My 5 Favorite Bedroom Decor Items
Hi Friends, welcome back to Postbox Designs…if this is your first time here, I’m Kristin! Wife, Mom of three and I started Postbox Designs so that my clients could work with me around THEIR schedule and budget. All I do here is Interior E-Design. After I custom design my clients rooms, I package up their room-inside-a-box and mail it to their doorstep. Inside they have all of the drawings, shopping lists, instructions, and material samples to pull their room together.
They can order their entire room in an hour…in their PJs.
Yup, that is ONLY something a Mom could come up with! And if you saw me running around my house in the morning getting my three kids ready for school, you would know why doing things in my PJs has become a common place event around here! And speaking of PJs, today I’m really excited to share a recent Master Bedroom makeover project. Normally I’m sharing client projects from all around the country, but this one is in my very own hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan. This busy working Mom had recently moved into a new house with her family (that they remodeled top-to-bottom), but now needed her rooms designed so it felt like home. Since she works full time, she didn’t have the time (or the desire) to try to furnish her new house top-to-bottom, so that is when she gave me a call. She chose my Multi Room Package and I helped her with three rooms at once, so that her home would flow together. Today, not only do I want to share BOTH designs of their new Master Bedroom makeover, but also my Top 5 Favorite Bedroom Decor Items for any bedroom I design.
So here we go…
Bedroom Design #1: Neutral and Glam Bedroom Decor
My client wanted a serene and peaceful Master Bedroom full of neutral colors like grays, creams, and wood tones. She had a couple of requests she wanted incorporated into her room: she loved mirrored side tables, wanted wallpaper, and an upholstered headboard. So I started with a dark upholstered headboard (#1), layered on soft gray Pottery Barn bedding (#15) with crisp white sheets (#8) , with gold and white throw pillows (#4) and a gray velvet lumbar pillow (#10). We played a lot with textures and subtle patterns to keep her bedroom feeling peaceful.
Mirrored nightstands (#6) flanked both sides of her bed with a matching pair of white lamps (#11) and octagonal mirrors (#2) over each table. And as she requested, the back wall behind her bed features this subtle gray and white wallpaper (#13).
Favorite Bedroom Decor Item #1: Nightstands with Drawers
When is the last time you heard someone say “Oh, I have enough storage, thank-you very much.”?! Nightstands with drawers give you the perfect spot to stash small items like a book, glasses, the TV remote, etc. so you can keep those nightstands cleared off, and your bedroom de-cluttered. I love these wood and mirrored ones from Pottery Barn, and the polished look they give her bedroom. For me, on top of every nightstand I always put a bedside table lamp as well. Not only is it practical, but it helps balance out the room.
Favorite Bedroom Decor Item #2: A Bench
I added this soft velvet bench (#14) at the end of her bed. I know this sounds weird-but sometimes the ends of our beds look a little funny…almost unfinished. Adding a bench at the end of your bed is a perfect little way to finish it off. Plus, I think they are so uber-practical. I have one at the end of our bed and I use it every day…to sit down to put on my shoes, my kids perch on it to watch TV in our room (why is that always more fun for them to watch it in OUR room?), and I plop down laundry baskets when I’m putting clothes away. Another great spot for a bench is under an empty window…instant reading nook.
Favorite Bedroom Decor Item #3: Artwork or a Mirror Above the Nightstands
A lot of my clients might have the main furniture pieces to their bedroom, but come to me for those final decor touches to make the room feel finished and polished. Adding artwork over your nightstands is a way to help add some layers to your room. I love this inspirational photo (#18) that shows off that exact look. In this case I found mirror options for her to hang over her nightstands (Item #2).
And here’s a hint: Only hang your art or mirror 2-3″ above your nightstand.
Most people hang items too high, but keeping it low works better. Then layer on a table lamp (#11) and 1-2 decorative pieces such as this alarm clock (#17) and vase (#7). You want a few items without cluttering your space.
Bedroom Design #2: Moody and Glam Bedroom Decor
For the second version of her Master Bedroom Makeover, we went a bit more dark and glam, with stained wood furniture and more pops of gold. We kept the gray, white, and wood-tone color scheme, but went a bit more moody with it.
We kept the same headboard (#1), and used these carved wood and mirrored nightstands (#3) with a classic gourd lamp (#2) on top. Gray bedding (#12) and solid, but textured throw pillows (#5 and 10) added some layers to her bedding. This glam gold and crystal light fixture (#4) pulls in the other gold accents in her room, like her sconces (#6) and round mirrors (#11). And I fell hard for these dreamy watercolor agate prints (#8) to hang right above her bed.
Favorite Bedroom Decor Item #4: Upholstered Headboards
I’m a sucker for them. They are beautiful, comfortable, and surprisingly affordable. While you can get an entire upholstered bed frame as well, if you stick with just a headboard (which is really all you need), you snag one for as little as a few hundred dollars. I love ones with details such as tufting, nailheads, or a wingback style.
In fact, I even created a $300 & Under Headboard Round-Up of some of my favorites-and lots of upholstered headboards are included. You can find it hanging out in my FREE RESOURCE LIBRARY
Favorite Bedroom Decor Item #5: White Bedding
Ahh, the all-white bed-it just brings on the feeling of a lux hotel to me. And I’m a huge fan of it-in fact, my bedding at home is all white, from my sheets to my duvet. I love the simplicity of it, the fact I can bleach it, and the light and airy feeling it brings to our bedroom. In this bedroom, my client requested some gray in her bedding, but we still paired it up with crisp white sheets (#9).
And even white bedding needs a pop of color, so you can layer on some accent pillows to bring in the color you want.
We finished off her room with some simple nightstand decor (#13, 14, 17, and 18). Instead of one large bench at the end of her bed, in this case, I showed her a pair of smaller x-benches (#20). And in this Master Bedroom design we went with darker, stained furniture: I gave her the option of a long dresser (#22) or taller version (#23). And simple white cotton curtains (#19) kept the room from getting too dark.
So here you go, a darker, slightly more moody and romantic version of her Master Bedroom. Which one is she going to choose? Choices, choices!
