The Complicated World of Tween Girl Bedroom Design
Are there few more creatures more complicated (yet beautiful) than a tween girl? I should know, I have one in my own home! My darling oldest girl turned 11 this year. Some days she wants to snuggle, play dolls, and watch Harry Potter movie marathons. Other days she doesn’t want to come out of the privacy of her bedroom and I can’t seem to NOT embarrass her. And I know things will only get more complicated as she gets older. So I just keep cherishing every hug and snuggle.
Tween Girl Decor Dilemma
And just in the very same way, decorating a bedroom for a tween girl can be as equally complicated. Part of them wants a sweet, little girl bedroom with all of their favorite stuffed animals. But the other part of them wants a “grown up” bedroom, free from anything that could even be considered babyish.
And to make it worse, us Moms tend to want to keep our tween girls in that little girl world full of sweetness. So how do you decorate a tween girl’s bedroom to fit all of her changing needs?
Version #1: Double Tween Girl Bedroom Makeover
So what is the only thing trickier than designing for a tween girl?
Decorating for TWO Twin Tween Girls!
Yup, my adorable clients were TWO tween girls. These sweeties share a room and were ready to take their bedroom from “little girl” to something more grown-up. Both Mom AND the girls could agree to this pink, gray, gold, and white bedroom design theme. The girls also mentioned they loved Unicorns and Dance, so they wanted those elements incorporated into the room as well.
For Version #1 we used this Pottery Barn Teen Bedroom (#1) as an inspiration for the room. We layered the girl’s beds with pink duvets (#7), a gray ruffled quilt (#8) and black and white dot bedding (#15), to create a sweet but sophisticated look for them. And to add some tween sparkle to the room, these “hello” pillows (#12) can be added to the bedding as well.
We didn’t have room for two side tables, and the girls needed as much storage as possible. So instead I chose this gray fabric dresser with nail head trim (#2) to work as a shared “nightstand” in between their two beds. There was room for two of these white & gold table lamps (#3) so each girl still got some control of their personal space.
Mom had also requested some sort of bench or window seat for a reading nook. I took a chance and found this pink velvet loveseat, whose petite size would fit into their shared bedroom, adding some sweet throw pillows (#4 and #14) finish off the look.
Including Existing Furniture Into a New Bedroom Design
One of the most expensive parts of a bedroom makeover is purchasing the bed and dresser. And in this case, we were doubling that cost with two kids. Luckily Mom was smart enough to have purchased these neutral white Pottery Barn Kid beds and dresser when the girls were little. When you are purchasing big furniture items for your kiddo, I would highly encourage you to go neutral and classic! And because they were well made pieces, they have stood the test of time.
I did give a tiny way to update the existing dressers from the wood knobs to a more teen-friendly glam gold knob (#13) for an inexpensive way to give their dresser a brand new look.
P.S. I let my 11 year old daughter look over this bedroom design before I sent it to my client and she approved!
Finish the Walls: Tween Girl Bedroom Artwork
One of the easiest ways to update any kid’s bedroom is with new wall decor. Mom and I worked together to find artwork that was a combo of sweet girl with a hint of teen girl vibe. We created a Wall Gallery (with a similar look to Item #22) with these items.
Another way to add a more grown-up look to their room was to convert their dresser to a “vanity table”.
Some day these sweet girls will be applying make-up and doing their hair in this bedroom, so I suggested hanging a pair of these gold mirrors (#31) over the dresser so it can double as a vanity table. And to set each mirror apart, they can add their monogram (#29) over each mirror.
Further gold accents like these removable gold dot decals (#21) and grown-up light fixture (#30) keep this bit of glam going throughout the room.
Version #2: Double Tween Girl Bedroom Design…Again
I sent Version #1 to my clients (Mom and daughters!) to see what they thought. Everyone dug the color scheme and the overall look of the bedroom design, but they wanted to see a few things differently in Version #2.
Sweet But Glam: Pink, Gray, Black & Gold
So in this bedroom design we kept the pale pink, white, and black bedding but with all new items. One swap out was doing a quilt or comforter this time around so we used this pink quilt (#7), black and white sheets (#10) and tassel blanket for the end of the bed (#4). A pop of bling comes with these gold lumbar pillows (#8).
To add some more glam to the room, this version shows this mirrored dresser with oodles of storage (#2) and these pink table lamps (#3).
To keep the room from feeling too grown-up, we kept the sweet unicorn theme with these unicorn dolls (#5) and gold statue (#9). This time the reading nook came in this soft gray velvet bench (#11) that also has hidden storage inside, topped with these sweet pink pillows (#12 and #13)
Choosing Art for a Tween Girl Bedroom
And a tween girl is going to want to put her personality all over her bedroom decor. And artwork is one of the best ways to do that.
In fact, if you are going to let a child have free range over choosing some items in their bedroom-I would let them choose the artwork.
I love digital downloads from Etsy. You can search a subject (in this case “unicorns”) and see if you can find something that child and Mom can agree on. And if anything, putting it in a cute frame will automatically add a finished looked (as opposed to the puppy posters I used to scotch tape onto my walls as a child).
And finally, we added some glam touches such as these mirrors (#24), light fixture (#25) and gold dot removable wallpaper (#20) for a grown-up touch to their bedroom decor.
More Girl Bedroom Designs
And since are are talking Tween Girls today, I’m going to share two more girly girl projects with you-one shows the “little girl” side and one shows the older “teen girl” side of any tween girl.
Little Girl Bedroom Makeover
The first brings out the “little girl” side of a Tween Girl, with this pink, gold, and white “Unicorn” themed bedroom makeover.
Fun Fact #1: It happens to my be my own 7 year daughter’s bedroom makeover

Teen Room Hang Out
And this makeover was for a trio of teens in California! Their house had a “bonus” room at the top of the stairs right outside the kid bedrooms so this space worked as a hang-out and TV watching area. You can grab some older girl glam ideas to incorporate into your tween daughter’s room. Just click on the image to see the makeover:

Postbox Designs KIDS: Online Interior Design For Kid Rooms
And if today’s girl bedroom makeover made you realize YOU have a Kid’s Room that needs some lovin’ (or nursery, Playroom, or Bonus Room), then you are going to love Postbox Designs KIDS! It is all of the custom design you know from Postbox Designs, but this brings in some extra fun for the kids. It gives you little ones a chance to give their feedback (with their own Questionnaire and space to draw their “dream room”), and includes some extra surprises just for them.
