Small on Square Footage, Big on Design. Small Space Design Ideas
Hey hey! Welcome to Postbox Designs Interior E-Design, around here it is all about Real Life designs. I’m a working Mom, and probably like you-I want a house that is beautiful, but also livable.
And one of the best things about working with my clients via Interior E-Design is I get to work with clients all over the country. And I was thrilled to help this fun couple and their young son decorate multiple rooms of their home. They recently went through a full house renovation of a DC Rowhouse. And when I think Rowhouse-I think super cool modern vs. historic, yet…also small. So with this house we had to deal with small space designs that can rock in a small footprint.
A Modern Neutral Design in a Small Space
This small space design needed to fit a Living Room and Foyer/Entry, and it is also open to their newly remodeled Kitchen. So every piece had to work hard in this Living Room space.
Small Space Design: Living Room Decor
We centered this whole Living Room space on this modern neutral sofa (#2) and fun fact it is from Ikea of all places! Then we layered on these beautiful, organic patterned throw pillows (#4,7, and 15-18) When you are dealing with space spaces, you want to choose your furniture carefully. These small cane chairs (#5) are light and airy, and will actually make the room feel larger. And this great black oak console (#3) will work for TV storage as well as extra toy storage for their son.
Small Space Design: Foyer Decor
Because this space had to do double duty, we also needed a Foyer in the space. This slated wood cabinet (#13) is a better use of space than a table for that precious extra storage. And because it is the first thing you see, it was important for it to look lovely while still being functional on the top. Table lamps, vases and candles style the space, but the white bowl (#11) will double up as a catch all for keys, wallets, loose change, etc.
Small Space Design: The Primary Bedroom
The second space we worked on together was their Primary Bedroom. Again, every inch counted in this small footprint of a space. Because it is a small room, the bed is the major focal point of the space. And here are a couple of ground rule tips I always use for styling up a bed:
4 Tips for Styling a Bed
Tip 1: Use light colored linen (or cotton) sheets (#4), I love the ones from Pottery Barn & West Elm. These are soft as can be, and give a casual look (i.e. no ironing)
Tip 2: Use a duvet (#2). A duvet can easily be switched for the season, or to be washed. And I think nothing beats a fluffy down duvet insert.
Tip 3: Fold a quilt/coverlet on the end (#3). This is a place to add color/texture. I think without one, a bed tends to look empty. Plus it is practical for chilly nights.
Tip 4: Add an accent pillow (or few). In this case I’m suggesting a pair of modern striped pillows (#14). I like to max out accent pillows at three.
And if today’s small space Living Room design got some ideas going…I have not one, but FOUR more Living Room designs to share with you. Modern, Neutral, Farmhouse-it is covered in this Living Room Round-up: Enjoy!
