Create a Timeless Boy’s Bedroom Design
Hi friends! I am beyond excited to share this project with you today! I recently just wrapped up a whole house project with an amazing client who was building her dream home. She used Postbox Designs to help her design and decorate nearly every single room in her new house. Each room of her new home has a custom design including the Floor Plan layout, Mood Boards, step-by-step instructions of how to pull it all together, and a Shopping List, so she can simply click and buy. So instead of being stressed and overwhelmed with moving in, this smart Mama can just work her plan. She isn’t making quick decisions she will later regret, she had it pre-planned. I have shared many of the other rooms in her home, but today I’m sharing the FINAL project we worked on together…her shared boy’s bedroom.
I have an eight year old son of my own so I know how tricky it can be to design a bedroom that will grow up with him (you can check out his bedroom below). You want something fun and kid friendly, but also a bedroom design that is timeless (so you don’t have to spend money and time re-doing it in two years!).
Today I’m going to show you two different ways you can create a timeless look for your boy’s bedroom design, that can grow up with him!
Boy Bedroom Design Version #1: Preppy Red, White, and Blue
With Postbox Designs I always create TWO mix-and-match design versions for every room I work on. For the first version of this shared boy’s bedroom, we went with a preppy decor with a classic red, white, and blue scheme. This color combination is timeless, fresh, and fun. It also works well if you need a gender neutral space for a Playroom or boy/girl shared bedroom. You can also throw in pops of aqua or pink to further enhance this color palette!
Boy Bedroom Bedding & Decor
For this version, we hit up Pottery Barn Kids for these classic blue gingham sheets (#2) and reversible blue/white quilts (#4). Adding these preppy red dot pillows adds a graphic punch, and she can customize each boy’s bed with these custom silhouette prints (#11). When using bunk beds in a child’s bedroom I love using simple bedding that makes it easy to make the beds! Additionally, anytime I design a bedroom with bunk beds, I always add lighting and a shelf (#13) at each bed. That way each child can store their must-haves close by or even read quietly without disturbing the other. In this bedroom, these galvanized nautical sconces (#3) will be a durable choice for young boys. (P.S. I would stay away from glass or easily breakable lights in this area when dealing with young kids)
Another classic pattern in a child’s bedroom is stripes-they never go out of style, work in just about any design style, and go with everything. My hubby will tell you I have an impossible-to-cure obsession with the horizontal stripe…but for good reason! Stripes don’t date themselves, and they work with everything! The simple Pottery Barn kids shades (#7) and navy and white striped rug (#12) fit this timeless theme. When using wood floors in a child’s bedroom, I like to add in a soft rug for a play area.
The best part about the wall art in this bedroom design? The artwork is FREE.
I am in love with this set of free vintage airplane printables from “Simply Made by Rebecca”. I suggested hanging them in a grid pattern Gallery Wall as a focal point on the blank bedroom wall. Love them too?

Storage Solutions for a Boy’s Bedroom
My client also requested a rustic iron and wood style shelving unit. They are going to build a custom one, but you can also have one created for you, such as this one from Homemade Modern. These will work for toy and book storage, and we added the rug (#12) and these red beanbag chairs (#18) right next to it to create a reading nook. When using open shelves I strongly suggest having some closed storage such as these baskets (#17) and bins (#10) to minimize clutter!
Boy Bedroom Design Version #2: An Adventure Bedroom
For the second shared boy bedroom design, my client wanted to keep the fresh red, white, and blue theme but see something a little different. So while this bedroom is still preppy and vibrant, I layered on an “adventure” theme to it….perfect for two growing boys.
In fact, adjacent to this room is their newly designed Playroom that I shared with you last week. You can click below to see all of the details, but it has a similar color palette and theme so the two rooms would work well together:

Boy Bedroom Decor: Bedding and Wall Art Ideas
Remember how I promised to show you a classic, timeless boy’s bedroom design? I kept that classic pattern of stripes going in this second bedroom design with navy and white striped sheets (#2), the same Pottery Barn Kids quilt (#4) and a red and white buffalo check pillow (#3). My clients are going to build a custom bunk bed similar to this design from her Pinterest page (#1) and I think this bedding will grow with the boys. I suggested adding in these Ikea hack mini shelves (#9) to each bed, along with these nautical inspired sconces (#8). Again, these sconces are going to be durable and hard to break, which I think of as a safety feature in a child’s bedroom design.
Wall Art for a Boy’s Bedroom
We brought in some of the adventure themed decor items with these plane prints (#6), a decorative plane propeller (#12) and these map inspired pillows (#10). None of them are over the top “theme-y” pieces, but just little nods at this bedroom’s theme. By keeping a loose theme that works well as both toddlers and school aged kids, it will help keep this boy’s bedroom decor timeless.
A few more ways we added in the “adventure” them is by some of the wall art such as this “Never Stop Exploring” print (#14), the chalkboard style USA map (#17), framed prints of the boys (#13), this inexpensive globe (#19), and this paper airplane print (#20). All of these wall decor pieces are super fun, a bit cheeky, and work with our Adventure Bedroom design, without being too much.
So there you go! A fun, fresh boy bedroom design that is going to stand the test of time. This bedroom design is going to last her boys for a very long time. And a huge thank-you to my client for not only letting me pair up with her for an amazing project, but allowing me to share it with you all!
