OMG. Big deep breath, this is my favorite/most stressful time of the whole year. It’s like Christmas if you are an interior designer. It is officially One Room Challenge time! This biannual Design Challenge is the brainchild of Linda at Calling It Home, and I am going to makeover a room in my own house in just six short weeks. An amazing thing because normally I am so busy designing my client’s rooms that I don’t ever get around to my “To Do” list in my own home. It’s also my busiest time of year: it s the start of school for my three kids, we have four family birthdays this month, my husband is out of town on business, and oh yah-I’m tearing apart a room and putting it back together in a few weeks. Eek!
But if this is your first time here, I’m not usually stressing out over here. My name is Kristin, I’m a wife, mama of three, and I’ve been an interior designer for about 14 years now! You can usually find me working barefoot with a messy bun in my house, designing client projects all over the country via Interior E-Design. That is because my company, Postbox Designs ONLY does Online Interior Design. And let me tell you why that rocks. I get to know my clients, their tastes, style, and budgets, then I virtually custom design their room for them. After designing their space, I package up all of their drawings, shopping lists, instructions, and material samples into their room-inside-a-box and send it right to their doorstep. They have everything they need to pull together their room on THEIR time and budget. They don’t have to take time off work or find a sitter just to run around town for hours with me. Instead, I do all of the hard work, and they get to live their life.
In fact, one client told me “You’re like Stitch Fix for Interior Design!” Yes, friend, that pretty much nails it.
We’re Getting Personal: A Peek Into My Own Home
You will usually see me sharing my wonderful client’s projects with you on the blog. But for the next six week’s I’m going to be making over a project in my very own home! I mentioned before, I’m a Mom of three sweet kiddos: 11, 9, and 7. And this One Room Challenge I’m taking of my seven year old daughter’s bedroom. In fact it is perfect timing because she turned 7 on Monday. Which means this “big girl” room is part of her birthday present.
And let me tell you all about this spunky little thing. Adelyn is seven-she is fierce, wild, brilliant, and won’t let anything hold her down. She wears those outfits out in public that you almost want to email the teacher and warn her. But alas, she is my third kid and not a lot will get me that ruffled. So she goes along life, marching to her own drum. Last month I shared this photo of her on Instagram, if this doesn’t sum her up, I don’t know what does.
But girlfriend needs a new room, because she is finally get her OWN big girl room! Her big sis and she have been sharing a room since she was a baby, and we are finally going to separate them (although she has already made plans to have lots of sleepovers in big sister’s room). She requested a Unicorn and Horse themed bedroom makeover, which I was happy to oblige. However, she is seven now (I know, total big girl status), so I wanted a fun and charming space but one that she could grow into over the next few years as well. So I put a plan together and Miss A approved it…so One Room Challenge Week #1, here we go!
Her Existing Bedroom
When we moved into our house nearly five years ago, Adelyn and her big sis were sharing a bedroom. So I created this space with matching bedding and a pink and aqua theme. But now that big sis is moving out, we are going in a whole new direction.
Gorgeous Girl Bedroom Design Inspirations
You always got to start with an inspiration. I went straight to my very own Girl’s Bedroom Design Pinterest Board and found images of rooms that I loved.
I loved the whimsical charm of this room and that sweet giraffe photo:
I loved the pale walls with bright pops of bubble gum colors on the wall with this one from Young House Love:

LayBabyLay can do no wrong. Seriously, she is my decor muse! She is a genius at pulling together charming kid spaces with some boho charm to them, like her own daughter’s room:

I loved the look of this white spindle bed (I got a similar one for my daughter’s room), and the pale pink, aqua, and white color scheme:
After I saw several pink velvet sofas floating around on my Pinterest board, I knew I had to include one! I loved this pink sofa in her daughter’s Playroom, by A Beautiful Mess:
Operation: Girl Bedroom Makeover…What’s The Plan?
Just like with all of my Interior E-Design clients, I always start with a Design Mood Board. I choose all of the items for the room, and when you put them all together on one or two pages, you can start to see the room start to take shape. Who knows, I might swap out an item or two as One Room Challenge goes along, but this is the design for my daughter’s bedroom makeover:
I’m starting with a white spindle bed that will be fluffed up with Pottery Barn Kids bedding (#17) and some fun and whimsical throw pillows (#18, 21, and 23). Mr. Alpaca with Bubble Gum (#22) will be smiling down at her over her bed. This sweet scalloped metal table (#7) will hold her french bulldog table lamp (#5) and some fun unicorn accessories. Throughout the space I chose some sweet and charming artwork from some of my favorite Etsy shops (#1, 2, 4, 6, and 14) such as pink fairy flow and dreamy unicorn prints. But she is most excited about this pink velvet sofa (#12), that doubles up as a guest bed, that will be filled with Crate and Kids pillows (#16 and #26). I’m hoping everything will have a fun vibe to it…just like my little girl.

And I wanted to say a big old THANK-YOU to all of the sponsors that helped me make this room come together. These are all companies that I use for both myself AND my interior design clients, so I was thrilled to use their products in my daughter’s bedroom. You are going to see more about all of their pieces I used as the One Room Challenge goes on.

Tune in for Week #2:
Be sure to check back next week when I start digging into the actual bedroom makeover! I was inspired by this gorgeous Anthropologie chandelier (#9), but didn’t want to pay $300 for it. So instead I figured out a way to create my own version for a mere $68. I’m going to create my DIY light fixture version, and share the entire tutorial with you. Plus I’m sharing some perfect girl color palettes-and the final one I chose for my little girl’s bedroom decor.
Please be sure to check out all of the other participants in this year’s One Room Challenge.…their creativity is going to blow you away!
Cheers,
Kristin
