Modern Farmhouse Bedroom, Living Room & Dining Room Makeover
Hi Friends, Welcome to Postbox Designs, where all I do is Interior E-Design. If we haven’t met yet, I’m Kristin-wife, Mom to three crazy kids (and a Labradoodle named Jasper), and my kryptonite is Rice Krispie Treats. I could skip lunch to stuff my face with those things (and often do!) And around here I’m doing Real Designs for Real Life. If you are into “look-but-don’t-touch” rooms, this isn’t the place for you. But if want a beautiful home that also works for real life (and your real children, real pets, or real spouse), then read on!
And today I’m really excited to share this Real Postbox Project with you-this Mama reached out to me to help her finish off three different rooms in her home. While she had some main furniture pieces, she needed some help pulling together her rooms for a polished, finished look. Furthermore, she had a beautiful open floor plan so she wanted her rooms to flow and feel consistent throughout her home. Lucky for me, she had fabulous taste and just needed someone to show her a plan she could implement. I had a blast working with her, and she graciously gave me permission to share her project with you, so you could get some design inspiration. You can get the same type of design for your own house with my Starter Room Package.
P.S. And if you are looking for some free Farmhouse Design Ideas, be sure to read to the bottom of the post where I’m sharing some with you today!
Modern Farmhouse Bedroom Design
While we worked on three rooms in her house together, one of them was their Guest Bedroom. She wanted a simple neutral bedroom design with a Modern Farmhouse flair. We started with an upholstered headboard full of plush neutral bedding (#13) and some modern patterned throw pillows (#8 and #10). I think the simplest pillow arrangement on any bed (that is a queen or larger) is to add (2) 18″x18″ decorative pillows and (1) lumbar pillow in front. It is enough to give some layers of design and interest, without creating 80 pillows you have to put back every day! These modern white night stands are from Target (#16) and so are these modern brass table lamps (#15). A modern but rustic dresser (#3) gets dressed up with this gallery wall of simple botanical prints from Etsy (#5) and two modern-and-glam table lamps (#7). If you like a Farmhouse look but don’t want to go too rustic and country, be sure to add in some sleek, modern elements like this to balance out your look.
We added in some more layers of texture and design with this inexpensive subtle area rug (#2), juju hat centered over the bed (#6) and simple white cotton Pottery Barn curtains (#4). While all three of these are neutral elements, their pattern and texture gave a lot of life to the room! I like to add 1-2 things on top of a night stand to add some decor but without adding accessories just for the sake of adding them. I loved this wood pot from Magnolia (#11) and this metal alarm clock (#12), which is also practical.
But I also always include a round of revisions with all of my designs!
I have found that it is a lot easier to give feedback when you are looking at a specific design rather than trying to figure out what you want in the first place.
So I also gave my sweet client some alternative options with this Pottery Barn basket as a wall hanging (#1), and a different combo of throw pillows (#2 and #3). A neutral but textured rug (#9) and different modern nightstands from Target (#6) also keep a modern but neutral Modern Farmhouse Bedroom look. A modern brass and marble table lamp (#5) brings some glam to the bedroom.
The best part is both designs are made to mix-and-match so she can choose all of her favorite items for her new bedroom.

But we also tackled her Living Room to create a neutral and polished look that mixed in some modern sleek elements with some more traditional pieces. I love starting with a neutral sofa with straight lines-it goes with every style and is always a classic piece. This Pottery Barn sofa (#1) is styled up with geometric pillows form Target (#2) and is paired up with these gorgeous wood cushioned armchairs, also from Pottery Barn (#5). Both my client and I fell hard for this marble and wood round coffee table (#6) from Pottery Barn that bridges the gap between polished traditional and a Farmhouse look. This neutral sisal rug (#4), woven shades (#3), and turned wood lamps (#12) add neutral texture to the room.
We added in some simple accessories such as this bird (#7), rustic tray (#13) and olive tree topiary (#10) create a simple vignette for her coffee table. Rustic metal side tables (#11) and a fiddle fig tree (#15) round of the room’s decor!
Modern Farmhouse Dining Room Design
When you have an open Floor Plan in your home you want to be careful you don’t make each area look too busy. Since her Dining Room, Family Room, and Kitchen were all open to each other, we wanted each room to flow and coordinate but also be streamlined, so it didn’t look too cluttered. So while we created a Gallery Wall with multiple prints in her Family Room (not shown), I wanted to keep it simple in her adjacent Dining Room.
We started with this beautiful Pottery Barn dining room table (#1). Then the focal point on her walls was this oversized modern botanical print (#8). Similar to this inspirational photo (#7), this print can take up the majority of her blank wall in one simple statement piece of art. Then we filled in another wall with this farmhouse basket (#4), farmhouse sign (#5) and Pottery Barn succulent wall art (#6).
How to Create a Modern Farmhouse Look
If you think the “Farmhouse” look is a bit too rustic for you (think chippy paint, distressed woods, and animal prints), then you might like a more modern, streamlined look. Keep your furniture comfortable and casual but with straight elegant lines. Then layer on some more sophisticated prints and patterns like in this project, to keep your space from looking too rustic. Add in materials such as sisal, jute, and cotton keep your room casual but still sophisticated. And finally, you can’t go wrong with neutrals-black, white, tan, cream, or even pops of navy always create a classic look.
