Two Neutral Living Room Design Options
My friends, here is the beauty of Online Interior Design-I get to work with the most amazing clients all of the country. Working from my home office (or sometimes the sofa!), I can custom design rooms, all done virtually, for people that I could never work with otherwise. And today is a great example. I designed two neutral Living Room designs-one in snowy Michigan, and the other in sunny Texas. Two awesome women-both busy Moms who wanted a Living Room that was beautiful, but also durable and practical for life with kids and pets. Yet with totally different lives, thousands of miles away. Neutral Living Room Design in Michigan
This Mama of three boys is building their brand new dream house and wanted a Living Room design before the house was done (smart, right?). We started with this Pottery Barn sofa (#2) upholstered in a Performance fabric that is stain and dirt resistant. Leather chairs (#4) are also a great durable option, and we paired it up wit this rustic coffee table (#3). It has hidden storage, fits the Modern Farmhouse look, and will hold up to three active boys!
Then we added in some fun with these neutral but fun patterned pillows (#13-17), all from Etsy. The whole room is full of shades of white, black, tan, brown, and blue-a classic color palette that works for any season.
And finally we added in some less expensive accessories so Mom won’t cry if an impromptu game of chase breaks out…#5,7,8, 11, and 12 are all Target finds!
And finally I found some items to fill up one of her blank walls. I’m suggesting this rustic wood bench (#19) and filled it up with these modern farmhouse pillows (#21 and #22) for extra seating, and a Wall Gallery of framed black and white family photos (#20).
Neutral Living Room Design in Texas
And now we move thousands of miles away, cross country to the Lone Star state! This Mom wanted a similar look of a neutral space…but wanted an elegant meets rustic look. They are remodeling their home, and wanted their furnishings to match their beautiful new spaces.
So in this neutral Living Room, I added in some more traditional elements, like this oil painting (#6), tufted ottoman (#2) and pharmacy style lamp (#7), and new-but-made-to-look-old elements like this brass ceiling fan (#16). We also kept very traditional with these throw pillows of velvet, stripes, and florals (#12-15) on her existing neutral sofas. (A question I get asked quite often: “Can you use my existing furniture into the new design?” And the answer: Of course!)
Neutral Dining Room Design
And adjacent to her Living Room space is her eat-in Dining Room space. So we kept with the modern farmhouse look (with a twist), keeping the neutral color palette. A rustic round table (#21) is paired up with these black x-back chairs (#19). Not only do these work with the style, but this distressed finish is going to be very durable, and these painted chairs will be easy to wipe down-a bonus with young kids. And a few elegant touches like this chandelier (#22) and oil painting from Ballard Designs (#23) keep things from getting too casual. And guess what the cow’s name is? Mango! Don’t you love it?
And my client asked for a door hardware recommendation, I love this bronze option (#18) and updated cabinet hardware for her built-ins (#5).
Which neutral look is your personal style? A little more modern, or a little more traditional? Either design has durability and cleanability factored into the design, so these families can comfortably enjoy their new spaces!
