Modern Farmhouse Living Room Makeover
Hi friend, thanks so much for stopping by Postbox Designs! If you are new here: I’m Kristin, Mom to 3, Interior Designer, and you can find me in a T-shirt and flip flops all summer long. When I’m not designing, I’m hanging with my kiddos, so it stays pretty casual around here. At my house we are in the final weeks of summer, and we are trying to soak up every minute before the new school year.
Over here, all I do is Online Interior Design, so I get the joy of working with wonderful clients all over the country. That means I can custom design my client’s room from thousands of miles away…people I would never have gotten to meet otherwise. And today I want to share one of those projects. My client reached out for help with their brand new home. She had a two story room and wanted a Neutral Modern Farmhouse Living Room Makeover…and I was thrilled to help!
Let’s take a tour!
How to Create a Modern Farmhouse Living Room: 2 Ways
With all of my Room Packages, I create a custom design for my client, then I send it to them for feedback. After that, I do an entire round of revisions based on it. This time I’m staring with their final selected version. My client had a few pieces she wanted to incorporate into her room such as this painting (#3), leather ottoman (#5), wall mirror (#20), and tray (#29). Then I helped her build a new Living Room design around her pieces:
We started with this large Pottery Barn sectional (#2) to center the whole space…and it is big enough for their family of five to snuggle up on for movie nights. Then we loaded it up with neutral Farmhouse style pillows (#10-14). To bring some color to the space, this warm colored rug (#4) pulls in all of the different colors from the room, and creates a cozy look.
If there is a space, I always suggest adding a sofa table if your sofa is floating in the room…the back of a sofa is never the prettiest of views. So this black distressed console table (#6) did the trick and added some extra storage. We added some pretty (but very durable pieces that would hold up to her young kids) such as these metal vases (#8 and #9) and lanterns (#23). The family has a love of koi fish, so we could even incorporate this little gem (#22).
For extra seating we added this Pottery Barn armchair (#7) and jewel toned velvet pillow (#34), and a set of metal nesting tables (#15).
This Living Room had a unique feature-a large wall niche. We drew attention to this feature by painting it a deep blue (#30) and hung an oversized wood ring print (#26) centered in the space. To make this piece feel more special, a battery operated brass wall sconce is hung over it (similar to the image in #26 from the blog ‘Chris Loves Julia’). The sconce we chose is battery operated so no electrician or drywall work was needed.
Modern Farmhouse Fireplace Decor
One of the main focal points of the room was this two story stone fireplace. So I helped my client choose pieces to draw attention to this beautiful feature. Modern metal candlesticks (#16) and neutral artwork such as this black and white map print (#32) and an existing beloved forest print (#3) will fill up the space.
Let’s Bring This Living Room Design to Life!
My client purchased my Full Design Room Package so a 3D rendering of her Living Room design was included. I love creating these renderings because my client could see every piece arranged together in her room before ordering a single item. And when it comes time to pull her room together, she can refer to this as another guide.
Modern Farmhouse Living Room Design: Take Two
Remember in the beginning on this blog post how I always create two versions for my clients? This was the original Living Room design I created for my client. You can see it has a lot of similarities, but this version has a bit more color to it.
Add Color to a Modern Farmhouse Living Room
In this Living Room design, all of the main pieces are still very neutral, and the same area rug has some warm, cozy colors to the space. But more color is sprinkled throughout the space with his blue console table (#6) and a series of more colorful throw pillows (#10-14) with the color blue as the consistent theme through them all.
Some more differences in this version are these Target ceramic vases (#8 and #9) and wood candle holders (#16).
A few more differences in this Modern Farmhouse Living Room are different table lamps (#24) and French Country rustic chandelier (#33). And finally, the coffee table decor has a different look with this metal World Market tray (#29) and faux hydrangea plant (#28).
So which version would you choose? Version #2 has a more Neutral Modern Farmhouse look and Version #1 has some more pops of colors. My client went for Version #2 and I hope it becomes the perfect room for her sweet family!
