Shop the Look for These 4 Free Kid Room Designs
Hi Friend! Thanks so much for stopping by Postbox Designs! I’m an Interior Design, Mom to 3, and around here I’m about “Real Designs for Real Life”. If you scroll back in time before I was a Mom, I know I could design beautiful spaces for people. But once I became a parent, my whole view point changed. Have you noticed kids are messy and dirty and they WILL spill their juice on your most expensive rug…every time? So while I still want to design a beautiful space, I also want it to be durable, cleanable, and user friendly for REAL LIFE. And when I am working on kid room designs, it is even more so. I’m not going to select dry-clean only bedding for your toddler, or add in a $300 table lamp that you will cry over when (not if) it breaks.
So today I want to share a Round-Up of 4 Kid Room Designs. For each one I’m sharing the link so you can see even more of the makeover pictures and details. And I’m also sharing the Shopping List for each project. So you can literally Shop the Room!

Free Kid Room Designs #1: Coastal Shared Kid Bedroom
This is my own kid’s bedroom at our family Lakehouse! I have two daughters and a son, so I wanted a gender neutral space that worked for boys and girls alike. And since it is on a lake, I wanted a coastal vibe to the whole bedroom.
This is the design I stared with. You can grab it, as well as the Shopping List, in my Free Resource Library (you just have to sign up once, and all of today’s rooms will be inside)

One of my favorite things about this room is it is super budget friendly. The headboards were less than $100 and all of the bedding is from Target (starting at $20). These striped comforters are duvets so I can take them off easily to wash, then I layered on some cute navy and white pillows from HomeGoods. Each kiddo has a numbered pillow-for their birth order-so no one fights over whose bed is whose! All of the artwork in this whole shared bedroom are digital downloads from Etsy for a few dollars each.
Because we were tight on space, I used these metal barstools instead of nightstands. And the metal is durable and easy to wipe down. I chose wood table lamps so they would be less likely to break of they got knocked over.
And this little guys name is “George”…he protects the kids while they sleep!
Kid Room Designs #2: The Homework Station
Whether you have little kids or big kids, I’m a HUGE fan of having a big long table for them. Why? Because it is the ultimate multi-tasker! This can be an activity table, craft table, puzzle table, Lego table, homework table…and I’m sure your kids can come up with a dozen more ideas of what to do here.
In this project I turned an empty hallway into something much more usable-a triple Homework Station:

This triple Homework Station was super easy to build-no tools involved. The top and base are both from Ikea. The top is 8′ long so there is plenty of room to spread out for projects or puzzles. These farmhouse style desk chairs are a budget friendly Target find, as was the woven rug to help center everything.
Because this kid room is actually in a hallway, I wanted the space to be neutral and blend with the rest of the house. But I still brought in fun kid elements with some of the accessories. And for artwork, I simply framed a photo of each child over their work space. I’m always a fan of incorporating family photos into a space-it is the best free and personalized artwork.
And as the final touch, we installed an entire wall of shiplap (special tip: If you paint shiplap in a “semi-gloss”, it is a lot easier to wipe down than a traditional wall paint). And these three sconces add plenty of extra lighting to the space. If you want a great tutorial on how to install shiplap, this is the one we used HERE
Kid Room Designs #3: Adventure Themed Boy Bedroom Design
Oh boys. They are dirty and messy and wonderful. And my nine year old son loves all things outdoors. When he gets home from school, the first thing he does is run to our woods to play. So when I designed his new room for him, I went with a loose “Adventure” woodsy theme for him.

I was lucky enough to already own this set of rustic furniture as a hand-me-down. So we started with those pieces, then I layered on fun buffalo check bedding and this sweet “wanderer” pillow on his bed. This inexpensive army style blanket works well for chilly nights.
I love this Target bedside table because of the extra storage, and the metal finish makes it easy to wipe down.
All of the fun outdoors-inspired wall decor are from Etsy shops and I love the homemade look they bring into his bedroom space. We named the grizzly bear print “Mr. Bear” and regularly say good night to him as well when I’m tucking my son in!
Over his dresser, I blew up a digital download Etsy print into a 24″x36″ size for one simple focal point. And to avoid the cost and mess of bringing in an electrician, these rustic sconces are plug-ins. I found the dresser accessories at HomeGoods on one big epic shopping trip for his room!
This however, is my favorite part of his bedroom makeover. When my 91 year old grandfather passed away, I got his well-used National Parks pass that he used for decades. So I framed it and put it in my son’s bedroom as a reminder to never stop exploring and traveling.
Another shot of his nightstand. I filled the drawers with things like his books, so they are in easy reach.
We had enough space to create this reading corner with a Target chair and this swiss cross rug gives plenty of play space in his bedroom.
Kid Room Designs #4: Unicorn Themed Girl Bedroom Design
And for the final Kid Room Design in today’s Round-Up is this Unicorn inspired Girl Bedroom Makeover! My seven year old daughter requested a unicorn bedroom with dreams of a glittered full wall mural. Let’s just say we compromised a bit. But everyone was happy with the final result!
This is the design I stared with. You can grab it, as well as the Shopping List, in my Free Resource Library (you just have to sign up once, and all of today’s rooms will be inside)

I started with this sweet white spindle bed then layered on pink, white, and gold bedding from Target and Pottery Barn Kids. Some sweet throw pillows like this fuzzy heart pillow and unicorn add to the snuggle factor. But my daughter’s favorite part of her new bedroom is this bubble blowing alpaca. Who knew, right?
I bought this Target bulldog lamp before we even started on the room…it has absolutely nothing to do with unicorns, but Mom couldn’t resist. The little blue box use to have macrons in it, a little treat we brought back to her from a recent trip to over seas.
My daughter requested “pink and aqua” for her color theme. But I toned it waaaaay down into soft pastel colors. So we both “won”. The paint color on the walls is Benjamin Moore’s “Sweet Dreams”. Awww, right?
My favorite part of her room is this pink velvet sofa that I snagged at Wal-Mart of all places! It works as a reading and snuggling spot for her, but it folds down for sleepovers as well. I created this wall gallery using all prints from Etsy to bring in some more fun into her bedroom.
I always, always tell my clients to skip the changing table in a nursery and instead invest in a good quality low dresser. That is what I did when my oldest daughter was born 11 years ago…and here it is, still in use in my younger daughter’s bedroom. All I did for this makeover was to swap out the dresser drawer knobs to these gold fauceted ones. Both the unicorn print and tassel garland are Etsy finds as well. And that little gold horse you see under the cloche…a dollar store find that I spray painted gold.
Thanks so much for joining me on today’s Round-Up of free Kid Room Designs…I hope you found some ideas for your own kid room designs!
