A Modern Farmhouse Living Room…A Little Less Rustic
Hi friend, Welcome to Postbox Designs! My name is Kristin, I’m a Mom to 3, Interior Designer, and I’m LOVING that school is finally out and my kiddos are home for the summer! I’m looking forward to tons of snuggle time, sleeping in, and lots of time at the pool.
And speaking of Moms, I want to share with you a recent Modern Farmhouse Living Room Makeover for a Mom of two. She and her husband are building their dream house in Indianapolis, and reached out to me for help with four different spaces while still in the construction process. She purchased the “Starter Room Package” for the design on her new Living Room…and I wanted to share it with you today!
And she requested a space that was Modern Farmhouse, but with a more polished, modern edge. So if you like your “Farmhouse” a little more sophisticated and less rustic….read on!
5 Ways to Create a “Polished” Modern Farmhouse Living Room
While a couple of years ago, a lot of my clients were requested rustic Farmhouse looks complete with cows and windmills, I have been noticing a large trend with keeping the Farmhouse style, but with a more modern feel to it. And while I show you today’s Living Room Design, I’m also sharing 5 Ways You Can Add “Polish” to your Modern Farmhouse:
Polished Modern Farmhouse Living Room Tip #1: Use Square Armed Furniture
If you want to go a bit more modern, look for “square” arms on your furniture, like this Pottery Barn sectional sofa (#2). Because this Indy Mom had two young children, I recommended she either go with a slipcover sofa (shown here), or the same sofa in a durable “Performance” grade fabric that will be more stain resistant.
On her pair of Pottery Barn armchairs (#12) we did go with a rolled arm, but ones with a more modern, sleek silhouette.
Polished Modern Farmhouse Living Room Tip #2: Think Geometric
When going for a more rustic Farmhouse look, I would work in patterns such a buffalo plaid, grain sack, or country ticking stripes. But in this more Modern Farmhouse, we took a more modern take on those classic fabrics. We used modern navy and white stripes (#7), modern “window pane” plaid (#14), modern geometric (#15), and pin stripes (#17). All of these pillows are from Etsy and are removable pillow covers, so Mom can take them off and wash them if needed.
Polished Modern Farmhouse Living Room Tip #3: Rustic Finishes + Modern Lines
I think one of the things people loved most about the rustic Farmhouse look was its distressed, casual feel. It felt like a room where you could put your feet up on the table and not use a coaster. I wanted to keep that same casual, relaxed feel for this family. And I love using distressed woods on heavy duty use items like coffee tables, because they hide of a multitude of sins. So we used this rustic-meets-modern coffee table (#5) and paired it up with more modern CB2 c-tables (#10).
We also mixed in more of this rustic wood finish in her bookcase styling items (#19, #23, and #31), so these pops of wood would be scattered throughout her Living Room.
Polished Modern Farmhouse Living Room Tip #5: Use Matte Finishes
I think matte black is one of the least trendy metals out there, and it can lend some sophistication to a Modern Farmhouse Living Room. From the Target curtain rods (#24) to the Magnolia accent clock (#18) and all throughout the room, we scatted in these pops of matte black.
We also used some matte white items such as this modern geometric vase (#20) and Target table lamp (#32)
Open Floor Plan Living Room
With all of my Postbox Designs clients, I always include a Floor Plan with notes so they can see exactly how to lay out their room. I don’t always include them in these blog posts, but I wanted to include this Floor Plan in to today’s Modern Farmhouse Living Room. These large Living Rooms inside an open Floor Plan are really popular…but it can be challenging for most homeowners to fill up. With the large size and high ceilings, you need to get the right scale furniture. Plus, you need a good layout that can sit a crowd, yet feel open and spacious.
Modern Farmhouse Home Office
Remember how I said this client requested help with four different rooms? As a bonus, I wanted to share the design for her husband’s Home Office!
I did this masculine Home Office a little differently: I gave her and her husband two different Home Office sets with a Farmhouse office desk, storage, and leather desk chair. There was also room for a small seating area with these Wayfair tufted wingback chairs (#2) with Pottery Barn small side table (#6) and brass table lamp (#7) as a grouping. To add a traditional pop, this classic plaid pillow (#3) for the wingback, gives a masculine look.
A Home Office is a personal place for a person, so I wanted to find out some of her husband’s interests to include into his office design. We took his love of the Indianapolis Colts, and I found these black patent style prints with football items (#5) for his Home Office walls.
