Back Patio Design Makeover Version #1
Spring has finally sprung! I know in some areas this warm weather is nothing too new…but I live in Michigan. Three weeks ago my kids had a SNOW DAY, and now it is finally hanging out in the 70 degree range. Which means it is finally safe to sweep off that back patio and pull out our patio furniture.
But maybe you are like me and your patio furniture is looking a little tired. Whether you need to start from scratch for your back patio decor, or just update with a few pieces, read on my friend!
If you have the room, it is always nice to break up your patio or deck into a couple of areas. One area might be a dining table, another area has soft seating, and another area for grilling, serving, or even a bar area. Today I’m sharing a real Postbox Project for a client in Colorado. Due to the harsh conditions that Colorado can bring, my client wanted very durable, kid-friendly items that would work well staying outdoors. Here is Version #1:
Items to Create a Patio Makeover
This rustic style farmhouse patio dining table is paired up with white metal farmhouse chairs-both will hold up beautifully to the outdoors. Her table also comes with a coordinating bench that will work great for her kids. And for her back patio I recommended this sectional sofa for some soft seating, pairing it with an outdoor rug and neutral striped outdoor pillows. And as a special touch, she can order a lumbar pillow with a custom number on it-it can be their address, zip code, marriage year-anything that makes it their own.
Plants always work well to update your patio or deck design. In this case we added a wall hung herb garden and tall planters. These tall planters would work well flanking a front door, or even creating privacy between outdoor seating areas. And finally these wooden farmhouse window boxes allow her to add some pops of color with flowers to her windows.
Since this project is a new build, I also helped my client select a mix of bronze and iron lighting fixtures. To avoid a matchy-matchy look, don’t stick with the exact same style of lighting throughout. Instead, stick with a consistent color palette and a similar look. All of her light fixtures have a modern farmhouse look in a dark finish.
Back Patio Design Makeover Version #2
If you are familiar with how Postbox Designs works, I always create TWO mix-and-match versions of all of my client’s spaces. After I send my client their first design, I get their feedback and thoughts to create a second version. Both versions can mix and match so they have lots of different options.
While my client loved the first patio design, she wanted to see a design with some pops of color and a different style of table. In this version I started with this Pottery Barn outdoor dining room patio set and paired it up with these metal bistro chairs that are formulated for outdoor use. I kept a sectional sofa with a dark gray upholstery to help hide dirt and stains, but added in these bright blue pillows. An outdoor striped rug and white outdoor pillows lighten the look of the dark gray sofa.
And just like in the first version, I selected a new set of outdoor rated dark bronze light fixtures. We used a mix of hanging fixtures, wall mounted light fixtures, and bronze outdoor fans for their patio. And finally…since they are building their new custom home, I felt this door mat would be the perfect touch to welcome guests to their house.

And here they are-two different patio designs! Both give my client a ton of seating, lighting, and places to eat and talk with friends.
