Adding the Finishes Touches to a Modern Boho Living Room Design
Hi friend, thanks for stopping by Postbox Designs, Interior E-Design. I’m Kristin, Mama to 3, yoga enthusiast (whose benefit is slightly offset by my mega sweet tooth), and an Interior Design who lives in Michigan. However, with the magic of Online Interior Design, I get the opportunity to help clients all over the country with their room designs!
So when my sweet client contacted me, she needed help with a couple of spaces. We started off with the first room you enter in her home: a Foyer/Living Room. Like many of my clients, she already had a few main pieces purchased for her room. She had her modern gray sofa and a console table (#9 below).
We decided to work together by-the-hour to add all of the finishes touches to her Living Room Makeover. Let me show you around!
P.S. If you don’t need a full room makeover and just need those “finishing touches”, send me an email at kristin@postboxdesigns.com and I can give you a quote for working together by-the-hour!
Modern Boho Living Room Version #1
My client wanted a modern-meets-boho-meets traditional space. AND she reported that the entire family loves being outdoors (especially the mountains and the beach), loves animals-especially horses, and wanted a cozy space.
I always start every project by sending my client a “Welcome Packet”, and as part of it, I ask my client to send a Pinterest board of images they love. So I started the design inspirational of her Living Room Makeover with one of her Pinterest images (#1).
She already owned the gray sofa, and I a set of warm, boho pillows (#10-12) to add some texture and pattern to her Living Room. I also found this warm, rust toned distressed rug (#2) from Rugs USA. I also found this Mid Century Modern coffee table from All Modern (#7). For a simple coffee table vignette, I found this Target woven basket (#6) and suggesting adding in these modern Project 62 vases (#4 and #5), also from Target.
Because this is a small space, there wasn’t room for extra chairs. Instead these leather poufs (#17) can provide extra seating, while taking up little floor space.
She also already owned this beautiful, rustic console table (#9). She even had some great accessories to put on it. I suggested using a combination of what she already owned (shown in the photo), along with the potted plants (#16 and #21). For wall decor, I’m suggesting this trio of outdoor prints (#13), blown up to a large 24″x36″ size.
Creating a Modern Boho Foyer Design
This is the room that you walk into from the front door. So while the above Mood Board showed all of the images for the Living Room area, we also needed to fill up the “Foyer” part of the room. This Ikea bench comes in a deep green and also gives great extra storage (#19). And these two boho pillows (#14 and #15), both from Target, keep piling on the texture and interest. The family specifically mentioned their love of horses, so this Etsy print (#20) is a fun focal point when you walk in. Because my client said she loved plants, this faux 5′ high cacti (#3) will fill up the area as well.
Modern Boho Living Room Version #2
No design is ever perfect the first time around. And I think it is a lot easier to give feedback when you have a specific design to look at. It can be difficult to explain your dream room…but when you see a space designed just for you-it is easy to get your wheels spinning. So I always include a round of revisions!
We kept the design very similar to Version #1 with a few swap outs. I had to laugh because the WHOLE FAMILY hated the cacti from Version #1, so I swapped it out with a live fiddle fig (#3). A new, but similar rug (#2) grounds the space, and I also gave a different coffee table (#1 from the below Mood Board).
Modern Boho Living Room Artwork
The biggest difference in the Living Room Design Version #2 is a whole different artwork idea. My client requested to see a Wall Gallery, full of nature inspired prints. All of the prints I found were digital downloads from Etsy. I love using these because my client can easily print them out to the size she needs, for just a few dollars each.
I used the outdoors prints (#13) along with Items #4-7.
Creating a Wall Gallery Template
But it is one thing to see a set of artwork together…but it is a whole new thing to know what size prints, what size frames, and how to pull the entire Wall Gallery together! So I created an Elevation drawing that shows the exact layout with each print. I also told my client the FRAME size and PRINT size for each item (the links and sizes were in her Shopping List, now shown).
A huge thank-you to my wonderful client for allowing me to share her project with you. If you have all of your main pieces of furniture, a design of budget friendly “finishing touches” makes all of the difference to bring the room to life! And if you are a Modern Boho gal yourself, I have even more projects to show you below:
