If the tree is the star of the Christmas decorating play, then I would call the mantle it’s leading lady.
This is the time of year where you can have some fun with your fireplace! Growing up as a kid, my sister and I would be so excited to hang up our stocking on the mantle every year. We would fight over who’s was the prettiest (mine was of course!), and my Mom would put out my little sis’s giant collection of Nutcrackers around the garland. My Dad would join in on the fun, and help lug out all of the boxes of decorations. We were the type of family that LOVED traditions, and would happily pull out the same decorations each year, with a few new additions every so often.
For me this year? With three young kids and a new pup, we like to keep it fun and simple. This year I discovered the $3 pompom garland from Target in my beloved Dollar Section. On one fireplace we strung these along with some casual striped stockings. “Bessie” got some holiday cheer with a little garland that I made from my kid’s construction paper.
Our other fireplace is only slightly more formal. I carried on the theme of the pom poms, but added some greenery and ribbon. Three years ago I made our felt silhouette stockings from about $10 worth of felt. Last year our youngest, Adelyn, was in tears because her stocking looked like a little boy since she was only a hairless babe when I made hers. So in good mama fashion I cut out and sewed a little pony tail on for her. Crisis adverted. They all love to point out which is theirs.
