Create Your Own “She-Shed”: A Craft Room & Sewing Room Makeover
The men have had their Man Caves for long enough don’t you think ladies? Which is why I always get a little extra excited when I get to share a Mom-centric space with you guys! If you are new around here, I’m Kristin, Mom to 3 kiddos, and full time Interior E-Designer here at Postbox Designs!
Actually I’m currently sitting poolside writing this post as my besties lay out around the pool at our annual Girl’s Reunion week here in Naples, FL. Just last night we were remembering the “good old days”. They were telling me how glad they were that I was major into scrapbooking in college because I’m the only one who has all of those photos from our early friendship days! So I could totally relate when this Michigan Mom reached out to me needing a space that was JUST FOR HER, and her crafting. She wanted a space where she could sew, craft, scrapbook, and it had to incorporate a Home Office for her as well.
So if you need a similar Craft Room/Sewing Room/Girl Boss Home Office too, you can get some ideas from her She Shed Makeover, read on!
Craft Room & Sewing Room Design Plan
The first step of ANY room design is nailing the layout. You need function and organization before you even START to think of making it look pretty!
Step #1 To Creating Your Own Craft Room or Sewing Room: Make Your List of Needs
You can scroll down to look at the Floor Plan below to see exactly how we laid out her Craft Room & Sewing Room design, but I started by breaking up all of her needs into different sections of the room. She filled out a Design Questionnaire as part of her Welcome Packet, so I knew she needed to have:
A Gift Wrapping Station with Wrapping Paper/Ribbon Storage (see Item#1)
Plenty of Storage for Craft Supplies, such a loose papers (see Items #2 & #4)
A place for her Cricut (see Item#3)
Craft Table with plenty of drawers and room to spread out (see Item #7)
A movable Sewing & Cutting Table (see Item #8)
A secondary work space (see Item #2)
Hanging Wall Space for easy access to crafting supplies (see Item #10 & 10A)
Home Office Area with desk, file storage, and printer storage (see Item #22)
Ironing Board (see Item #16)
Step #2 To Creating Your Own Craft Room or Sewing Room: Get Your Dimensions
My client handed me her list of Wants & Needs, and I set about looking for the perfect furniture to give her the space and organization she needed. As all of you crafters and sewers know, not all storage is alike. She needed some some very specific storage needs, such as a pegboard for hanging sewing supplies and room for her Cricut machine. So go ahead and measure how big your sewing machine is, or the size of scrapbook paper you use.
Having generalized storage = A Messy, Unorganized Space
But when you take the time up front to figure out exactly the specific type of storage you need, including sizes, then you can create a space that specifically works for you. You can also take an inventory of what you need space for. For example, do you need room for a dozen spools or ribbon or forty?
If you are going to build custom cabinets then you can literally design each door and drawer to work for your exact needs. In this Craft Room & Sewing Room Makeover, we were using pre-built furniture pieces, so I needed to find pieces that would work for all of her needs.
Nearly all of her white furniture you see in the Mood Boards came from Ballard Designs. They had a whole coordinating line of Office Furniture so we knew everything would match. Then we sprinkled in some other items like this movable sewing and cutting table (#8) from other sources-hers was found at Wayfair.
Step #3 To Creating Your Own Craft Room or Sewing Room: Go Vertical
You want to pack in as much storage and organization as possible when you are creating any type of Crafting Room. So don’t forget to go vertical! Adding in open shelves, wall cabinets, or any type of wall organization will not only pack in more storage, but usually creates pretty easy-to-access storage. For her Craft Room Makeover we used:
Open Shelves:
We used simple built-in Shelves (#2) over one of her work station. We made sure they were spaced apart to allow for specialized scrapbook paper storage (#4) and these teal bins (#6) to corral specific groups of items. One bin can be used for scrapbook accessories, another for books, etc.
Peg Board:
You can see an example so these on her Mood Board (#10 and #10A). She had an open wall area that was being wasted, so we used this extra large pegboard where she can keep out sewing supplies such as scissors, clippers, spools of thread, etc. It is right next to her sewing station, so it is in arm’s reach.
Vertical Mailboxes:
Vertical Mailboxes (#17) I love using these style mailboxes in a Home Office or family Command Center. Either each family member gets their own mailbox, or you can separate it by categories (bills, magazines, etc.)
Office Floating Shelves:
We also used a couple of pre-made white floating shelves (#22) over her desk area. This was the perfect area to add some cute accessories (small plants, framed prints) and keep office supplies at bay so she can keep her desk clear.
Craft Room & Sewing Room Floor Plan
With every Postbox, or Room-Inside-a-Box I always include a to-scale floor plan that shows how to lay out the entire room, including where to add every single item. You can see how we laid out her new room:

To also help my client know exactly how to lay out and re-create her new Craft Room & Sewing Room, I created this Elevation drawing for her, with notes to show how to lay out every detail:
Step #4 To Creating Your Own Craft Room or Sewing Room: NOW Make it Pretty
Once you have nailed the actual logistics, then you can start to layer in pretty items. My client said she loved teal and pops of gold. So we layered in those colors in pretty accessories (check out Mood Board page 2 above). And because my client purchased the Full Design Room Package, I included a 3D rendering of her room for her:
Create Your Own Craft Room or Sewing Room
Doesn’t this room just ooze organization? I’m such a Type A, so I love how she has a special spot for every single item she needs. You can use today’s post to help you create your very own Craft Room, Sewing Room, or She Shed space. Just remember the four steps of pulling it together, then start pulling it together.
Where You Can Find It All:
If you missed in from above, most of her white furniture pieces came from Ballard Designs. For a more budget friendly option, Martha Stewart has a pretty crafting line you can find at Home Depot. The rest of the accessory items came from places like Etsy (printed artwork), Wayfair (the sewing table on wheels, fold out iron board, and stool) , and Target (bins, plants, gold office organizers).
