A “Livable” Living Room Design
Blog post writing has taken a back seat as my kiddos and I spent the summer exploring every beautiful thing our state of Michigan has to offer. We spent a lot of time hiking, swimming, and exploring our favorite beaches. There was even a gnome hunt at a winery…
But in the meantime, I continued working with some of the most amazing clients all summer long! From coast to coast, the beauty of Interior E-Design is I get to work with fantastic people all all of the country, custom designing their spaces. You can check out more about How It Works as well as Room Packages & Pricing and while I work with all types of clients, most of them have kids. And as a Mama of three myself, its really important for me to design spaces that look great, but function even better. So read on for some tips on how to design a Kid Friendly Living Room Design!
Kid Friendly Living Room Design Tips
1.Go with “Performance” fabrics. This Pottery Barn sofa comes in dozens of Performance fabrics, even including Crypton and Sunbrella options. Think extra super duper durable
2. Leather Rocks. Leather is easy to wipe down and looks better with age (just like wine)
3. Use inexpensive rugs. I always will suggest high quality furniture to stand the test of time. But with rugs and little kids….this is where I would go budget friendly. Area rugs get a lot of wear and tear, spills, snack time go wrong. I want my kids to feel comfortable in the Living Room and I don’t want to cry over a rug getting ruined, so I love to source rugs (like this one) from RugsUSA.com
4. Rustic Wood Coffee Table. Like a rug, a coffee table gets a lot of use, so even in a modern Living Room, some type of rustic or patterned wood (think oak) is going to be more durable than glass or painted wood.
5. Pillow Covers. You can take them off and wash them. Genius.
Living Room Design: The Second Space
With this client, we had two rooms that opened into each other-two Living Rooms in a way of speaking. One side we called the “TV Room” side (for cozy movie nights) and the “Fireplace Room” side where they can snuggle up with a book in front of the fire. Both Living Room designs had to coordinate, and still have slightly different functions.
This side has all of the same 5 Kid Friendly Living Room Design Tips. When you are designing rooms that open into each other, I suggest finding “coordinating” pieces instead of “matching pieces”. Repeat the same elements, and colors into both spaces to tie them together. Both Living Room designs have a tan, gray, white, black, and navy color palettes to keep things look cohesive.
Bonus Kid Friendly Tip: And one last tip I wanted to share from one Mom to another…go budget friendly on lamps! These tend to get knocked over or moved around, so this Living Room design shows off a selection of table and floor lamps all from…Target. 🙂
And as a finishing touch, I helped her find some items to style her existing shelves…
