5 Ways I Added Spring Updates to My Own Living Room Design
(P.S. Bonus points if you can find my kitty hanging out in this photo shoot)
Hi Friends, this is Kristin from Postbox Designs, E-Design and I’m tired of winter.
I don’t know if you heard, but this winter has been a doozy for a lot of us. I live in Michigan and my three kids have had…let’s count them now…14 Snow Days this year. We have had record snow falls and freezing cold temperatures. Living in the Midwest, this is just part of the gig (believe me, the Michigan summers are worth it), but I think I’m just about done with winter now. While I can’t change the snow outside my window, I am totally ready to do a “seasons change” inside my home.
So if you are looking to add a bit of brightness and airiness to your home, I have 5 Items that will add “Spring” to your Living Room in just a matter of minutes.
Living Room Spring Decor Update #1: Add Some Faux Greenery
I have been seeing faux greenery all over the place on Pinterest for awhile now, and I bet you have too. Items like fiddle figs and succulents are still popular as well as some of the more “farmhouse” greenery like ferns and eucalyptus. But to me, nothing says “spring” like a soft, fuzzy Lamb’s Ear plant. I remember seeing these in my Mom’s garden when I was growing up. I would usually pluck off a leaf and rub it against my cheek. It’s like nature’s fuzzy blanket. So I purchased a few of these Lamb’s Ear Faux Stems for my fireplace mantle. I keep this trio of glass vases out on my mantle all year round. This winter I grabbed some evergreen branches from my backyard and popped them inside. But this Spring season I’m swapping them out for these new sprigs.
Living Room Spring Decor Update #2: Light and Airy Pillows
I always tell my Interior E-Design clients that pillows are the #1 way to change out the whole look of your room. I’m a big fan of investing in good quality pillow inserts, then swapping out the covers as you wish. In these cold winter months, I tend to use heavier pillow fabrics such as velvet, or darker tones. But for spring, let’s lighten it up a bit! On my sofa I swapped out to these white and gray pillows. My ticking stripe pillows were custom made, but you can find a similar style with this Ticking Stripe Farmhouse Pillow
If you want some bonus points (I know you do!), I also personally use slipcovered sofas. I have three children and a beast of a Labradoodle so my furniture could be a pillow fort one day and a snack station the next day. This time of year I usually switch out my tan colored slipcovers to my lighter, brighter white ones. My sofa happens to be from Pottery Barn, but I also own slipcovered sofa from Ikea and love those too. Wayfair and Birch Lane are also great places to find the perfect slipcovered piece.
And I also updated the pillows on my wingback arm chair as well for a lighter look.
Living Room Spring Decor Update #3: Swap Out the Throw Blanket
Just like with the throw pillows, swapping out the throw blanket on your furniture can make a big difference. In the winter, we snuggle by our fire in chunky knit throws and my kid are obsessed with these ugly (yet super warm) faux fur blankets that we own. But come spring time, we start to throw open our windows and lighten up a bit. This tassel throw in my Living Room is a few years old so it isn’t available anymore but I love this Striped Cotton Tassel Throw Blanket for an airy look, but still giving you something to cuddle up with. And let’s be honest…in my house these throw blankets are also used for covering up stains on the sofa with guests come…just a free tip there!
Living Room Spring Decor Update #4: Freshen Up the Coffee Table
If I didn’t mention it before, please let me be clear: we are very relaxed and casual at my house! With young kids, pets, and a busy schedule, please know I don’t spend hours rearranging my room every week. In fact, I try to keep it pretty simple. So I have a bit of a formula for my coffee table. I did it once, then only slightly change it out with the seasons.
Coffee Table Styling Formula:
(1) Tray + (1) Vase + (1) Floral + Stack of Books + (1) Small Object
Seriously, I doesn’t change (unless that cat knocked everything over). So this is the same coffee table styling I had up this winter. Around Christmas time I filled it up with some holiday decor. But for spring, all I am doing is swapping out the greenery that is in my vase. I decided to go with these tiny white flowers called Gypsophilia Faux Flower Stem.
Aren’t they the cutest? And again, I’ll pop them in and won’t touch them again until summer.
Living Room Spring Decor Update #5: A New Area Rug
Full disclosure here, I keep this same jute area rug out all year. But I tend to go with a more coastal, cottage look anyways. But if your room is feeling dark and heavy, this is a really simple, and possibly inexpensive update. When you look at your Living Room, what are the biggest pieces in your space? Typically your sofa and the area rug. Because they are the biggest pieces, they tend to dictate how a room looks. So if you have an 8×10 area rug, that is 80 square feet of space you can brighten up! I’m a big fan of natural fiber rugs like jute and sisal for the warm months. They give a beachy type of look, but they are also naturally dirt and soil resistant. (Every parent out there just cheered). Mine is going on three years strong!
5 Minute Living Room Spring Decor Updates
Did you notice that I chose really simple swaps to update your Living Room? No painting, no construction projects…I didn’t even ask you to get out a single tool. Spring is such a busy time at my house with sports, school, and work. So these updates will take you the time to unpack the items and place them in your room! And if your house is anything like mine, your kids will happily open up those boxes in exchange for the packaging bubbles that come inside.
If you want some more spring update decor ideas, I would suggest staring with Spring Faux Stems, you might want to go for another look that is different from what I chose. But these leave-it-and-forget-it stems will be the easiest way to perk up your Living Room decor for the season.
