Modern Neutral Basement Makeover
Ok friend, you came on the right day! Over here at Postbox Designs, Interior E-Design, I’m a busy Mama of three who spends her time designing room for my wonderful clients all over the country. From my office here in Michigan, I use Online Interior Design to virtually design my client’s spaces…and it is a blast. And today I’m sharing not one, but FOUR different room designs with you today! This Modern Basement Makeover is so cool…they may never need to go upstairs again!
This New Jersey Mom reached out to me for help with her entire Basement Makeover. She wanted a space that was modern and neutral, with a light and airy look. In this space we added a:
Game Room with Home Bar
Laundry Room
Playroom
Music Room & Stage
Theater Room (not shown)
Bathroom (not shown)
Want to take a tour around her space? Let’s do it!
Modern Basement Home Bar
The very first room in her Basement is an open space that we turned into a Game Room, Seating Area & Home Bar! I designed a bar for her with black cabinets (#4) decked out with matte gold cabinet hardware (#5) and modern quartz counters (#2). For a modern pop, these white geometric tiles (#10) are from Home Depot, and adding a few distressed wood shelves (#3) give her some clean, streamlined storage. And I fell hard for these little black and brass beauties from Shades of Light (#9) for extra lighting in the space. And if you have water access in your Basement, it is always nice to have a sink (#7 and #8) in your Home Bar.
Modern Basement Game Room
With two young boys, this Mom wanted a Game Room/Hang-out Space for her family and friends. In this first design I created for her, a large pool table centers the space. Along the wall we put a long seating area in a bar-style with pendant lights and barstools (you can scroll down to see those).
You can also see a sneak peek into her Laundry Room area….I’ll show you inside that room as well!
Modern Playroom Design
But I think my most favorite part of her Basement Makeover is the Playroom for her boys. The dedicated Playroom space is open to their Living Room/Theater Room area, so I wanted to keep the same modern, neutral look…but with a more playful tone.
How to Create a Modern Playroom that Is Still Fun
So how do you create a modern Playroom that is still fun and comfy for the kids? For this Playroom Makeover, it was all about keeping the color scheme. Black, gold, white, and pops of navy are the main colors of the entire Basement makeover-including this kid space. However, fun artwork such as this modern US map (#3), felt pennant (#8) and kid-centric graphic prints (#11) are easy ways to add in some charm.
And I don’t know about your kids, but my kids love all things comfy! So this Serena and Lily hanging chair (#9) and Target faux fur pillow (#7) make up a fun ready nook. A cozy West Elm rug (#5) gives the boys a soft place to play over the wood floors.
And finally, I’m all about the organization in all kid spaces! This Cameron unit from Pottery Barn Kids (#2) is hands down my favorite storage system. I love the combo of cubbies, closed doors, and drawers so you can keep those kid’s messes put away.
Modern Kid’s Music Room
I think one of my most fun & unique part of this modern Basement makeover was her boy’s Music Room. And not only do these boys get a Music Room to rock out in….they get an entire stage to perform on! I suggested this black wood treatment (#1) on the walls to provide a fun texture that also works for sound absorption. For a modern look, the Music Room will be separated by the rest of the space only by these oversized glass doors (#2) that can have decals applied.
For the main wall of the Music Room, we found this removable wall decal (#4) from Etsy, with a mixing board image-this will be the first thing you see when you walk into their Music Room. Friends can watch, while hanging out on super comfy seating like these modern leather bean bags (#5) and build-you-own-sofa (#6) are both from Pottery Barn Teen.
Modern Neutral Laundry Room Makeover
When I was a kid, Laundry Rooms were usually a long forgotten area tucked into an unfinished basement. No more my friend! Now the Laundry Room can be as fancy as your Living Room. And for as much time as us Moms spend in our Laundry Room…it should be!
If you are looking for a neutral color for your cabinets (but don’t want white or gray), I would suggest trying a “mushroom” color. This color has gray and brown undertones with a modern look to it. For my client, I suggested Benjamin Moore’s “Sherwood Tan” (#3). Gold hardware (#10) and white quartz counters (#11) keep with this neutral look. But I think my favorite part is these modern globe lights from Shades of Light (#5 and #6) that are especially glam for a Laundry Room. While recessed can lights are practical, adding a fancy light will make you smile when you walk in to fold your clothes…I promise!
Both this modern elongated white subway tile (#8) and dark gray floor tile (#9) are both from Home Depot. And I loved these modern wire laundry baskets from The Container Store (#4) that can tuck away neatly (and be rolled into different rooms as well!)
We had an unfinished space to work with, so my client and I worked together to create several different designs. In the end, my client chose this version with maximum counter space, plenty of storage, a hanging area, and a beautiful farmhouse apron sink. If you have the room, I like to add a built-in trash can into the cabinetry (like you see in a Kitchen).
Not only is counter-to-ceiling subway tile beautiful-but it is also really practical in a wet area like a Laundry Room.
Modern Neutral Basement & Bar Seating Area
And finally, last but not least….here is the rest of the design for my client’s Game Room & Bar:
I created a Mood Board for my client to show her the “overall look” of her space. Light oak floors (#2), black interior doors (#5-these are from Home Depot), and brass door hardware (#9-also from Home Depot) give a glam, modern look. Simple globe lights (#3) and all white walls (#8) will make her Basement feel airy and bright. I recommended Benjamin Moore’s “Simply White”
If you are tight on space, I love adding extra seating with a wall mount bar. I used this inspirational photo (#1) to create a quartz countertop with “waterfall” edge and leather stools. While this isn’t my client’s style, Image #3 shows the concept of a wall mounted bar with stools. I gave my client a couple of lighting options of these modern brass pendants over her eating area (#7), and this West Elm chandelier (#10) over their pool table.
