California Casual Basement Makeover Come To Life
Hi Friend, welcome to Postbox Designs, Interior E-Design! I’m a Mama of 3, an Interior Designer, and have been doing exclusively Online Interior Design for over five years now. It is amazing-I get to work with clients all over the country, creating custom design for them. I start by sending them a Welcome Packet, and by the time we are done with the process…I feel like we KNOW each other, even if we have never met. And the ONLY bad thing about this gig…is I don’t always get the see the final result. So I am so thankful when my fabulous clients take the time to send me photos of the “afters” of their space.
A few months ago I shared the design for this California Casual Basement Makeover, and now I have something exciting to share…you get to see this Postbox Design come to life! I’ll re-cap the original design and then give you a tour around the new space!
How to Create a California Casual Basement Makeover
So what is “California Casual”? To me, it is a mix of neutral moderns with a more rustic, casual look. I think of soft, comfortable fabrics that are easy to live with, and a laid-back vibe. In this project, we went a step further and actually incorporated beach items like retro California prints, a real surfboard, and plenty of whites, blues, and tans. And nope, you definitely don’t have to live in California to bring this style to your home.
This Basement Makeover started when the coolest Mom came to me. She has a teenager son and she wanted to create a Basement Hang out for him and his friends (that Mom and Dad are allowed to visit occasionally as well). I told her:
“Get ready to be the cool house on the block…because no one is leaving this Basement now”
Let’s just say in my teenager days, I did NOT have a place this cool to call my own. My client requested a full Basement design with a Living Room, Home Bar, Game Room with Pool Table and bar style seating, and a place for her son’s drum set.

The Basement Living Room Design in Real Life
And here is the actual Living Room…from design to real life! Don’t you love how she pulled everything together? I love the California Cool meets modern…yet still comfortable and inviting. If I was hosting a party…this is where I would have everyone hang out…
Basement Makeover: Game Room + Home Bar
Here was the original design elements for the Game Room, Home Bar, and snack area:
(P.S. In my client’s Postbox, she got a digital Shopping List, Floor Plan, and instructions for how to pull it all together, and what goes where!)
Basement Makeover: California Cool Home Bar
And here it is in real life! They created this Home Bar out of the modern black Ikea cabinets I suggested (#24 and #25), along with the floating shelves…and the real focal point…this fun shiny surf board (#19). The Home Bar is at the bottom of the stairs, so I love how this is the first thing everyone will see when they enter the space.
Extra Seating Area in the Game Room
There was some extra space on the end of the Game Room (see that space below), so I suggest creating an extra seating area with a wall mounted counter and stools. We use Image #28 as an inspiration, and my client used a pre-finished wood counter from Ikea and rattan stools (#26 and #27) to bring it to life. A modern plug-in light (#33) hangs over this cool cow print my client already had. Now guests can watch their friends play pool and have a place to snack too!
Basement Makeover: The Game Room
My client already had the pool table and light fixture, but wanted some help with artwork for the walls. She loves horses, so I found this trio of black and white horse prints (#30) and some modern beachy prints (#7 and #8) to fill up the walls. And I love how these crisp white walls just POP and make her basement seem clean and bright, don’t you?
Basement Makeover: The Teen Boy Hang-Out
I also like to always ask my clients about interests and hobbies. Your home should be a reflection of YOU (not your interior designer!). Since this space was largely for her teenage son, she mentioned he loves Quentin Tarantino movies. Keeping with the modern theme, I found these fun prints from some of his most famous movies (#31) to hang in his music area with his drum set.
And here it is in real life. Um, if this Mama doesn’t get some “cool Mom points” for this makeover, I don’t know what!
Thank-You!
Once again a HUGE thank-you to my fabulous client-you were a joy to work with, I love how your space came together, and thank-you for taking the time to send me photos and allow me to share them with the world. This is EXACTLY why I love Interior E-Design-I worked from my office in Michigan to help this Mama pull together her dream space thousands of miles away. And I hope the process was as fun and easy for you as it was for me!
