The Secret to a Modern Playroom Design: Cute AND Practical
Hey there! It’s Kristin from Postbox Designs Interior E-Design, and it is no secret (and as a mom to 3) that kid rooms are my favorite space to design. So today I’m thrilled to share my latest modern Playroom Design with y’all!
Having a playroom that is both stylish and practical is a dream for many of us Moms scrolling through Pinterest…until you come back to real life. Toys stuffed into bins never to be found again. Scattered legos make you not want to brave crossing the floor. And desks are covered with piles of “treasures” You want a space that reflects your modern aesthetic while still being functional for your child’s needs. But how do you strike that elusive balance between style and practicality?
Today’s modern Playroom I’m sharing I hope achieves a modern neutral design that not only looks fabulous but simplifies your daily life of this family of four.
Modern Neutral Playroom: Grabbing the Right Color Palette
When it comes to selecting colors for a modern neutral playroom, think beyond just whites and beiges. While these hues certainly have their place, consider incorporating other shades such as soft grays, muted blues, and warm earth tones. These colors can add depth and visual interest to the space without overpowering it. I’m throwing in some wood tones and soft taupes along with a pop of color on the kid’s desk area.
Another way to incorporate modern neutral colors is through the use of accent pieces and accessories. Think about adding pops of color through throw pillows, rugs, artwork, or even storage bins. By using these smaller elements to introduce splashes of color, you can maintain the overall neutral feel of the playroom while still infusing it with personality and style.
Choosing Functional Playroom Furniture
When it comes to designing a stylish and practical playroom, selecting the right furniture makes all the difference. This play table can be a dreamy super star functioning as an arts & crafts table, Lego table, homework table, puzzle table, you can go on and on. And what Mom does love to multi-task? I paired it up with light dining chairs that can easily be moved when friends come over. When selecting furniture, think about adaptability. Look for pieces that can grow with your child and be repurposed as their needs change. For example, a small table and chair set can be used for arts and crafts now, and later transition into a homework spot or a place for board games.
In Playroom Version #1 I showed an option for a sofa & coffee table for movie nights. But in Playroom Version #2 we added in a larger playroom table, which is now the star of the room, and small foosball table in the corner.
Toy Storage: The #1 Need of any Playroom Design
One essential piece of furniture to consider is a multipurpose storage unit. Opt for units with shelves, cubbies, and drawers, providing ample space to neatly organize toys, books, and art supplies. These versatile storage solutions not only keep the playroom tidy but also add an element of style to the overall design. I love these West Elm cubbies where you can stash these cute bins.
Lego Storage: The Key to this Playroom Design
This mama specifically asked for tons of Lego storage, Lego display areas, and a Lego desk. I loved the inspiration of having a big peel and stick decal on the wall and then a full wall of ledges for kids to display and organize their Lego creations. Consider using low shelves or wall-mounted cubbies to display items at child-friendly heights, creating a visually appealing and accessible space for them to make all their own.
These pair of side-by-side desks can work as Lego tables or art tables.
