I think we have all been in the spot where we are using a set of furniture that no longer reflects our style. What used to work no longer jives with our lifestyle. I recently helped this client with a Postbox Designs Room Makeover, and she wanted to re-boot her Traditional Dining Room to a Modern Dining Room. Yah baby!
This was the Dining Room Before:
While all of her furniture was in fine shape, it didn’t fit her style at all. This client loves a Modern Boho Chic look, which wasn’t showing up at all in her very traditional, ornate furniture. She also wanted to change out her carpet to hardwood flooring, and create a more cohesive flow with a more neutral wall color.
So I went to work to create a more modern look with pops of warm woods and metals, and some global touches-a hallmark of the Modern Boho Chic style.
This is Version #1 of the Mood Board I created for her (I always create two versions that are designed to mix and match for even more options!)
As a Bonus check out Version #2 at the end of this article to see the entirely different look created for this room!
I like sharing this example because this is one of the cases where the client took the essence of the Mood Board I created and subbed in some of her own items and choices. After she got her Postbox we walked through the process together and emailed me some different selections and we talked about what worked and what didn’t:
And here is the original 3D Perspective I created for this Modern Dining Room:
And here is her newly updated Modern Dining Room! This new Dining Room is neutral, streamlined and modern without being cold (and if you like the adjacent Boho Chic Sitting Room, check out how we made over that room HERE!):
With a Dining Room, the first change is always the table! My client requested something modern and that was extendable so she could convert her Dining Room from her standard family of four to party status! This walnut hued beauty fit the bill-the scale works great for the room, but since she has the open floor plan, she can extend it when entertaining.
Her other wish list item was these dreamy Wishbone chairs! They can run as much as $1200 a piece (yipes!), but I was able to find a beautiful replica for around $200 each-a much more budget friendly version! If you love this look, these Wishbone chairs come in a variety of different colors and finishes and pair up beautifully with a lot of different styles.
One tricky element of this space was it was tight in it’s room depth. My client needed some sort of storage area in this room, but it had to be a skinny piece to work with the floor plan. This sleek console table gives extra storage (with two drawers and a lower shelf) plus gives her extra surface area for drinks or appetizers.
Her existing room didn’t have any ceiling lights, but a fabulous chandelier is a Must-Have in a Dining Room! This modern three pendant light fixture brings a beautiful focal point to the space.
Another add-on to this Modern Dining Room was a new rug. Rugs are always a tricky item to add to a Dining Room! Design-wise a rug grounds the space and helps define the area. But practically (especially when you have children, like this client), rugs can get dirty when food gets dropped onto it. So what’s a girl to do? This rug is the perfect fit-the herringbone pattern and dark colors are busy enough to hide any stains, but is also completely beautiful!
So how do you style a beautiful modern style Dining Room? This rattan chargers add a global inspired element (which works with her Boho Chic style-see her Sitting Room Makeover HERE!) that ties it in with the adjacent room. Dishware can be gorgeous AND affordable. These square plates, gold silverware, and beautiful hand-painted gold bowls are all Target finds. A pop of gold is always a win!
And now for the easiest-breeziest One Minute Centerpiece!
Succulents are the perfect choice for any modern style room-they are simple and add a pop of greenery to your space. This trio of glazed potted faux succulents (no watering needed!) is all you need for a modern Dining Room centerpiece. And best news…another Target find!
Before, her Dining Room space didn’t work for her family’s lifestyle. Not only was her furniture not reflective of her love of modern, but the function of her rooms didn’t work. Before the adjacent room was never used. But with having an open floor plan where these two rooms flowed into each other gave us the perfect chance to fix that. We re-worked her adjacent formal Living Room into a casual Sitting Room with Home Bar. Now this area serves as an overflow area where guests can sit comfortably with appetizers before dinner or drinks afterwards. Everyone can remain together in the same space, but break away for smaller group conversations.
If you want more ideas on how to create a Boho Chic room, check it out HERE! So while her Dining Room is more on the neutral, modern side, the warm woods, global patterns (like the rug) and pops of gold all flow with her adjacent, more brightly colored room.
When you are designing a new room, be sure to think about the rooms around it, so that your entire house will flow together!
And as a fun BONUS, here is a peek at Version #2 of this same Modern Dining Room. This version keeps all of the same elements but adds in a great gold West Elm light fixture, modern white chairs, a deep navy graphic rug, and a chunky streamlined rustic table.
