Welcome to Day 2 of the Postbox Designs 30 Day Challenge! If you missed the first day, for the next 30 Days you get to soak in some easy-peasy home design tips and mini makeover projects. These are meant to be simple and no stress. Over the next month together we will work through every room of your home… Are you ready?
Today is special to my heart. I love mudrooms, like adore them. I think I could even sleep on the floor of my mudroom, that is how much I love that space. I love how functional they are, and how much easier they make my life as a busy mama of three. No mudroom? Create a “mini mudroom”! This could be done in your garage, laundry room, hallway, or front closet!
The key to keeping your space organized is breaking the #1 rule you learn in preschool. NO SHARING!
Give every family member (even including the four legged ones) their own set of everything. It is also an easy way to figure out who isn’t hanging up their coats!
- Start by choosing a basket/bin for each family member. For fun, you can label each one with a number or the person’s monogram. These baskets are great for hats/mittens in the winter and sunscreen/bug sprays in the summer.
- Add a shelf wide enough to hold all of the baskets.
- Add a hook for each person. I love these hooks because they are already labeled! Either choose multiple prong hooks, or if you are going to choose single hooks like this: try two rows. One row of hooks for coats and one row for backpacks. I promise you: if it doesn’t have a hook, it will end up on the floor! (Tip: Make sure you hang the hooks low enough where the littlest members of your family can reach!)
- Add some beadboard! Beadboard is totally inexpensive, easy to install, and instantly glams up the space. Plus, it is much easier to wipe down than drywall. Remember the “mud” part of the “mudroom”!
- Add a basket for each person on the floor. These baskets are to corral the shoes that seem to multiply by the day. I like wire ones so that dirt and melting snow drip right through. (If your area has a finished floor, add a tray under the baskets).
- Add a floor mat. It’s a great way to add color and pattern to the space. It is also that one last ditch effort to keep the mud back in the mudroom instead of your just-washed kitchen floors.
Make this as fancy or as plain as you want! I know a family who simply built a couple of shelves from 2x4s for shoes and added some hooks for coats/backpacks in their garage. It wasn’t the fanciest, but it sure did the job! And they spent a mere $30…that is worth the price of not tripping over shoes on the way inside, right?
Maybe you have an actual mudroom or laundry room that needs some help. Did you know Postbox Designs offers a special Finishes Only Package? With this special package, I help you select all of your fixtures and finishes for your new room (faucets, sink, tile, flooring, paint, oh my!). It IS as fun as it sounds!
