Hi Friends!
Rustic Boho Living Room: Part II
Welcome back to Part II of this Rustic Boho Living Room that I recently worked on with an amazing client in Texas. She was especially fun to work with, not only did she know her style, but it is FUN, BOLD, and COLORFUL style. If you missed Part I of this Living Room Makeover check it out right here:

And today is Part II! The same room but a whole new look…which brings us to my 2018 trend prediction…
#1 Design Trend Prediction of 2018
The last few years have been all about the neutral Farmhouse look. Whites, creams, grays, and the newly coined “greige” have ruled strong. But in the last year or so, slowly the colorful Boho style has been popping up more and more in my client requests. This style has color, pattern, and a global flair to it.
In 2018 COLOR is going to make a huge come back!
Bright, powerful, patterned, colorful rooms are going to be popping up this year. Which is why I was so excited to work on this Living Room project. We combined rustic, modern, AND boho all into one Living Room design, but it had to have loads of color. In fact she requested a PINK RUG (how fun is that?)
Version #2 started with a modern leather sofa piled on with bright, patterned pillows. A bright pink velvet pillow pulls in the pink from her rug, but other neutral colors like this navy blue lumbar pillow and white fringe pillow give the eye a place to rest.
Gold Accents in a Boho Living Room
As you probably know, gold and brass are having a hey day right now! I added in some geometric pieces like this marble and gold hex side table and geometric, modern coffee table. Adding in some global elements like these woven basket with snake plants, mexican bowls, and otomi fabric add a fun flair to this Texas Living Room. Plus I told you all about the otomi pattern in my last blog post. This colorful Mexican fabric is SO much fun, and this was the first time I ever got to use it in a client design.
Have fun with it!
My client also wanted a whimsical, personal look to her Living Room. I loved that! Adding in fun elements like this hand chair, black crystal lamps, and this sweet little llama were all fun little touches that bring a smile to your face.
Making Boho Design Go Modern
Her beautiful Living Room already had a lot of rustic touches (like an antler chandelier, limestone fireplace, and rustic floors), so she wanted to focus on bringing in some more modern elements to it.
Bringing in clear acrylic is always a good way to bring some modern to a room! This clear acrylic tray for her coffee table and clear acrylic side tables (on wheels no less) make the room feel airy and sleek.
A second 2018 Design Trend Prediction
Another design trend you are going to continue to see is:
NAVY
This color actually works as a neutral, but also gives a room some depth. It is a rich color that can work with just about any design style. She had beautiful custom window seats, so I gave her some suggestions to add navy global fabrics as a cushion for her seats. P.S. I’m thrilled about navy sticking around as it is my FAVORITE color to design with!
Modern Rustic Boho Living Room Reveal
I know…how can you have a room that has all three of these things: Modern, Rustic, AND Boho? Some of them seem contradictory even. Let’s check it out! Here was her Living Room before:
And after creating two different custom designs, here is the 3D rendering of her new space:
It its bright, bold and fun. But because of the repeating patterns and colors, it prevents it from being too busy feeling:
Bring Color into Your Living Room Design
A pink rug might be too much for you. But you can still add color to your space! I always recommend using neutral pieces of furniture (such as the leather sofas and navy accent chairs). These large furniture pieces are expensive and hard to change out. But adding in color in texture with inexpensive items such as pillows, artwork, and decor is the perfect way to experiment.
I would suggest starting off with no more than three colors to introduce to your room. Then find ways to repeat these colors throughout your space to pull everything together. Pull a color out of your rug when looking for throw pillows. Or use artwork that encompasses these colors.
But also mix in some more neutral pieces to keep the room from feeling cluttered. But most importantly…have fun with it!
