5 Day Design Challenge Day 1:
Update your Master Bedroom Bedding
If you are brand new to Postbox Designs, then Welcome, I’m so glad you are here! Before we start the Challenge, I just wanted to introduce myself to you. I’m Kristin, I’m a wife, mom of three kiddos, and a fur-baby Jasper, our Labradoodle. I’m obsessed with those frosted sprinkle animal crackers, I wear flipflops all summer long, and I hate doing the dishes. I’ve been an interior designer for 13 years now (wow, I feel a bit old now). I had only been working part-time, but in 2015 I ended up quitting the job that I loved because I needed to be home with the kids. Stress was mounting on all sides of our life and a lot of it was because of me. I was trying to do it all without enough hours in the day. Mom guilt can be an ugly thing people! But I still wanted to do what I loved, while still being able to be home with my kids.
Then I realized there were so many other people out there like me. You are over-scheduled and busy, and finding the time in your schedule to either leave work or find a baby sitter to meet your designer all over time can be next to impossible. And running all over town with your toddler in tow trying to find accessories to make your home cuter? Forget it.
So I launched Postbox Designs, it is all Interior E-Design which means I can do all of my work for you virtually. I custom design your room and mail your entire room-in-a-box full of drawings, samples, shopping lists, and more right to you. You can order your entire room in an hour over a cup of coffee in your PJs. You never have to leave home. I have gotten to work with clients all of the country, and it’s been a blast. Plus I get to see my clients that were overwhelmed and hated their rooms now have a plan to take action and makeover their new spaces. Now that you know me, I want to jump right into your home and help you make it beautiful!
Welcome to Day #1 of the Postbox Designs 5 Day Design Challenge. So Why 5 Days? Here’s what is going on in my harried, multi-tasking Mom brain of mine:
I’m a former Type A, hyper organized nerd whose need for perfection has been beat out of her by my three darling children. 😊 So today when I walk through my home and one room is messy I can deal. But when I start wandering through and every room is destroyed, my first born child need for perfection starts rearing it’s ugly head. All this to say, is I can deal with one room that isn’t to my liking, but when my whole house needs to be dealt with: home isn’t as much fun.
So with our 5 Day Design Challenge, it gives us enough time to touch FIVE DIFFERENT SPACES IN YOUR HOME. So you can see progress and start to feel the change! However, we aren’t going to try to tackle everything in your home during this Challenge. That is overwhelming and stressful. I want this to be fun!
So try it all now or Save & Pin the images for later…when that elusive “free time” comes your way! Some Challenges are small and easy, and a couple take a little bit more time. You can tackle them all at once, or just breathe a sigh of relief that now you have a PLAN and you can buy items one-by-one as your budget allow.
But before I get to today’s Challenge, I want to give you a heads up…on Day #5 I’ll be revealing a BRAND NEW PRODUCT LAUNCH (and I’m giving you a killer discount for my readers only!)
Since launching Postbox Designs I have had a lot of people tell me they love the Postbox look, but custom design isn’t in their budget. I have heard you and found a way to still give you hand-chosen pieces for your style (and budget), but at a fraction of the cost. Stay tuned my friends. It will be worth the wait.
Day #1 of the Postbox Designs 5 Day Design Challenge
I wanted to start with the Master Bedroom because that is supposed to be our area of peace and quiet. But when you walk into your bedroom to see mis-matched sheets, piles of dirty laundry, and your daughter’s Shopkins collection, well, it doesn’t feel like much of a retreat. So if you can only do one thing…update your bedding.
And we are all busy so let’s make it simple:
SHEETS + DUVET +ACCENT PILLOW+THROW
I found this beautiful bedroom from Serena and Lily-it is peaceful, classic, and strikingly simple. You can certainly buy all of the pieces directly from them, but I also pulled together four similar elements to create this style (starting at just $19.99):
Throw Blanket Duvet Sheets + Euro Shams Accent Pillow
2018 Update: A couple of these items have been discontinued so here are a couple of alternative options for you!
Woven Diamond Lumbar Pillow Striped Throw Blanket
And if you want extra credit, an upholstered headboard creates the perfect hotel-worthy look (plus you save oodles of money because you can use a simple bed frame paired up with headboard instead of buying a whole new bed):
This beauty is from Wayfair and cost a mere $192 for a Queen size (plus comes in multiple colors!) Find it HERE
No matter your style, if you follow this simple formula you can purchase only 4 Items and have a whole new bedding set in as long as it takes the items to ship to your doorstep! I like the idea of just four items because it keeps it simple. I’m a busy Mom of three and I don’t have time to make my bed look perfect everyday. Let’s be honest, most days it doesn’t even get made! Plus with just updating your bedding with four items, it is really easy to swap things out later. By simply switching out just your “accent pillow” you can get an entirely new look. Switch it out for the season!
I like to keep it simple with just owning two sets of sheets per bed. I’ve found personally that if I have more than that, one set always ends up smushed at the back of the closet and never gets used anyways! Or I have multiple sets of pillowcases floating around in the laundry! With two sets, one stays on the bed, and the other goes into the wash.
If you like the Boho Chic Bedroom look:
Use the exact same formula, but with a global twist. Try adding some pops of bold color, global aztec prints, and layer on some pompoms or fringe! Starting with white and adding pops of navy, gold, and black & white prints is a great start.
Or if you like it more neutral, stick with a black and white bedding palette but let those global prints shine with texture and interest. Keeping it all neutral, then adding in one pop of color with a bright accent pillow can be simple yet totally stunnning.
Or if you like the neutral Modern Farmhouse Bedding:
A LOT of my clients are requesting this Fixer Upper Farmhouse look for their bedrooms. Layer on grays, whites, and beiges for a neutral and calm palette. For pattern, try a subtle ticking stripe or texture such as cable knit or basketweave. A neutral stripe, such as this duvet also screams Fixer Upper style!
I personally like to keep the bedding simple (you don’t want it to take 20 minutes to make every morning), but I love this diagram from Isabella Studio that has just about every pillow combo you can think of…how clever is that? If you weren’t sure about how many pillows, what types, and where to put them, she created this diagram to help you figure it out. I love it!
So I promise…you can do this! Four items and you are on your way to a whole new look for your Master Bedroom. Just imagine eating cookie dough watching movies in your fluffy new bedding. That’s what I would do anyways.
Now that you have some inspiration to start, I don’t want you to stop there.

Hi, I’m looking for the source for this diamond blue throw pillow but don’t see it. Could you tell me where that’s from? I tried to search for the image online too. 🙁 Thanks!

Hi Melanie, I love that pillow too! I just looked it up and while I do have a link for you, the bad news is it is no longer available. 🙁 Ahhh, so sorry!!! It is from Target, so maybe they have a new pillow out that looks similar! https://www.target.com/p/blue-tan-diamond-oversized-throw-pillow-threshold-153/-/A-51355931
