Create a Gender Neutral Robot Nursery Theme
Hi Friends, Welcome to Postbox Designs! Over here all I do is Interior E-Design. Like you can shop your custom design in your PJs and order everything over a glass of wine. THAT kid of Interior E-Design! And over here I do “Real Design for Real Life”. If you are looking for a “look-but-don’t-touch” room, I’m probably not your gal. As a Mom of 3, and owner of a giant Labradoodle beast, I not only want my house to be beautiful, but most importantly: practical, usable, and kid/pet friendly. So I can’t help but put on my “Mom” hat when I design rooms for my clients all over the country. And today’s project is no different! This sweet Mom has three kids (including a new born), and I worked with her to finish off all of her kid’s bedrooms in their new home.
Usually I work in fixed price Room Packages, but I also do by-the-hour-work too. If you have a room that is “almost” done, or you have a lot of the main furniture, but just need help pulling it all together, then this is a great way to take your room from “ugh” to “ahh”. And that is exactly what we did with her three kid rooms.
Gender Neutral Nursery Design
Remember how I mentioned this Mom just moved into a new house AND had a newborn? That is one busy lady! So I was so glad when she reached out to me to help her finish off several rooms. She just wanted these rooms D-O-N-E, so she could actually enjoy them! For her new son she requested a Robot themed Nursery. Isn’t that the cutest? This was my first every Robot themed kid room, but I thought it was such a cute theme for a gender neutral nursery or kid room.
How to Create a Themed Nursery That Isn’t Too….Themey
Kids grow quickly. Duh, right? So when you are decorating your kid’s room, you want a room that is fun and even themed, without going over the top. Because what happens when they move onto the next interest? Or you want to refresh their room without totally re-doing it?
Go Neutral With your Nursery Furniture
So I always suggest starting with neutral big pieces of furniture. This gray rocker (#5), white Ikea dresser (#11), and simple white crib (#14) were items my client already owned. And she totally nailed it by going with classic, neutral pieces that will stand the test of time. What she needed help with was all of the little details to pull it all together.
Get the Right Layout, Then Fill It Inexpensively
The #1 way to add color, fun, and charm to any room (but especially a kid’s room or nursery) is the artwork.
But I want it to be easy, inexpensive, and easy to change out in the future.
Step 1: I suggest creating a type of “template” for your room. Purchase good quality frames and place them the way you want them. In this case we added a series of six frames over his crib, and several prints over his changing table.
Step 2: Fill these frames with fun, inexpensive prints from places like Etsy (which are where these prints are from). I love their digital downloads, because you can print the size you need. And you can get this semi-custom art for a fraction of the price.
Step 3: In the future, if you want a new theme, all you need to do is swap out the artwork. Leave the frames on the wall as is, and just change out what’s inside.
Don’t Overdo the Nursery Theme
We have tons of fun robot inspired wall prints (Items #1, #18, and #19), these fun plushes (#4 and #16). So you will definitely pick up on the theme when you walk into this nursery. However, I would restrain from buying EVERY SINGLE ITEM YOU CAN FIND with the theme for your new room! For example, we added in some fun touches that pulled in the same colors from our robot prints, that coordinated with our theme. Items like the changing pad covers (#7), bedskirt (#12), and striped curtains (#10) all pull in these bright colors, but will stand on their own.
Then we also layered in other fun, kid centric nursery artwork that coordinated with the theme, without introducing more robots. Wall decor like #9, #17, #21, and #22 keep the room fun and sweet, but have nothing to do with our theme.
There you go! This Mom had all of the main pieces of furniture for her nursery, but needed all of the little details picked out to create a finished, polished look. Just a few hours of us working together gave her the exact Master Plan she needed. She could just click and buy, and had her little guys’ nursery design DONE!
