Mid Century Modern Bedroom with a Global Twist
Hi Friend, I’m so glad you are here hanging out with me at Postbox Designs. If you are new around here, I’m Kristin! While I’ve been an Interior Designer for over 13 year, I have been doing exclusively Online Interior Design for over four years. Which is why I got the joy of working with this client in Washington state…while working from my home in Michigan a few thousand miles away. Isn’t technology great? And today I want to share her Mid Century Modern Bedroom Makeover.
But first…I helped this same client design her Living Room & Dining Room a few weeks earlier. If you missed it, you can check it out here:

With all of my Postbox Designs clients, I create a custom design, then send it over to them to get feedback and thoughts. I take all of their feedback and do a round of revisions to get them the space they love. Here is Version #1 of her Bedroom:
My client wanted a luxurious space full of modern elements…yet was still cozy and comfortable. My clients love a global look and especially love African and Chinese elements. So for their bedroom I started at The Citizenery for inspiration. These luxurious cotton sheets (#5) and fair trade hand made pillows (#3 and #4) set the scene for her bedroom makeover.
Mid Century Modern Nightstand Decor
On either side of her bed, I suggested these modern pendant lights from Shades of Light (#7) to hang over her nightstands. These hand woven wall baskets from West Elm (#8) can hang over her nightstand, and add a beautiful global element to the bedroom design.
I like to keep the tops of nightstands fairly clear so my clients have plenty of room for their every day objects. I suggested this Crate and Barrel frame (#28) on each nightstand and a modern alarm clock for one nightstand (#29). Finally these modern woven baskets (#9) clear clutter as my clients can store their books and magazines inside, and fit neatly inside each nightstand.
My clients had room for a seating area, so I started with this Mid Century Modern armchair and ottoman (#11) and this Citizenry ombre pillow (#12)
Mid Century Modern Bedroom Desk Area
Having a desk in your bedroom can be an amazing feature, and this one does double duty. One of my client’s requests was a vanity area (that can also double up as a desk area). I used this modern CB2 Parsons style desk (#16). Because my client already had an all wood bedroom set, I wanted to use another finish to help break up all of the wood tones. This global style ottoman (#17) can be stored neatly under the desk when not in use. A West Elm table lamp (#21) gives extra light and a stack of woven baskets (#22) can store items like makeup and jewelry but can be stashed away to keep the desk looking neat.
Mid Century Modern Dresser Styling
To finish off this bedroom design, I found some functional accessories for each dresser. My client already had existing dressers (#24) she wanted to incorporate into her new design. A pair of these Crate and Barrel table lamps (#19) give extra light to the space. This modern CB2 acrylic tray can corral her husband’s every day items (wallet, keys, glasses, phone, etc). Finally, an African juju hat (#20) hung over the dresser adds a soft global element to the space.
Mid Century Modern Bedroom Design Version #2
I sent my client Version #1 of her Bedroom to get her thoughts and feedback. We all agreed the design had the right vibe and feel, but there were a few swap outs my client wanted to see.
Her original lumbar pillow I found was on back order, so I found alternate global boho pillows from Anthropologie (#4). The other change on her bed was a different quilt at the end of the bed (#6).
A different, darker armchair (#11) and different artwork (#13) from Minted can go over my client’s dresser. My client was vacillating if she wanted an armchair in her bedroom, so I gave an alternative idea of a large faux plant (#2) in the corner instead.
In this second version I also wanted to show my client a desk chair (#17) instead of the ottoman shown in Version #1. Some more artwork was swapped out, like this abstract Minted print (#20). Otherwise, her new bedroom design stayed pretty much the same. And here is the 3D rendering of my client’s bedroom! As part of the “Full Design” Room Package a 3D renering was included, which allowed my client to see her whole room pulled together…before ordering a single item!
A big ole thanks to my client for allowing me to share her Bedroom design with you guys! I was thrilled to help with three different rooms in their beautiful Washington home.
