Rustic Farmhouse Living Room Makeover
Hi friends, welcome to Postbox Designs!Today I’m really excited to share a recent makeover of a rustic Farmhouse Living Room. My client was relocating across the country to Florida where he bought a new home. Before he even moved in, I helped him design his Living Room, Kitchen, Breakfast Room, and Dining Room-all in the Farmhouse styles. So by the time he moved in, he already had plans for his main rooms-pretty darn smart! I love working on multiple rooms at the same time for my clients because all of the spaces will flow with the same look. In fact, I even offer a discount to all of my Postbox Designs clients when they purchase three rooms or more at once. P.S. You can check out all of my Room Packages and my multiple room discounts if you are interested.
Like many of my clients, he had a few main pieces (his sofa, coffee table, and leather chair) that he wanted incorporated into his space. After getting to know him, his style, and budget, I finished off the room with accessories, furniture, lighting, rugs, and more so his Living Room would reflect his rustic Farmhouse style.
Farmhouse Living Room Design: Version #1
If you also love the Farmhouse Living Room look, a great way to mix and match furniture pieces is to use a combination of stained, rustic woods: like this media console (item #6) and console table (item #2), and mix it with metal pieces such as this coffee table (item #12) and side table (item #3). The metal pieces give an almost industrial look that works great with the more rustic farmhouse wood pieces. Then my client also liked the color blue, so I found farmhouse pillows with a a blue, gray, and white theme, while mixing up the patterns. When mixing pillows, a good rule of thumb is:
1 Solid + 1 Large Print + 1 Small Print
That way your pillows all coordinate instead of looking too matchy-matchy!
Farmhouse Living Room Decor Accessories
Once you have all of your main Living Room pieces, it is all of the decor items that really pull the room together. For his coffee table, I started with this metal tray (item #13) where he could corral some farmhouse style vases from places like Magnolia, Pier One, and West Elm. All of his decor pieces keep a rustic farmhouse look with materials such as concrete, metal, and rustic pottery. And to add some greenery to the room (since he is in Florida after all) a fiddle fig is the classic farmhouse plant. I love the one from World Market (item #16). To finish off the space, I suggested this propeller oversized wall art (#19) and rustic farmhouse ceiling fan (#25).
Farmhouse Living Room Design: Version #2
When I started doing interior E-design, I realized that even with nearly 13 years of interior design experience, it would be nearly impossible to nail my client’s dream room in the first design. So I created a unique process with Postbox Designs that has seemed to work beautifully with my clients. First, I get to know their style and budget through their Welcome Packet of homework I give them. Then I create their first design (as you could see above). After completion, I send the design to them, and get their feedback and thoughts. Finally, I create their second design based off their feedback. But the best part is:
Both custom designs are made to mix and match.
I purposefully design them so that my clients could go with either design OR mix-and-match their favorite elements from each for a completely unique design.
So for Version #2 of this Farmhouse Living Room I kept in my client’s favorite elements but swapped in some changes:
Rustic Farmhouse Living Room Design: Take II
In this version, I kept Items 1-4, but added in all new farmhouse style pillows. This time I went with a classic navy and white palette. Then I added in all new Farmhouse decor accessories such as these galvanized vases (item #8), rustic dough bowl (Item #5), and faux olive branch greenery (item #7).

This Living Room design also shows a geometric navy rug (#14) and lighter wood media console (#15). Since my client has a very open floor plan, I suggested he use these rustic curtain rods from Target (item #16) with simple white curtains paired up with woven roller shades (item #23) throughout most of his main floor. My two favorite places to snag white cotton sailcloth style curtains are from Target and Pottery Barn-depending on your budget. I have the white Target curtains throughout 9o% of my house, and love their simple, airy look.
Finally, a slew of Target accessories from their Magnolia line finish off the room (items #17, #19, and #20). But my favorite part of this entire Living Room is this chalkboard style print (item #22)-my client is a fabulous baker and this Living Room opens up to his kitchen. So this modern print shows a bit of his personality in his new home.
A Farmhouse Living Room Design Come to Life
My favorite drawing in any Postbox is when my client chooses to include a 3D rendering of their space. I love this drawing because it can show my clients what their entire room will look like before ordering a single item. While I include Mood Boards and Floor Plans in ALL of my Room Packages, this 3D rendering is able to give details you can’t get in any other way. And I loved how his rustic farmhouse style Living Room project turned out! This is a 3D rendering of his Living Room version #2:
For an architectural feature, we decided to include board and batten walls that went 3/4 up his wall height. And I also included a peek into his breakfast area as part of the Living Room design since these two rooms are connected. Especially when you are trying to work on multiple rooms at once, it can be difficult for my clients to design rooms that also coordinate with the adjacent rooms. Which is why it is SO great when I am able to work with my Postbox Designs clients on multiple rooms at once. I’ll be sharing the designs of his adjacent Kitchen, Breakfast Nook, and Dining Room in future posts…so watch for those!
And here is another shot of his Version #2 Living Room, showing his 3D rendering as well:
Working with Postbox Designs On your Home
Recently I have been working more and more with clients on multiple rooms at once. Typically it is when they are building a new house, or moving into a brand new home. It can be completely overwhelming and time consuming to try to do it on your own. Instead, I work with my clients one room at a time (usually starting with their main living space such as a Living Room or Family Room). Then once we nail their perfect dream room, we work room-by-room on their adjacent spaces. At the end, they have a home where every room flows and works with the others, while each room still keeps their own personality.
I recently worked with a client who just finished building their dream house. By the end she was completely overwhelmed and tired from all of the decision making. But she still had to furnish her empty rooms, so I’m so glad she found Postbox Designs. Here is what she had to say after we completed her room:
“Wow!! Thanks Kristin! You knocked it out of the park! After such a frustrating building experience you have been such a breath of fresh air. I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate they way you listened and put together such a beautiful space. You have a gift! “
Guys, that made me want to cry! I love it when I can take your vision and turn it into a beautiful room you get to enjoy and live your life in for years to come. If you are interested in working with me, and have multiple rooms to work on, I offer a 10% discount off the total when you purchase 3 rooms or more at once. You can choose from ANY Room Package to get this discount. You can check out all of my Room Packages here to see what Package fits your needs best.
