in the works for several months now, and I’ve had to keep this project under wraps. This Boho Home Office Makeover is the result of three girl bosses coming together to make the magic happen. And after working with these ladies, I’m an even bigger proponent in us ladies pooling together our talents to make things come together.
I’ve known Peg, the blogger behind The Honest Mom for a few years now (we are fellow mamas who were in the same MOPS group!), and if you haven’t checked out her blog yet, I’ll wait so you can hop on over there. She talks REAL talk-the kind of stuff we all want to say, but secretly wish someone else would bring up first. Recently over coffee we talked about making over a spare room in her home. But as a typical Mom, she needed not one, but THREE different functions for her room. She wanted to create her own “She Shed” with a Home Office, Guest Bedroom, and Laundry Room all in a small footprint. Best yet, she has a fun, eclectic sense of style that she wanted to bring into her new space. Like so many of us work-from-home Moms, she needed a space that was free from her kid’s goldfish crackers and their sweet little requests…every two minutes.
And finally, we paired up with final girl boss Aly from Aly May Photo to capture Peg’s new Boho Home Office with her mad camera skills. She really showed off every nook and cranny of this space, so you can all glean some great ideas for your own home.
Oh P.S. This Home Office makeover is so chock full of goodness, this is only Part I of II. Be sure to check out my She Shed Makeover Part II and I’ll show you how we also fit a Guest Bedroom into this room.
The Before: Home Office
Here is what Peg’s Home Office looked like before. She had some hints of her fun boho style, but it was missing her personality.
The After: Boho Home Office Reveal
And here is the “After”! A cheery, colorful space that shows off Peg’s eclectic and fun personality. Like with so many of my clients, Peg knew what she liked, but just needed some help to pull it all together. She sent me photos of the items she already had that she loved. Then I had her fill out a Design Questionnaire and create a Pinterest board showing rooms she loved. She didn’t want to spend a ton of money on her space, so we used a combination of budget friendly items (Hello Target!) and some DIY hacks (I see you glammed-up Ikea shelves!). Read on to see how we pulled this Boho Home Office makeover off.

Like Peg, I’m a work-at-home-mom who is constantly trying to juggle working on my passions (designing rooms for you guys) and that horrible sense of Mom Guilt. Trying to balance it all around kid’s doctors appointments and frantically working during the nap hour. Whether you work from home too, or just need a space to call your own, I’m here to tell you…you are worth it. So whether you have a whole room or a corner of a kitchen, I’m giving you permission to find a place in your home to call your own.
And I want to help you out.
I created a FREE GUIDE: “Shop This Room” with two full Mood Boards full of the boho budget friendly finds from this Home Office Makeover, as well as the entire Shopping List. That’s right! You can re-create this room with just a few clicks, or just hunt down something that caught your eye.

Boho Home Office: The Desk
I’m going to show you more about this beautiful DIY desk makeover that Peg did in a future post, but I wanted to show you a glimpse of it. She wanted to keep her existing desk, and we gave it an upgrade with a glossy green coat of paint and matte gold hardware. Then we layered on the Boho details with this pompom garland, succulent photo, and modern gold and marble gold lamp. And how much are you in love with this “Mother Tasker” plaque? OMG.
I always suggest taking advantage of the vertical space over your desk to help keep your desk surface as clean and clear as possible. I love this desk trio of corkboard, gold grid, and white dry erase board. Hanging this pompom garland and leaning up some photos against her wall help fill up some of that space between the desk and her wall organizer trio.
Boho Home Office: The Shelves
Peg had the perfect corner to fit in a little reading nook/secondary work area so we wanted to dress up this corner! We took these budget Ikea shelves up a notch with a simple DIY hack. I told Peg to paint these simple brackets with gold spray paint for a glam touch..and she did a gorgeous job! Then we filled up her shelves with a mix of boho eclectic items she already owned, and sprinkled in a few more global elements. When styling open shelves, be sure to have a mix of high and low elements. You can bring in items you already have (she grabbed this trio of red books from downstairs when we were pulling together her shelves!). In a pinch? You can always add in a few framed photos-lean against the wall for a casual touch.

Because we added in so many bright pops of color and bold patterns, I suggested that Peg keep her walls pure white. And I loooove the final look. Everything just pops of these neutral, bright walls (plus it makes her room look so much bigger).
Another tip to styling open shelves is to repeat the same colors several times in your shelves. I loved her bright pop of red from her faux orchid, and we repeated it in this trio of red books (that she literally grabbed off her bookcase from another room), and repeats that same color. We also repeated this soft coral color in her artwork and in these boho vases. Finally you cannot go wrong with pops of gold with a Boho style. It adds some glitz and glam, but can still look crisp and modern.
Boho Home Office: The Reading Nook
One of Peg’s requests was to have some soft seating in the corner. She has a second place to work from her laptop or even meet with someone inside her own She Shed area. And I knew the perfect Boho chair from the moment I started designing this space: this navy velvet swivel chair. Isn’t it yummy? This Boho pillow and little white fur footstool make it even more comfy.
And can we talk about these pink fringe curtains? That add a soft, feminine touch to her Home Office and the fringe plays into that global Boho look. I am still looking for a place in my OWN home that I can use these!
5 Ways to Add Global Elements to a Boho Home Office
Love the global Boho style? Whether you are decorating a Home Office, Living Room, or Bedroom, there are a couple of classic Boho elements that always work for a space!
Boho Decor #1: Add Rattan
We added rattan in this gorgeous oversized rattan pendant. But you could do it with a chair, basket, or table. We also mimicked the look with this rattan and leather green chair-a treasure Peg snagged on Craigslist!
Boho Decor #2: Go Global with a Rug
I think a rug is the easiest place to add boho charm to any space. Look for aztec or diamond patterns, and if it has fringe on it…all the better. Classic global colors are deep greens, blues, reds, oranges, and yellows.
Boho Decor #3: Add Velvet
There is something about velvet that works so well in a Boho space. We used it in this gorgeous navy velvet chair (and you’re gonna see it some pillows too in Part II!). Bonus points for using velvet in deep jewel tones.
Boho Decor #4: Add pops of Gold
I mentioned it before, but gold is the perfect neutral for a Boho space. Look around this Boho Home Office and you will see gold sprinkled everywhere: her desk pulls, her shelves, her vases, her chair. The key is to space all of your gold throughout the room to keep your eye roaming!
Boho Decor #5: Add Greenery
Real or faux, greenery is a MUST HAVE for the Boho look. Succulents, cacti, and ferns are some of the classic Boho plants, but don’t be afraid to try something new. Even this red orchid pops in this Home Office space.
